2. Step 2 You can tap on any of the tasks such as Adjust media volume, Tell me about the weather, Tell me about my commute, Tell me about today’s calendar, Tell me today’s reminder and Take phone off silent.

3. Step 3 Once selected, you can change the order of the tasks that will be carried by Google Assistant.

4. Step 4 Then you can choose one of the tasks from the ‘And then play...’ This includes options like News, Podcasts, Audiobook and Nothing.

5. Step 5 It is even possible to choose news sources from where the Assistant will read your news. Same goes for Podcasts.

6. Step 6 Once done, tap on the ‘tick mark’ icon on top right corner. You will get a prompt saying that the assistant will give you information from the lock screen as well. Tap on ‘Allow’ to approve.

7. Step 7 That’s it. You will see a coloured ‘Google Assistant Routine’ icon just under the alarm. To remove it, tap on the ‘minus’ sign.

Now that Google Routines has started showing up in India inside the ‘Clock’ app, we expect it to have a deeper integration in other services as well.

Any quiz, poll or survey created inside Google Forms has no expiration date and it can collect unlimited number of responses until the form owner decides to manually close* the form.

For some Google Forms though, limits may be necessary.

If you are using Google Forms to accept entries for an online contest or a giveaway on your website, you may only want to accept the first ‘n’ entries strictly on a first-come first-served basis and close the form once that limit has reached.
If you are using Google Forms to collect sign-ups for an event, you may want specify a close date and automatically close the form once the event has ended.
If you are teacher who is using Google Forms for creating quiz assignments for the class, you may want to set time limits so that your form is open only on specific days during school hours and closed at all other times.

How to Set Limits in Google Forms

Google Forms offers no option to either specify response limits or any expiration criteria but we can easily incorporate this functionality into our forms with the help of Google Forms add-ons.

To get started, install the Email Google Forms add-on from the Google store. This add-on, as the name suggests, is meant for sending forms response in an email message but it can also help you schedule Google Forms and limit responses.

After the add-on is installed, go to your Google Form and click the add-ons menu (it looks like a puzzle icon). Choose Email Notifications > Limit Google Form Responses and you’ll see the configuration screen as shown above (video).

Open Google Form Automatically

If your form is currently closed and not accepting responses, you can specify an open date and your closed Google Form will automatically open on the scheduled date. This is useful for event registration forms where the registrations should be opened for public only on a specific date.

Close Google Form Automatically

Next, you can specify the criteria when your Google Form should be closed for new responses. You can either specify the exact date when the form should be automatically closed or you can set the maximum number of responses that your form should allow before closing itself.

This is perfect option if you are planning to use Google Forms for registrations forms, surveys, contests or any other event that has a limited capacity or is valid only until a specific date and time.

Set the Closed Form Message

With the Google Form limiter, you can also specify the custom message that will be displayed when someone accesses your closed form. This message has to be in plain text and you cannot use rich formatting or HTML tags. You can however include line breaks, hyperlinks (URLs) and email addresses.

Open and Close Google Form on a Recurring Schedule

You can even setup recurring open and close schedule with the limiter. For instance, you can specify schedule such that your form will open every Monday and Tuesday between 8 AM and 11 AM. The form will not accept responses outside the specified time window.

The recurring schedule option should be useful for educators who only wish to provide access to the form to student on specific days during specific hours.

The Form limiter is written in Google Apps Script. You can find the source code on Github should you wish to roll out own customised limiter.

Important Things to Know

If you’ve specified both Response Limits and a Closing Date, whichever comes first will close the Google Form.
The open and close date and time specified in the Google Form limiter are set as per the default timezone of your browser /computer.
The actual open and close time may sometimes vary ± 20 minutes from the specified time due to certain technical limitations of Google add-ons.
You can click the “Reset” button to completely remove the form schedule and closing limits.
If you would like to manually close your Google Form for new responses, open the Form, go to the Response tab and uncheck the “Accepting Responses” option. You can re-open the form anytime later by checking the “Not Accepting Responses” button.

It has a section called ‘Top Picks For You’, which is most probably AI-powered, and based on the users’ previous searches. Other sections which open by default are: Recently viewed, Popular on Google, Top Deals (under categories such as gadgets, healthcare, clothes, etc)

In the month of October, Google has launched this new Shopping Tab, in collaboration with Flipkart, Snapdeal and Paytm, which allowed users to directly pay via Google itself.

But now, a dedicated website has been launched, which makes their intentions more serious and focussed.

This week, Epic Games made the decision to pull all of its Infinity Blade games from Apple’s App Store. For fans of the franchise, it was a huge bummer. An even bigger bummer: if you had temporarily removed the app from your phone, now you can’t get it back from the App Store.

While on the surface it might look like all is lost, as long as you’ve downloaded an app before, you can download it again.

How to Download an App That's Been Removed From the App Store

The only way this one works is if you’ve downloaded an app in the past and you’re signed in under the same account you originally downloaded it under on the device. So, if you missed out on downloading something before it was pulled from the store, or you were using it on your friend’s phone, you’re out of luck.

To find your missing apps, go to the App Store and then select Updates followed by Purchased (on an iPad this is behind your profile icon at the top right).

You should see a list here of every app you’ve ever purchased using that user ID. You can tap “Not on this iPad” or “Not on this iPhone” to see everything you’ve ever downloaded that’s not currently on your device. Or you can use the search button to just jump straight to what you’re looking for.

When you find the app you want. Tap the cloud icon beside the app to download it.

My own quick perusal on my App Store account found what appears to be the first app I ever downloaded: AIM on July 11, 2008.

Keep in mind that if an app has been removed from the store, like my precious AIM, then it’s likely no longer being supported by the developer as well. That means your user experience might not be what it once was, or very pleasant at all.

Google is incorporating its Smart Reply feature into Hangouts Chat, giving users up to three reply options that they can quickly select, edit and send. The company said the feature is backed by machine learning similar to what's behind Gmail's Smart Reply, adding that the move is part of its larger effort to bring these sorts of tools to all of G Suite. Google announced earlier this year that it planned to bring the feature to more chat apps.

Walmart buys Art.com to take on Amazon in home decor

Walmart announced that it is planning to acquire Art.com, a major online retailer of art and wall decor. The art seller will continue to operate as a standalone online storefront, but some of the platform's more than two million products will be available through Walmart.com, Jet and Hayneedle. Walmart hasn't said if it will carry Art.com products in its physical stores.

The purchase is expected to be completed in early 2019, though no price was given. In addition to the company's products, Walmart is also getting its hands on Art.com's ArtView platform that allows shoppers to see what a product will look like in their home. The technology may be used so shoppers can preview other Walmart products as well. Walmart currently offers virtual looks at curated apartments, while retailers like Target and Ikea have full augmented reality offerings.

The purchase of Art.com marks a continuation of Walmart's online retailer spending spree. Since spending $3 billion to acquire Jet.com in 2016, Walmart has scooped up a number of smaller e-commerce companies including women's clothing shop ModCloth, men's clothing outlet Bonobos, outdoor gear seller Moosejaw, footwear retailer ShoeBuy and home furnishing company Hayneedle.

Airport shopping is mostly about perfumes, booze and overpriced electronics, but that could soon change. Amazon has reportedly inquired about installing its cashierless Go stores at several US airports, according to Reuters. Emails from a public records request revealed that Amazon asked for meetings with managers at San Jose and Los Angeles international airports and received a positive response. "I am looking forward to moving forward with the Amazon Go technology at the airport," wrote one airport IT manager.

An unnamed source said that Amazon was trying to figure out how to get into airports and assigned a business development employee to the task. Officials said that Amazon would have to go through the same competitive bid process as any company to become a concessionaire, however.

It's not clear how profitable Amazon Go could be at airports. Employees would need security clearances, and retail space tends to be at a premium. What's more, airports are often publicly run, so all of the terms and conditions would be publicly available -- something that Amazon may not be crazy about.

Even if Go stores ran at a loss, however, it could be well worth it for Amazon. "It would gain an opportunity to expose Go to travelers that might otherwise never experience it," one anonymous individual told Reuters. "You'll be able to build broad awareness just being in a dozen of the best airports."

It could also be a boon for travelers: No matter how you might feel about Jeff Bezos' company, it does tend to have a broader selection and better prices than most stores. You'd probably be looking at food and electronics rather than Hermes cologne or Crozes Hermitage wine, however.

A Brief History

It was 2005 when Google started the messaging app Google Chat or Google Talk which was soon followed by Google+ messenger. Google chat platform was one of the first widely appreciated instant messaging apps and it helped put away the troubles of SMSing. Soon enough, other prominent apps like Facebook and Whatsapp gained more popularity, and Google chat platforms took a backseat. Hangouts, a mobile app similar to the aforementioned apps, was introduced in 2013 replacing all the other chat platforms.

Hangouts Classic to shut down in 2020?

According to a report published by 9to5Google, the Hangouts app, which was already losing popularity, will shut down sometime in 2020. Signs that the journey of Hangouts has come to an end showed when Google stopped updating the app from about a year ago.

The article quotes, ‘According to a source familiar with the product’s internal roadmap, Google Hangouts for consumers will be shutting down sometime in 2020. That’s not surprising at all since Google essentially ceased development on the app more than a year ago.’

On the other hand, Scott Johnson, Director of Product Management at Google, slammed the news saying that the faithful fans of Hangouts will be upgraded to Hangouts Chat (team communication app) and Hangouts meet (video meetings platform). He further went on to explain in his tweet that Hangouts Classic, that is the current Hangouts app, is being shut down but users will be ‘migrated’ to Chat and Meet.

Future of Hangouts

Does this mean Hangouts will not be available for us to use after 2020? Absolutely not. Although Google has stopped updating the app, Hangouts users will soon be able to access their favorite app as it will be integrated into Hangouts Chat and Hangouts Meet. As of now, these two apps are being used exclusively by G Suite Customers, but Google intends to shut down Hangouts classic only after the successful migration of customers to Hangouts Chat and Meet.

How will we be affected?

Hangouts is truly a great app for people without cell phones and sim cards. But presently, there is hardly anyone without cell phones and sim cards, therefore, making the app quite unnecessary. Also, the loyal users of Hangouts will still be able to use the app, but the transition date is not yet confirmed.
