2. Xiaomi Mi 9 SE may soon be launching globally

The Mi 9 SE that was announced last month is currently available only in China. But that may change soon as the smartphone has been listed on Xiaomi Global's compliance page which hints at the company planning to expand its availability.

However, don't get your hopes high just yet as there are some other smartphones listed on this compliance page that never made it outside of China. But in the case of the Mi 9 SE, we have seen earlier evidence leading us to believe this one will.

There's no word from Xiaomi regarding the global availability of Mi 9 SE, so we will have to wait until more information comes in.

The Mi 9 SE is a toned down version of the Mi 9 and is the first smartphone to come with a Snapdragon 712 SoC. It has 6GB RAM and up to 128GB of storage in tow. Other specifications include a 5.97-inch Full-HD+ display, triple rear camera (48MP + 13MP + 8MP), and a 20MP front camera.

The Mi 9 SE features an in-display fingerprint scanner and packs a 3,070 mAh battery with 18W fast charging support.

3. Akshay's 'Kesari' creates new box office records on first day

This Holi, the box office turned Kesari, courtesy Akshay Kumar's recent release.

Based on the Battle of Saragarhi, Kesari is one of the most talked about movies of the year.

Given the palpable excitement for Akshay's war drama, the movie set the box office on fire.

Helmed by Anurag Singh, Kesari created new records at the box office on the first day itself.

. Surprising all, 'Kesari' emerges as highest opener of 2019

After the intriguing trailer left the audience mesmerized, it was expected that Kesari would open to a decent collection.

But much to everyone's surprise, the war drama went on to emerge as the highest opener of the year.

Bollywood trade analyst Taran Adarsh took to Twitter to declare, "Kesari roar. Emerges the biggest opener of 2019 [so far]. Thu Rs. 21.50 cr. India biz".

.'Kesari' replaces '2.0' to emerge as Akshay's second highest opener

Furthermore, Kesari went on to become Akshay's second highest opener ever.

The first place is taken by Akshay's 2018 release Gold, which opened to an impressive collection of Rs. 25.25 cr.

While Gold was followed by Akshay-Rajinikanth's 2.0, with the first day collection of Rs. 20.25 crore, it has now been replaced by Kesari.

We wonder how many records Kesari will shatter.

. 'Kesari' is the story of 21 brave heart Sikh soldiers

For the uninitiated, Kesari narrated the story of the Battle of Saragarhi, which is said to be one of "the bravest battles ever fought" in the history of the world.

This battle was fought between 21 soldiers of the British Indian Army's Sikh Regiment and 10,000 Afghan tribesmen in September 1897.

The regiment, which was led by Havildar Ishar Singh, fought till their death.

. 'Kesari' leaked online by TamilRockers, just a day after release

Meanwhile, Kesari became the recent target of piracy giant TamilRockers and was leaked online just a day after its theatrical release. According to media reports, the movie was available for free download in HD quality. Would this affect the movie's collections? Only time will tell.

4. Motorola One Vision image leaks revealing punch-hole display and 48MP rear camera

We heard quite a lot about the Motorola One Vision in the past couple of days. The smartphone paid a visit to Geekbench and later its detailed specs leaked online. It also popped up on Wi-Fi Alliance's website bearing model number XT1970-1 and running Android Pie. Now today, we are treated to an official-looking press render of the One Vision, which shows its design.

This image comes to us courtesy of Tiger Mobiles. It reveals the phone has a punch-hole display with the selfie camera located in the left corner. The display has small bezels on its left, right, and top, with the chin being comparatively larger.

Moving on to the back, we have a dual camera setup placed vertically in the left with a dual-LED flash down below. The cameras also have text to their right which confirms one of them will be a 48MP unit.

The back of the smartphone, which seems to have a glossy finish, is also home to a fingerprint scanner with Motorola's signature bat-wing logo atop, and further down below, we have the Android One branding.

Other things we can ascertain from this image is that the One Vision will come with a USB-C port placed at the bottom which will be flanked by a speaker and a microphone. We don't see the headphone jack which means it's either placed at the top, or Motorola decided to ditch it.

The One Vision has the SIM card slot located on the left, with the volume rocker and power button sitting on the right. The lockscreen of the phone has the date of April 3 which is when it may go official. You can also see the pill-shaped button at the bottom which indicates the phone will run Android Pie out-of-the-box.

The Motorola One Vision looks the same as the P40 that leaked last December. Well, that's because these are likely the same phone which will be launched under different names in different markets. The One Vision is reported to launch in Latin America, India, and Brazil, with the P40 being China-exclusive.

You can head over here to check out the detailed specs of the One Vision. The P40 will likely have the same hardware, but there could be some differences between the two in terms of RAM and onboard storage.

5. Next-gen iPhone to come with Wireless PowerShare capability

The iPhone 11, or whatever name Apple manages to come up with for this year's release, will reportedly come with Wireless PowerShare support, supply chain sources reveal. Introduced by IDT in 2015, the Qi-based standard for reverse wireless charging (as in, charging other devices off of your smartphone) is supported on the Galaxy S10 series, but the feature was previously available on the Huawei Mate 20 Pro.

In the Apple realm, having Wireless PowerShare will mean, for example, being able to charge your Apple Watch without carrying its own charger around. Additionally, the second edition AirPods, announced this week, are available with a case that can be charged wirelessly - just how convenient it would be if you can do so from your iPhone 11.

The one issue is that present iPhones don't charge all that fast themselves - at least not with the bundled ancient 5V/1A adapter. The company does make an 18W PowerDelivery adapter that it sells separately, for which you need an extra USB-C to Lightning cable, the two costing a total of around $50. Well, word on the street is, that combo will come bundled with the next-gen iPhone, which will retain the Lightning port. It's not as great as having a USB-C port on the phone in the first place, but baby steps is better than no steps at all.

6. Honor 8X global variant receiving Android Pie-based EMUI 9 update

Earlier this month, Honor released an Android Pie-based EMUI 9 update for the 8X in China. Now the company has begun rolling out this update for the phone's global variant.

This Android Pie-based EMUI 9.0.1 update weighs a whopping 3.14GB in size and brings along improved sound recorder, faster app launch times, simplified UI, and Huawei Share 3.0 to the 8X. It is currently rolling out in Macedonia, but we expect a wider rollout soon.

Last week Honor confirmed it would release Android Pie for the 8X in India starting on March 18, but we haven't heard anything on that later. The company has said that it plans to release the update in batches this month so we expect the Indian units to get an update notification anytime now.

7. vivo V15 and V15 Pro availability expands to the Philippines

Chinese phone maker vivo unveiled the V15 Pro last month and made the V15 official earlier this month. Both these smartphones are already available in a couple of markets, and the latest country they have made their debut in is the Philippines.

The V15 is priced at PHP17,999 ($342) and the Pro variant is priced at PHP23,999 ($456). You can pre-order the V15 until March 29 and the V15 Pro until April 11 with sales starting after those dates.

The V15 is powered by the Helio P70 SoC which is coupled with 6GB RAM. It's built around a 6.53-inch notchless display and has 128GB of storage onboard. The smartphone features a 32MP pop-up selfie camera and boasts a triple camera setup at the back consisting of 12MP, 8MP, and 5MP modules. It comes with a rear-mounted fingerprint scanner and packs a 4,000 mAh battery under the hood.

The V15 Pro is powered by the Snapdragon 675 SoC and has 8GB RAM. It's equipped with a slightly smaller screen (6.39-inch) and battery (3,700 mAh) but rocks a 48MP primary camera at the back instead of the 12MP one on the V15. It also comes with a fingerprint scanner embedded under the display, with the selfie camera and storage remaining the same as V15.

You can head over here for a detailed specs comparison of this V15 duo, and here for our detailed written review of the V15 Pro.

8. Beats will launch true wireless earbuds in April

CNET learned from a reliable source that Apple-owned Beats plans to release a new totally wireless update to the PowerBeats sport headphones. Apple’s AIrPods are quickly becoming the most popular pair of Bluetooth earbuds and a new Beats alternative could reportedly launch in April.

Apple recently announced updated AirPods with improved battery life, hands-free “Hey, Siri”, and an updated H1 wireless chip. It is believed that Beats’ new earphones will have the same Hey Siri feature, the updated H1 chip, and perhaps better battery life than the AirPods.

There’s no firm information about how much these Beats earphones would cost, but given the AirPods $160 (or $200 for wireless charging) price tag, they shouldn’t cost too much more. CNET speculates Beats could launch with a $250 price tag but suggests they should be $200 or below. The current PowerBeats 3 Wireless retail for $199 and Apple is Apple so… $250 it is.

The new PowerBeats would be a great alternative to those who don’t like the design of the AirPods or would rather use something sleeker. There are other truly-wireless earbuds out on the market now like the $130 Samsung Galaxy Buds or some of the Chinese alternatives from both Huawei and Xiaomi but for iOS users’ sake, any earphones with the H1 chip will work infinitely better for those on the iOS and/or MacOS ecosystems.

9. Huawei P30 and P30 Pro will shoot dual camera video, company confirms

Huawei might as well just call the P30 phones “announced” and get it over with. The latest leak comes from its Singaporean site and does a good job of succinctly listing the best features of the Huawei P30 and P30 Pro as well as detailing the launch promos.

Buying a P30 or P30 Pro on launch day – April 6 – from the VivoCity mall will net you a free Huawei Watch GT and JBL Clip 2 speaker. These freebies are worth a total of SGD 467 ($345/€305). Europe will be getting the watch too (but perhaps not the speaker).

As for the specs (as if we haven’t seen them leaked a thousand times by now), the phones will offer attractive gradient-colored exterior, high-end cameras with great low-light capability and an interesting Dual-View feature.

Dual-View Video will be enabled after launch with an OTA update. It creates split-screen video with two of the rear cameras, showing a wide and a zoomed-in view of the scene.

Other specs include a 40MP “SuperSpectrum Sensor”, capable of shooting at “super high ISO” and low-light video recording. The Huawei P30 Pro will also feature a periscope camera (10x hybrid zoom) with OIS and a ToF sensor.

In Singapore, the new P30 phones will be available through M1, Singtel, StarHub and Lazada.

10. Samsung Galaxy Fold appears on Geekbench, doesn’t impress with scores

Geekbench got an interesting visitor - the Samsung Galaxy Fold. The foldable smartphone didn't score quite as high as its Snapdragon 855 and 12GB RAM suggested.

What that suggests is that the software on the unit that ran the benchmark is far from finalized and Samsung still has plenty of work to do before the April 26 launch.

Another interesting bit is the SM-900F naming, which is the international variant of the phone. If that one is using the Qualcomm chip it's a clear confirmation that we are not getting an Exynos version of the Fold.

Recently, the Fold appeared in a leaked video where we got a glimpse of it in both its tablet and phone glory. Not much could be said in terms of its performance though as the video only lasted several seconds and the device was never confirmed to be a retail version.

11. Scammers caught playing hidden video ads and draining smartphone batteries

Have you ever wondered why your phone has a drained battery in the middle of the day? It might have something to do with a faulty application, running scam ads unbeknownst to you. According to fraud detection firm Protected Media, Ad Stacking was spotted in codes, provided by an ad technology company Aniview. Ad Stacking is essentially showing you one ad, but in the background it is playing multiple videos at the same time, destroying your battery life.

This type of fraud hurts not only you, your device and data cap, but also companies who pay for impressions and views, as well as applications and platforms who are buying and selling advertisement real estate for smartphones. Advertisers are told people are watching their clips but there isn’t enough response, so they have to pay even more.

Craig Silverman, a reporter at BuzzFeed News, contacted Israeli company Aniview which runs a video ad technology platform. Alon Carmel, company CEO, denied any involvement and said the code was created by third-party subsidiaries and exploited by another party. In the video above you can see that a pretty much regular banned about McDonald's or Michael Kors actually has multiple videos hidden behind it.

The reporter declined to name the application or its owner, mostly because they were most likely out of the scheme and were just carrier rocket of the scam. If you have issues with battery draining from any of your apps, consider uninstalling it and letting developers know before more people and their smartphones fall victims of such frauds.

Apple has been resisting for a long time now. Earlier, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India had requested Apple to include the Trai DND – Do Not Disturb app in App store. But unlike Google, Apple rejected the request. Apple said that they would not include the DND app by Trai into the App store, the reason being some privacy concerns. This means iPad and iPhone users in India will now be able to user Trai’s Do Not Disturb app on their respective devices. The iPhone and iPad users will be able to download and install the TRAI-DND app in their devices for free from the iOS App Store. It is important to note that to download the application, the iPhone and the iPad users will need to upgrade their device to iOS 12.1 or later software version.

Apple Includes Trai’s DND App in App Store

The TRAI DND app is already available on Google Play store. And now, the app is available for iPhone and iPad users as well. To recollect, both Apple and Trai faced numerous struggles to come to a mutual agreement for the inclusion of the TRAI DND app in the App store. But Apple has finally approved to include the app in the App store after the Indian Government threatened to ban iPhone in the country for not having the app onboard. In July this year, Trai issued a directive to the Indian telecom companies stating that all phones that did not support TRAI-DND app will be barred from the telecom networks in India.

In the directive, Trai had mentioned, “Every Access Provider shall ensure, within six months’ time, that all smartphone devices registered on its network support the permissions required for the functioning of such Apps as prescribed in the regulations 6(2)(e) and regulations 23(2)(d),” Trai noted. “Provided that where such devices do not permit functioning of such Apps as prescribed in regulations 6(2)(e) and regulations 23(2)(d), Access Providers shall, on the order or direction of the Authority, derecognise such devices from their telecom networks.”

Why Didn’t Apple Include the App So Long?

The TRAI DND app basically helps users report unwanted calls and messages which have increased in India by a massive number in the last one year. On an average, according to some reports, Indians receive up to ten unwanted calls or messages in a day. Apple took some time to include the app in the App store because of some privacy concerns. According to some sources within Apple, the TRAI DND app deemed a privacy risk. As of now, it is not clear if Trai has modified the DND app for meeting the privacy requirements from Apple or if Apple has just approved after the company was threatened of banning iPhone in the country.

I share my bedroom with at least one person, sometimes two or three depending on whether any children migrate during the night. So I feel like I have a superpower when I wake up and silence my alarm five minutes before it actually goes off. I’m not super, of course: it’s just a silent alarm on my Apple Watch.

The silent alarm helps me get up for my early morning workouts, and the fact that it can track my sleep means I can keep tabs on whether I’m getting to bed early enough each night. You don’t need to track sleep each night, but a tracker like the Watch or a Fitbit can help you tell, automatically, whether or not you’re consistently getting enough.

There’s another small advantage to sleeping with a tracker that can measure heart rate: you get a true resting heart rate. Your heart rate is lowest when you are truly resting: not sitting up, not walking around, not finishing a workout, but when you’ve been lying in bed without moving for a few minutes. (It’s also tricky to measure it first thing in the morning if the first thing that happens is that an alarm rings, scaring the bejeebers out of you.)

Track Your Sleep With the Apple Watch

Knowing your resting heart rate is, again, not necessary but a nice-to-have: as you exercise and get fitter, your resting heart rate will decrease. If you’re stressed by a medical condition or by too much hard exercise, your resting heart rate may tick back up.

To get the benefits of sleep tracking and silent alarms, you’ll have to set up a few things first.

Charge Your Watch While You Shower

Finding time to charge the Apple Watch is your first issue to sort out. Unlike Fitbit models that can run for seven days on a charge, Apple figures the Watch’s battery will last 18 hours if you check the time 90 times, get 90 notifications (this is too many), and work out for an hour with music playing through the watch. It takes two hours to fully charge the battery, but you get the first 80 percent of the charge in 90 minutes.

The best time to charge the battery is twice a day, morning and evening. I keep my charger in the bathroom and set my watch to charge while I take a shower, right after my morning workout. I leave it there while I get dressed, pack my kids’ lunches, and do all my other puttering-around morning things. I put it on when I leave the house. Then I do another charging session in the evening. Forty to 60 minutes twice a day, and you’re covered.

Put Your Watch in Theater Mode While You Sleep

The Apple Watch thinks it’s so smart. It turns on when you look at your wrist, which is handy sometimes but lights up the room if you’re anything but still when it’s dark. Fortunately, there’s a quick setting to stop this.

Swipe up from the bottom of the watch, and one of the control center buttons has little happy and sad mask faces. This turns on Theater Mode. In Theater Mode, the screen will stay dark unless you tap on the face or push one of the buttons. Notifications are also silenced, but alarms will still buzz you on schedule.

Turn off Cover to Mute

There’s one more pitfall. The handy “Cover to Mute” feature allows you to silence notifications by putting your hand over the watch face. When your watch vibrates to wake you up, it can be silenced this way, too. So you can turn off your alarm without realizing it.

There’s no handy control center button for this. Go into the Apple Watch app, and find Cover to Mute under the Sounds & Haptics settings menu.

Choose a Good Sleep App

I like Sleep Watch, which tracks your sleep automatically and gives you some handy stats each morning. When you look at your stats, it asks you how rested you felt when you woke up, which is honestly a better measure of sleep quality than any of the data points it can track electronically.

For an alarm, I just use the Watch’s built-in alarm feature.

Sleep++ and Pillow keep simpler stats, meaning your eyes are just on your sleep time (good) and your “sleep quality,” which is unreliable in any app. Pillow also has a “Smart Wake Up” alarm, which aims to find your lightest sleep within 30 minutes (or your choice of 15 to 60 minutes) before your alarm time. Other alarms will not go off while Pillow is tracking your sleep, so choose well.

Apple has finally pushed out iOS 12.1 update to enable dual-SIM functionality on the iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max and iPhone XR. Unlike Android smartphones where you get two physical SIM card slots, Apple’s dual-SIM feature works differently across the world, except China.

The latest Apple iPhone users have an option of one physical SIM and one eSIM as part of dual-SIM functionality, although as of now only Reliance Jio and Airtel are offering the eSIM option. Apple did mention Vodafone during the iPhone launch presentation, but unfortunately, the company is yet to provide eSIM services in India.

Needless to say that physical Nano-SIM card option works the same way as any other phone, but eSIM option is usually enabled from operator’s side. Here’s how you can enable dual-SIM on your iPhone XS, XS Max and iPhone XR if you are on Airtel (first reported by FoneArena).

Send an SMS to 121 – Type “eSIM” <space> “registered email id” (in case you don’t have registered email, then get in touch with customer care to register it first).

Step Three

After the SMS, you’ll receive an email from Airtel that will have a QR code.

Step Four

Scan this QR code using your iPhone by going to Settings > Cellular > Add Cellular Plan. (Alternatively, you can also manually install these values.)

After this, iPhone users will receive a confirmation SMS from Airtel and they will be required to reply with the consent for activating eSIM.

To note, all three Apple iPhones – iPhone XS, XS Max and iPhone XR – take physical Nano-SIM as primary by default and eSIM as secondary. But if you like to change the order of these SIM cards, then it can be configured from the Settings menu.

Apple not just revamped the Mac and iPad hardware line up at its ‘Special’ event on October 30 in Brooklyn, New York, but also gave an official introduction to iOS 12.1. The rollout of the new OS version was announced by Apple CEO Tim Cook at the end of the event. This comes to all the eligible iPhone and iPad devices that are running on iOS 12 or iOS 12.0.1. Here’s everything new that is coming to your iPhones and iPads. Group FaceTime: Chat with up to 32 people at the same time This is one of the most highlighted features of iOS 12.1. Group FaceTime, which was showcased at WWDC 2018 conference earlier this year, will make it possible to perform a FaceTime call with a total of 32 users. It automatically detects who is speaking and makes the user’s display icon more prominent on the screen. The feature is also integrated in the Messages app making it easier to start a FaceTime call directly from the group chat. 70-plus new emojis Apple iOS 12 also brings new emoji characters onboard for iPhone and iPad users. The update includes 70 new emojis featuring characters with red hair, grey hair, curly hair and bald head. There are different emojis for animals, sports and food as well.

Dual-SIM support

Another key feature rolled out via iOS 12.1 update is the support for dual-eSIM cards. This is, however, limited to iPhone XS, iPhone XR and iPhone XS Max only. This means users can now switch between two telecom carriers using just one SIM card.

Depth control in camera

The iOS 12.1 update also brings Depth control feature to the iPhone cameras. This essentially improves the Portrait shot with ‘professional-level bokeh’ look. Users can also adjust the depth of field in real time before they press the shutter button. It is also available for TrueDepth front-facing cameras.

How to download iOS 12.1

You can check for the iOS 12.1 update on your iPhone and iPad devices by navigating through Settings > General > Software update. It is worth adding that the device would require over 50% battery charge and Wi-Fi connectivity.

Well, Apple fans, the bittersweet day you’ve been waiting for has finally arrived. Why is it bittersweet? It’s never a bad day when Apple unveils a bunch of new devices, of course. But the company’s October event means that Apple won’t make any major announcements again until next spring when it shows off iOS 13 and a new version of macOS for the first time. And as for exciting new hardware releases, nothing really big is likely to happen after this event until next September when Apple launches the iPhone 11. Hey, if nothing else that gives you plenty of time to save your money — the iPhone XS Max already goes up to nearly $1,500, so who knows how much next year’s new iPhones will cost.

In the meantime, Apple on Tuesday unveiled a whole slew of new products. We all knew that redesigned iPad Pro models were coming, and they definitely lived up to the hype. In fact, the new models Apple announced this morning probably represent the biggest redesign the iPad line has ever seen. Of course there was plenty more Apple showed off on stage during Tuesday’s press conference in Brooklyn, and in this post you’ll find all of the biggest announcements from the show.

MacBook Air

The first announcement Apple made on Tuesday is one that fans were very excited about — a brand new MacBook Air.

Apple’s next-generation MacBook Air has a new Retina Display that packs 4 million pixels into a screen with much narrower bezels. The bezels are also black now instead of silver, which makes for a much better viewing experience.

The new MacBook Air also includes a Touch ID fingerprint scanner right in the keyboard, and it’s of course protected by sapphire crystal. A dedicated T2 chip powers Touch ID, and the new MacBook Air thankfully gets the backlit third-generation keyboard from the MacBook Pro. The new Force Touch trackpad from the MacBook Pro can be found on the new Air as well, and new louder speakers are built in too.

An 8th-generation dual-core Intel CPU powers the 2018 MacBook Air, and the maximum RAM has been doubled to 16GB. It also ships with up to 1.5TB of internal storage, and it features battery life of up to 13 hours of video playback. Amazingly, the new model is 17% smaller than the previous MacBook Air despite all that new tech, and it weighs just 2.75 pounds.

The new MacBook Air starts at $1,199 and is available for order starting today ahead of shipments that begin next week. Learn more about Apple’s new 2018 MacBook Air right here.

Mac mini

After all these years, Apple is finally updating the Mac mini. FIIIIIIIINALLY!

The new Mac mini has an all new design that’s more in line with the rest of Apple’s Mac lineup, and it’s far more powerful than the previous-generation model. The base Mac mini has an 8th-gen Intel quad-core processor, and an upgraded six-core processor is available as well. The new model is five times more powerful than the previous Mac mini, according to Apple

The new Mac mini supports up to 64GB of RAM, up from just 16GB in the previous-generation model. It also supports up to 2TB SSD drives and has the secure Apple T2 chip. It has 4 Thunderbolt 3/USB-C ports, an HDMI port, and up to a 10GB Ethernet port.

The new Mac mini starts at $799 with a Core i3 processor, 16GB of RAM, and a 128GB SSD. Orders open today and it starts shipping next week. Find out more in our earlier post.

Today at Apple

Apple announced 60 new sessions that will be held at its retail stores around the world to help educate customers about all the different new features in Apple’s products. As always, these sessions are all free. You can learn more on Apple’s website.

iPad Pro

2018 brings what is by far the biggest iPad redesign Apple has ever released.

The new display on the 2018 iPad Pro is called a Liquid Retina display, just like the screen on the iPhone XR. It has narrower bezels with rounded corners, and as expected the home button has been removed from the face of the iPad. Apple’s new iPad Pro comes with either an 11-inch screen in the same footprint as the old 10.5-inch iPad, or with a 12.9-inch display that’s much smaller and thinner than the previous-generation model. Apple’s new 12.9-inch iPad Pro is actually 29% smaller than its predecessor.

Both new iPad Pro models get Face ID to replace Touch ID that used to be in the home button, which means if of course includes the TrueDepth camera system. Don’t worry though — there’s no notch since the iPad Pro’s bezels are wide enough for the components in the TrueDepth camera. Apple’s 2018 iPad Pro models also support gesture navigation like the iPhone X, iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, and iPhone XR.

An updated A12X Bionic chipset powers the iPad Pro models Apple announced on Tuesday. It’s a 7nm chip that has more than 10 billion transistors, and it has an 8-core CPU that includes four performance cores and four high-efficiency cores. It also delivers twice the graphics performance as the previous-gen models. Apple says the new iPad Pro is faster than 92% of all laptops sold in the past year.

As the rumors suggested, the new iPad Pro models ditch the proprietary Lightning port in favor of a USB-C port. We can only hope that this is a foreshadowing of things to come with Apple’s iPhone lineup. Apart from all the other benefits USB-C affords, the USB-C port on the iPad Pro provides power and can actually charge accessories. As for battery life, the new models still offer up to 10 hours of usage per charge.

The 11-inch iPad Pro starts at $799 with 64GB of storage and there are four different size options up to 1TB. The 12.9-inch model starts at $999. Orders open today and the iPad Pro will be available in stores on November 7th. The current 10.5-inch iPad Pro will remain available for purchase.

Second-Gen Apple Pencil

The new Apple Pencil attaches magnetically to the new iPad Pro. What’s more, it pairs automatically and charges wirelessly anytime it’s attached to an iPad Pro! It has a completely different octagonal design and a bunch of nifty new features. For example, a double-tap on the new Pencil lets you change modes, like from writing to erasing.

Smart Keyboard Folio

Apple also announced a new keyboard accessory that attaches to the 2018 iPad Pro models. The new Smart Keyboard Folio includes a full size keyboard as well as a kickstand on the back that props the iPad up like a laptop screen.

iOS 12.1

Last but certainly not least, Apple’s iOS 12.1 update will be released later today. It includes some huge updates including Group FaceTime as well as eSIM support for dual-SIM capabilities iPhone XS and iPhone XR. Oh, and there are also 70 new emojis!

Apple’s iPhone XR has been available online and in stores since this past Friday, and it already seems like it’s going to be a huge seller for Apple. There weren’t really any long lines to be found at Apple stores over the weekend, but the world’s top Apple insider reported that pre-order demand was very strong. Some plugged-in Wall Street analysts thing the iPhone XR might even end up being Apple’s best-selling iPhone during this product cycle, which sort of makes sense. The iPhone XR isn’t “cheap” by any stretch of the imagination, but it starts at $749 while the least expensive iPhone XS will cost you $1,000. Most impressive, perhaps, is the fact that the iPhone XR delivers the same kind of power and speed as the more expensive iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max. It’s powered by the same A12 Bionic chipset and has mostly the same specs, and that’s also why it’s a massive threat to all the Android flagship phones out there right now — it’s much more powerful, much faster, and even less expensive.

If you’re one of the many people who already got your hands on a new iPhone XR, you’re undoubtedly enjoying it right now. You also probably took your time to pick out the perfect color since there are so many options. Well, we have some good news for you this morning: The “notch wallpaper” made specially for iPhones has finally been updated and is now available for the iPhone XR.

Remember when the iPhone X was first announced last year and everyone started freaking out about how much they hated it? Heck, even we hated the look of it when we first saw it. Then when you get the new iPhone in your hands, you realize two things. First, the notch actually looks pretty cool and it’s very nice to have the screen extend all the way to the top corners of the phone. And second, you don’t even notice the notch anymore after using the phone for a little while.

The notch design is still a central part of Apple’s iPhone designs this year, and some people like to show it off. In fact, a whole lot of people like to show it off! Graphic designer Hideaki Nakatani, who goes by @heyeased on Twitter, is known most commonly for the crazy iPhone glitch wallpapers he used to make back in 2016. The most popular one was definitely the crazy black wallpaper that caused the iPhone’s dock and folder backgrounds to disappear. It looked amazing on the Jet Black iPhone 7 and the matte black model, but then Apple fixed the little bugs in iOS that made those wallpapers possible. Luckily, Nakatani decided to turn his attention elsewhere and make other kinds of wallpapers for iPhones.

His most popular wallpaper right now by a wide margin is a special series of wallpapers that were made for the iPhone X last year and then updated last month for the iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max. These awesome wallpapers are mostly black so they show off the deep blacks that OLED panels are loved for, while also saving precious battery life in the process because black doesn’t cause pixels to light up on OLED screens. Second, they really show off the notch perfectly because they have a thin border that wraps around the edges of the screen. Here’s what it looks like on the iPhone XR:

But wait, Nakatani’s notch wallpaper isn’t available for the iPhone XR, you say. Good news: it is now! The graphic designer emailed us to share the news that he now has a collection of notch wallpapers in all different colors that are custom-made to fit the iPhone XR’s display. What’s more, they come in the exact colors Apple offers on the iPhone XR so that you can match it perfectly.

As always, this new collection is completely free and available to download from Nakatani’s website. Just make sure that when you apply them you choose “Still” and not “Perspective,” and also don’t resize it at all. You can also find versions for the iPhone X, iPhone XS, and iPhone XS Max right here.

Today’s Apple event in New York City has produced a number of great announcements but the real star of the show is of course the all-new iPad Pro. Tim Cook took the stage to brag at length about iPad being not only the most popular tablet but also the most popular computer on the planet. He used that to make the case for an all-new iPad, and boy is it neat.

The most obvious change to the iPad Pro this time around is the absence of the home button. That’s something that leaks had hinted at heavily prior to the official announcement, and it’s panned out just as everyone expected. The new edge-to-edge display carries Apple’s “Liquid Retina” branding.

The new iPad Pro has an 11-inch display, but it sits within the same footprint as the existing iPad Pro. There’s also a 12.9-inch version which has the same screen size as the previous 12.9, but the device itself is much smaller due to the shrunken bezels. It’s 25% smaller overall.

As expected, the new iPad Pro comes with Face ID, and it works essentially the same as it does on the iPhone. The new tablet has Apple’s TrueDepth camera built in, facilitating all the neat features that iPhone users have been enjoying for just over a year now. With the absence of the home button, gesture controls work just as they do on the iPhone. Swiping down from the edges of the screen reveals various menu controls, which iPhone users will be familiar with.

Buried inside is Apple’s A12X Bionic chip. An 8-core CPU and 7-core GPU team up for overall faster performance than any iPad before, with up to 90% speed increases depending on the task. Graphics performance is doubled. Apple compared the tablet’s graphics performance to that of the Xbox One X, which is pretty crazy.

Another big change that was rumored ahead of the event was the change from Apple’s Lightning connector to USB-C. Apple made good on those leaks, announcing that it would be adopting the standard port for the new tablets and also enabling charging-out, which allows you to use your iPad Pro like a backup battery to charge your phone.

There’s also a new Apple Pencil on offer. The new Pencil charges wirelessly, which is obviously a whole lot more convenient than sticking it into the tablet’s charging port, and it clips magnetically to the side of the tablet. The Pencil has new touch controls that let you switch rapidly between tasks on the tablet, which should be welcome news for anyone who spends a lot of time doing art.

Apple took a moment to showcase some of the app upgrades that will be possible with the new iPad Pro. Architecture and engineering apps will now be able to provide desktop-level performance for users, Apple says. Apple even took a quick dig at game consoles by noting that the new Assassin’s Creed mobile game runs at 120 frames-per-second, which “isn’t possible on any game console.”

Greg Thomas of 2K Games also took the stage to show off a new version of NBA 2K running on the iPad Pro. The game looks a lot like the modern console versions of the game, but the fact that the game is running on a tablet at a steady 60 frames-per-second is admittedly pretty neat.

Adobe also made an appearance at the event, showing off “the real Photoshop” running on iPad Pro. Photoshop has been available for iPad and iPad Pro for quite a while already, and it gets better every year with new features being adopted and included in the mobile version, and the same would seem to be true this year as well.

On the pricing front, the new iPad Pro 11-inch model will start at $799 with 64GB, while the 12.5-inch model starts at $999 for the same 64GB of storage space. Ordering starts today and they’ll be available on November 7th.

Cupertino-based smartphone giant Apple is reportedly rolling out an update to its latest operating system -- iOS 12 -- on October 30. The same day as Apple is holding an event in New York where it is expected going to launch new MacBook and iPad. As per media reports, the new update -- iOS 12.1 -- will be rolled out a couple of hours after the event.

Among other features, the iOS 12.1 update is also going to enable the eSIM support in apple's latest iPhones -- iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max and iPhone XR. According to a report by 9to5Mac, quoting various telecom carriers have stated that they "are readying for an iOS 12.1 launch on October 30, coinciding with the rollout of eSIM support for iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, and iPhone XR."

9to5Mac also reportedly spotted Bharti Airtel India's Tweet where the telco responded to a user's tweet asking about the availability of the e-SIM support in the 2018 iPhones. "Hey Nilesh! Please be informed that Esim functionality for iPhone XS Max will be available effective 30-Oct when Apple releases iOS 12.1 Thank you, Anmol P," reads the tweet. The tweet, however, has now been deleted.
Readers must note that the iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max and iPhone XR did not come with eSIM support which the company said will be rolled out later with OS update.

As per iPhone User Guide for iOS 12.1, new features include dual-SIM support via e-SIM and Group FaceTime. The Group FaceTime will allow iPhone and iPad users to video chat with up to 32 people simultanelously. The feature is not available in all regions and in some older devices. Apple iPhone 5s, iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus will support only Group FaceTime audio-calls and not video calls. Another update will be adjustment of depth when clicking a picture in potrait mode. Apple Music too will get a new layout.

iPhones and eSIM: Here's what you must know

In India, both Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel are Apple's official eSIM partners for the latest iPhones. The country's largest telecom operator, Vodafone-Idea is still not supporting the eSIM feature in the country.

While Reliance Jio is offering eSIM support for both prepaid and postpaid users, Airtel is offering the eSIM facility only to its postpaid subscribers.
As of now, there are the only 10 countries worldwide where e-SIMs work -- Austria, Canada, Croatia, Czech Republic, Germany, Hungary, Spain, United Kingdom, United States and India.
China is the only market where Apple will launch a different version of the new iPhones with two physical nano SIM card slots. These models with two physical nano-SIM card slots will be exclusive to mainland China, Macau and Hong Kong.

30 difficult questions Apple asks in interviews
Working at Apple is incredibly fast-paced and challenging, and if you happen to be an engineer or designer at Apple, this dynamic is undoubtedly amplified. With Apple continuously serving up products meant to be used by hundreds of millions of consumers across the globe, the pressure to deliver hardware and software that “just works” – in a compressed time-frame, no less – is immense. Not surprisingly, landing a job at Apple is no small feat, and the company’s interview process ensures that only the best and brightest are able to walk through the doors at 1 Infinite Loop. While many of the questions Apple asks prospective employees naturally center on standard engineering, math, physics, and Computer Science concepts — data structures, algorithms, materials, sorting etc. — Apple, much like Microsoft, also asks questions that aim to gauge an interviewee’s creativity, communication skills, and problem solving ability. It’s worth noting that Microsoft was the first major tech corporation to start implementing outside the box questions during interviews, an approach that was eventually copied by many other tech companies.
As a quick illustration, two interview questions Microsoft has been known to ask include: How would you design an ATM for children? and I am your grandmother. Describe what MATLAB is to me. Apple iOS 12: Likely features, enhancements and more
Apple is all set to unveil the latest version of iOS -- the operating system that powers its iPhone and iPads. The new version of iOS arrives at Apple's annual developer's conference WWDC in June every year. This year the company is expected to launch iOS 12. The new OS will bring several new features to Apple iPhones and iPads. This year the company is said to be focussing on overall performance than on adding new features. Here's all that rumours suggest about the upcoming Apple iOS 12.
1. ‘Slide to unlock’ may make a comeback : Apple removed the popular ‘Slide to Unlock’ feature from iPhones in iOS 10 (that launched in 2016), pushing more users towards using the TouchID-based home button to unlock the device. But it looks like the feature may make a comeback in iOS 12. Some users have reportedly even filed a petition asking Apple to bring back the feature.
2. Shazam song recognition app may get integrated into iPhones, iPads : Music discovery may see some improvements in iOS 12. That’s because of Apple’s acquisition of Shazam, one of the widely-used music discovery app. The service may be integrated into Siri.
3. Apple Airplay 2 may finally arrive : You may have heard of Apple Airplay 2. The feature was introduced last year at WWDC 2017 conference but is still to be rolled out. It showed up in the initial beta version of iOS 11.3 but was later removed, hinting that a full-fledged version may arrive in iOS 12. The feature lets users enable multi-room audio service.
4. Major enhancements in Parental Controls : Apple investors are said to be pressurising the company to improve parental controls. This may mean password lock for each app to prevent kids from misusing them.
5. FaceTime may get the group-calling ability like Skype : FaceTime is expected to finally get group video calling feature with iOS 12. This feature has been a long-pending demand of users, as services such as Skype, Facebook Messenger and others already have it.
6. Android-like multiple-user account support : In Apple iOS 12, the company may also add support for multiple-user accounts. Although this may not be there for iPhones, it surely can be one of the features for iPad users.
7. New emojis may be coming : New emojis are also likely to arrive with iOS 12. Last month, Emojipedia announced 150 new emoji characters. However, it is up to Apple how many out of these 150 characters in includes in iOS 12.
8. Some iOS apps may come to macOS as well : Apple uniformity can be one of the features of iOS 12. According to a Bloomberg report, the company is likely to bring Apple Home app to macOS as well. For now, Apple allows developers to bring iOS apps to watchOS and tvOS.
9. Status to show contacts that are available to take calls : According to a patent filed by Apple, there could be a feature in the making that will allow users to know the location of other users using the location services of his/her iPhone (subject to he/she sharing it). It may also tell if the iPhone is in airplane mode or available to take calls. All this is said to show up in contacts.
