The new rollout by the telecom regulatory authority of India concerning the DTH industry has caused the subscribers to rethink their choice of the DTH operators and many are migrating to new service providers

The new tariff regime introduced by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) has brought a lot of changes in the DTH and broadcasting industry. Owing to this new regulatory framework, pricing wasn’t the only thing that changed, but instead, things also changed on the business side as the viewership, service norms and quality norms were also transformed. This proved to be a test for the DTH providers as now these operators had to adhere to these strict norms and they were in direct scrutiny of the regulator. However, this has helped us in identifying the operators which are providing the best services and proving to be the top choice of the subscribers. So in case you are thinking of switching your DTH service provider, you must go through the below-given options.

Which DTH Operator is the Top Choice of Subscribers After New Trai Tariff Regime?

Which DTH Operator is the Top Choice of Subscribers After New Trai Tariff Regime?
Which DTH Operator is the Top Choice of Subscribers After New Trai Tariff Regime?

Tata Sky

Tata Sky is easily one of the biggest DTH service provider in the country. After the Trai mandate though, the operator was slow to list the new channel packs and pricing. However, it is safe to say that Tata Sky has done a commendable job of introducing a smooth migration process for the subscribers. After the mandate, Tata Sky has launched tons of HD and SD packs for the subscribers in regional languages as well. There are also Mini-packs in the portfolio and combined with the straightforward app and website based migration process Tata Sky has managed to stay on top of the preference list of a lot of subscribers. The operator also remains ahead of other operators by boasting as many as 65 exclusive channels. Furthermore, the DTH operator has recently removed lock-in period on paid channels which is another good news for the subscribers.

D2h

Notably, D2h was the first operator to respond after the Trai mandate came out back in October. The operator was also quick to start the migration process ahead of others and hoped for subscriber addition to its existing base in the interim. Later the operator introduced many combo plans and topped them up with add-on packs in SD and HD and many packs in regional languages as well. Recently, D2h has also put out information about additional connections as well, noting that subscribers can avail them by only paying Rs 50 as flat NCF.

However, D2h subscribers have faced and are still facing a lot of issues related to various channels. In fact, most of the consumers are still not able to reach the company’s toll-free number for clarifying their doubts.

Dish TV is also offering similar combo packs to the consumers since it’s the one who operates D2h. Recently, Trai has issued a notice to Dish TV and D2h for not following the guidelines implemented by the regulator.

Airtel Digital TV

Bharti Airtel’s DTH wing also boasts of an impressive subscriber base of more than 15 million in the country. The operator, after the Trai mandate, introduced many channel packs for its subscribers. To ease up the process in a better way, Airtel Digital TV also made it possible for the subscribers to select their new channels via the Set-Top Box only. The operator also launched lots of regional channel packs, but as of late Trai has put Airtel Digital TV in crosshair after some subscribers of Airtel Digital lodged their grievance about missing channels and black screens although the problem was quickly resolved soon after. While Airtel Digital TV subscribers has the freedom to choose a lot of channel packs, they are often facing issues related to billing and some are even terming Airtel Digital TV’s billing system is completely broken.

Sun Direct

Sun Direct is a prominent DTH provider in the south, and it is safe to say that although the provider does not boast of a widespread network in the North, it has established a solid stronghold in South India. Further, the move of completely doing away with additional slab NCF charges made Sun Direct an attractive choice for a lot of subscribers. Following in the lines of other DTH providers, Sun Direct has launched new channel packs, regional channel and add-on packs in HD, SD. Also, it’s possibly the only operator to offer a wide-range of channel packs for longer durations. For example, Sun Direct has nearly three DPO packs in every language and it’s offering them for a period of up to 12 months.

Verdict

After weeks of noticing the happenings in the DTH industry, we have noted that in terms of the number of channels and number of channel packs, ease of migration and customer service Tata Sky is the DTH provider which has managed to satisfy the subscribers to a large extent. The provider had also launched a similar offer as Sun Direct and Dish TV by doing away with NCF on select channels. The tariff migration is almost completed, but there are still some subscribers who’re facing issues in terms of billing, channel packs and much more.

DoT Controller Communications Ashish Joshi said in a tweet, “We will take it up with the telecom operators and police heads for necessary action.”

As per reports, the DoT said in an order that license conditions bar carriage of objectionable, obscene or unauthorized content in any form on the network. This order was released on February 19, 2019.

According to the report, this feature will be available in future for all iOS beta users who joined the TestFlight beta program in the next iOS updates. msnTarGet.com

New WhatsApp tool: Group Invitation feature to kill this annoying problem
WhatsApp offered a public beta program for Android and Windows Phone last year. After launching the latest beta version for Windows, WhatsApp is in a move to develop new features for all beta users.

Group Invitation feature is currently not available. However, the chatting app is said to be working to add this new feature and may add new improvements in the next updates, reports Wabetainfo. The Group Invitation feature is not available for development reasons as it needs more improvements before getting enabled for everyone. Fun2Ind.com

In May last year, Wabetainfo had hinted that WhatsApp may be developing a new feature. It had then said that it was not possible to add Enterprise users in groups anymore because of a new privacy feature against spam.

It had said that a " Server-side protection" was apparently preventing some enterprises from being added in groups unless they were using group invite link. "This is very interesting, because maybe it opens doors to a new privacy feature that might be natively available in the app," Wabetainfo.com had observed then.

At present, you can manage the Group Invitation feature in WhatsApp Settings > Account > Privacy > Groups option

By selecting this option, the user will get three options - Everyone, My contact and Nobody. When the admin is not able to add the user to the group, they will receive a request to join, using an invitation system. A user will receive a message depending upon the selection of privacy setting. MobAsk.com

Everyone: If the user selects everyone option then they can be always added in groups. No invites will be received.

My Contacts: If the user has selected this option then they will be always added in groups from their contact numbers. They will get an invite to join a group from people not in his contacts list. soas.in

Nobody: If the user selected this option then they cannot be directly added in groups, in any situation. They will receive a request every time someone wants to add him to a group.

The new feature is available under WhatsApp Settings > Account > Privacy > Groups.
New reports suggest that WhatsApp is working on a group feature that will let users have control over who can add them to a new group. Currently, anyone and everyone can add you to a random WhatsApp group without your permission. The Group Invitation feature will be available for everyone in future for any iOS beta user that joined the TestFlight beta program in the next iOS update. msnTarGet.com

The new feature is available under WhatsApp Settings > Account > Privacy > Groups. A user will have the option of limiting their privacy settings for Group invitation to three options: Everyone, My Contacts and Nobody. Users can select ‘Everyone’ if they wish to be added to groups by just anyone on WhatsApp. Similarly ‘My Contacts’ will allow only the user’s contacts to add them to groups. If a user chooses ‘Nobody’ then a request will be sent by the admin to join the WhatsApp group. This request has an expiry time of 72 hours. Fun2Ind.com

WhatsApp is working on a new feature that will make it much easier for the users to control if they want to be added to a group. The feature is more like an invitation control mechanism that will let users decide who can add them to a WhatsApp group. The feature is currently under closed beta testing phase on iPhone, as part of the Test Flight program, and will soon be expanded to more users with the next beta update for WhatsApp on iPhone. msnTarGet.com

1. The feature is currently under testing on WhatsApp for iPhone
2. It will soon be expanded to the app's Android version too
3. The revamped WhatsApp settings layout is now widely available

The WhatsApp group invitation feature is limited to the app's iPhone version as of now and was spotted by WABetaInfo. The feature will soon hit the app's Android version as well. However, the group invitation control functionality is currently in an inactive state because it is reportedly still under the early stages of development. As for the feature itself, it will be located in the “Privacy” section, which can be accessed by following this path on WhatsApp's iPhone client: Settings > Account > Privacy > Groups. Fun2Ind.com

The Groups option allows users to choose between three variables and will come into play when a WhatsApp group admin wants to add them to a group. The first option –“Everyone” – will let anyone add the user to a group, without the need for an invite. The second option – “My Contacts” – will only allow an admin, who is in the users' contact list, to add the user to his/ her group. Others will have to send the user an invitation, which the user can then choose to accept or decline. soas.in

Lastly, the “Nobody” option will block everyone from adding users to a WhatsApp group. Enabling this option means all admins have to send a group invitation in order to add users to a WhatsApp group. However, the users will have to take action regarding a group invite within 72 hours of receiving before it expires. Once the invite expires, the users can only join a group when the admin sends them another invitation. However, the users will be able to join a WhatsApp group via a group link invite irrespective of their group invitation settings. mobask.com

Instant messaging platform WhatsApp is testing a new feature that users who hate being added to random WhatsApp Groups.

Spotted by WABetaInfo, the website that keeps track of the upcoming WhatsApp features, said that the messaging app is adding new improvements to its Groups feature and may roll them soon on both iOS and Android operating systems.

As per the screenshots shared by WABetaInfo, the feature will come in the Settings menu of the app. Under this head to Account > Privacy> Groups. msnTarGet.com

Once there, users will find 'who can add me to groups' with three options -- Everyone, My Contacts and Nobody -- similar to what you see in Last Seen, Profile Photo, About and Status. Fun2Ind.com

If you have selected 'My contacts' then you will get a request when someone tries to add you to a Group. Same will be the case if you choose ‘Nobody’ as option. These invitations expire after 72 hours. However, if you have selected 'My contacts' and the person who is trying to add you is there in your phonebook, then you will be added directly -- same as now -- without any request. soas.in

As per the report, once you get an invite, a new chat will be created with two options -- Accept and Decline. However, there is no screenshot to show that. Interestingly, you will get only one 72-hour valid invite at a time as the report says, "you won’t be able to receive two invitations from the same group at the same time." There will reportedly be a Group link -- that will be created once the group is made -- which can be used to join a group irrespective of the privacy option selected by the user. MobAsk.com

Upcoming and Newly Introduced WhatsApp Features Detailed

We’re just one month into 2019 and WhatsApp has already rolled out a plethora of features to enhance the user experience. Just a couple of weeks ago, WhatsApp for iOS has received the authentication feature which allows users to secure WhatsApp with Touch ID. At the moment, WhatsApp rolled out the authentication feature to iOS users only, but it could be added to the Android version as well very soon. Popular WhatsApp blog WABetaInfo already noted that WhatsApp is working on adding authentication feature to its Android app which will allow users to secure the app using a fingerprint. Right now, Android users are relying on third-party locking services to secure the instant messaging app, but very soon, WhatsApp will add an in-built one which will make it easier for the users. MobAsk.com

In other news, WhatsApp is also said to be working on integrating the stickers from third-party apps to the keyboard. This will enable WhatsApp users to send stickers from standard Keyboard apps. This feature will likely be rolled out to Android users in the coming weeks. Besides these features, the Facebook-owned company is also said to be working on a lot of new features including Share in Chat, 3D Touch support for Statutes in iOS among others. soas.in

Recently, WhatsApp also stated that it’s removing more than two million spam accounts every month and that’s a huge number. Also, WhatsApp is facing various challenges with the new social media regulations implemented by the Indian government and it’s hinting towards an exit from its biggest market.

To enable the said feature, users must make sure that they have the latest version of the messaging service. Users could check the same by tapping on “settings” and going to "help" option. A screen can be seen below with the version listed on the top - make sure that you have version 2.19.20.

Users could check the same by tapping on “settings” and going to “help” option. A screen can be seen below with the version listed on the top – make sure that you have version 2.19.20.

However, it must be noted that the additional security feature for Android devices is under development and should be rolled out soon. So far, WhatsApp has only allowed this security feature on Apple devices. Fun2Ind.com

In case, you don’t have the desired version, go to the iOS App Store and update. You will be able to see the version number below “What’s New” in the App store.

After you have the latest version of Whatsapp, open the app and go to settings. Tap on the “account” menu option, then go to “privacy” on the new menu. soas.in

Apple users must note that the type of iPhone will determine how users unlock their WhatsApp with iPhone X, XS, XS Max and XR showing “Face ID” while phones with fingerprint scanner showing “Touch ID”.

The desired setting can be found in “screen lock”. Users must note that it is by default toggled off, so it has to be switched on.

As soon as you are done with it, a new set of options. Users can either have WhatsApp lock as soon as they open a different app, or they may choose different times. Be sure that you choose wisely as selecting “immediately” might become tedious as users will have to unlock WhatsApp every time they open a new app. Picking the longer duration will let you have some more time before you have to authenticate the app again. mobAsk.com

This additional authentication is especially useful for people who are allowing other people use their device but do not wish anyone seeing their messages.

With the authentication feature switched on, users can enable other people to access their phone without them reading the WhatsApp messages on the phone.

Bharti Airtel and Vodafone have been trying to stay in the competition since the introduction of Reliance Jio in the Indian telecommunication sector and while cellular data costs and tariffs have been brought down to dirt cheap prices in India, the prepaid recharge segment has seen the rise of combo packs which offer cellular data, unlimited calling, SMS benefits and more in just one prepaid mobile recharge plan. msnTarGet.com

However, the rising number of options being made available has also instigated a confusion among users as to what prepaid mobile recharge plans are the best for them from Airtel, Reliance Jio and Vodafone. Nothing is private in the day of the Internet – and that goes for your personal, even deleted WhatsApp messages as well.

Currently, the app allows users to delete specific messages sent either to a group or an individual in the “Delete for everyone” option, replacing the message with a “This message was deleted” in the chat. However, there are a few caveats even with this tool. For starters, both you and the recipient must be using the latest version of WhatsApp. Even then, recipients may see your message before it’s deleted or if the deletion was not successful – and that’s only if you delete it within an hour after sending. msnTarGet.com

Deleted WhatsApp Messages Can Be Restored - Here’s How
Here’s the catch: Deleted messages are actually stored on your phone and can be recovered using the app’s recovery feature. While chat histories aren’t stored on WhatsApp’s servers, the platform says messages are backed up and stored in a variety of places that aren’t protected by WhatsApp's end-to-end encryption. Fun2Ind.com

For iPhone users, chat histories are stored in the iCloud via an automatic backup option or can be done so manually at any time by going to WhatsApp > Settings> Chats > Chat Backup > Back Up Now. Recovering your chat history from iCloud is even easier. After verifying that a backup exists, simply delete and reinstall WhatsApp from the App store, verify your phone number, and follow the on-screen prompts to restore your chat history. Perhaps more unnerving, the app has an option for you to email yourself a copy of the entire chat history. soas.in

Android users are able to backup chats and media to Google Drive, making it even easier to transfer any data stored to a new device – and it doesn’t even count towards Google Drive's storage quota. Similarly, information can be automatically or manually backed up by opening the app and hitting Menu > Settings > Chats > Chat Backup and tapping Back up to Google Drive and selecting a frequency other than Never. Restoring from Google Drive is just as easy. Again, just uninstall and reinstall WhatsApp, verify your phone number, and hit Restore. mobask.com

Just a few days ago, Facebook announced plans to merge WhatsApp, Messenger, and Instagram. Founder Mark Zuckerberg said the three apps will remain standalone and separate but that users will be able to message each other between the three apps without having to switch platforms, requiring every communication to be encrypted from end-to-end. Currently, WhatsApp is the only app of the three that has this as a default option.

Facebook is planning to merge its three messaging services—WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, and Instagram’s private messages—into a single messaging platform.

This back-end merger makes sense on paper and breaks down communication walls between the various Facebook-owned apps. Whatever the final product looks like, it will reportedly be end-to-end encrypted, and each of the apps will remain a separate service with its own icon in your phone’s app library. But the plan is to have all three messaging services using the same internal, cross-platform chat service. msnTarGet.com

That said, even with the promises of encryption and cross-platform support, WhatsApp had some serious privacy concerns in the past, and Facebook doesn’t exactly have a clean rap sheet when it comes to user privacy and data. SoAs.in

As a result, some users may not be happy about this messaging merger. (And some of us just don’t want to be tied to the ecosystems of big companies like Facebook.) So let’s look at alternatives to WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger that will let you make a clean escape from Facebook’s upcoming chat platform altogether. MobAsk.com

Signal

Signal is a frequently recommended messaging app thanks to its high level of privacy, user security, and transparency. Signal supports text and group messages; media messages for pictures, audio, video, and documents; and even voice/video calls between users. An Android version can also work as an SMS app, replacing the stock Android or Samsung message apps. Fun2Ind.com

Signal has been endorsed by people like Edward Snowden and numerous other privacy/data security advocates (which are prominently featured on the app’s home page). All communication in the Signal app is end-to-end encrypted, and you can set up timers for messages to be auto-deleted. The dev team has also been working to reduce the amount of required sender information necessary for message delivery. If you’re interested, you can check out Signal’s entire encryption protocols here. Fun2Ind.com

Signal can be downloaded for iOS, Android, Windows, macOS, and Debian-Linux distros.

Viber

Viber’s chat features include group chat, instant voice/video messaging, and thousands of gifs and animated stickers. You can even install chat extensions to share YouTube videos, Spotify tracks, location info, and more. Viber also supports audio and video calls. (While calls made between Viber users are free, you can make paid international calls to any landline or mobile number using the Viber Out service.)

All messages on Viber are end-to-end encrypted and can be timed to self-delete. Viber also includes a Trusted Contacts feature that helps you verify the identity of the other chat participant by swapping secret keys. The app will update you if your contact changes their account details in the future.

Viber will display your availability, much like Facebook messenger does, but you can disable this if you ever need to hide your status. You can also disable read receipts, hide conversations, and lock messages with a PIN code. Fun2Ind.com

Viber is available on Android and iOS, which can be synced to your Windows or Mac desktop.

Telegram Messenger

Like many of the other apps listed here, Telegram provides end-to-end encryption for all communication and auto-deletion settings. It lets users send text and media messages, and supports group messages that can include up to a whopping 200,000 people in one chat thread.

Telegram’s cloud-based chat runs on globally-distributed servers, which Telegram claims can deliver messages faster than any other messaging app available. This also means you can sync messages across all your devices, and you get unlimited storage for your shared media. If you’re a developer, the Telegram API is entirely open-source and free to use. Telegram is available for Android, iOS, Windows Phone, Windows desktop, Linux (both 32 and 64-bit), macOS, and also offers a native web version of the app.

GroupMe

The Best WhatsApp Alternatives

As the name implies, GroupMe is a group messaging service that provides cross-platform chat. It’s owned by Skype (which is owned by Microsoft), so it’s not open-source like the other services on this list. It’s also subject to the same data-collection practices as all Microsoft products, and it doesn’t feature encryption—nor many of the security features of the other apps we’ve included. However, what sets GroupMe apart is its focus on group chat, as well as a few other fun features. msnTarGet.com

GroupMe allows users to share videos, images, and documents, which can be viewed via a “gallery” mode that shows all the media shared within a group’s history. You can even send direct messages to specific users within a group. GroupMe also supports location sharing, as well as secondary features such as “liking” messages and custom app-based emoji sets. SoAs.in

There are Android, iOS, and Windows GroupMe apps, and a web-based chat client. However, there is also an SMS-based version of GroupMe that you can use without needing an app—or even a smartphone. Users text specific commands to the GroupMe phone number to create and carry on group chats. This text-based system even allows you to manage your group and change chat settings. It’s a handy feature, but keep in mind that this functionality is only available to those in the US.

Facebook is currently working on integrating its three chat services - Messenger, WhatsApp, and Instagram. They won't merge, continuing to function as standalone apps, but their owner wants their users to be able to message each other across platforms.

In order for this to work a huge amount of reconfiguration needs to be done by "thousands of Facebook employees", according to a report from The New York Times today. They will need to change how the apps function at their most basic levels. msnTarGet.com

Facebook Inc chief executive officer Mark Zuckerberg is planning to unify the underlying messaging infrastructure of its WhatsApp, Instagram and Facebook Messenger services and incorporate end-to-end encryption to these apps, the New York Times reported on Friday.

The three services will, however, continue as stand alone apps, the report said, citing four people involved in the effort. mobask.com

Mark Zuckerberg's goal is for all three apps to incorporate end-to-end encryption once the integration is complete in late 2019 or early 2020. Currently WhatsApp has end-to-end encryption on by default for all conversations, while in Messenger you can opt into end-to-end encrypted chats. Fun2Ind.com

In a statement, Facebook says it wants to "build the best messaging experiences we can; and people want messaging to be fast, simple, reliable and private". The company is "working on making more of our messaging products end-to-end encrypted and considering ways to make it easier to reach friends and family across networks. As you would expect, there is a lot of discussion and debate as we begin the long process of figuring out all the details of how this will work".

After the changes, a Facebook user, for instance, will be able send an encrypted message to someone who has only a WhatsApp account, according to the report. msnTarGet.com
