Google on Tuesday announced eSIM wireless service on its Pixel 3 smartphone with Reliance Jio and Airtel telecom carriers in India. Google was the first smartphone vendor to support built-in eSIMs with its Project Fi — now called Google Fi — network last year. “Sprint in the US, EE in the UK, Airtel and Reliance Jio in India, and Truphone and Gigsky in various countries will also roll out eSIM support for Pixel 3 in the coming months,” Kerrie Lenhart Hogan, Director, Partnerships at Google, said in a statement.

“If you’re in Germany, look out for the ability to purchase Pixel 3 with eSIM functionality from Deutsche Telekom and Vodafone soon,” added the search giant. To recall, the Google Pixel 2 was the first major smartphone with eSIM — an embedded SIM that lets you instantly connect to a carrier network with the tap of a button.

With eSIM, users can connect across devices in the Google ecosystem — from Android smartphones to Chromebooks to Wear OS smartwatches. “To enable a consistent and simple experience across the ecosystem, we’re also creating a programme that allows Android device makers to build eSIM-capable smartphones,” said Google.

Launched in October, “Pixel 3” costs Rs 71,000 for the 64GB variant in India and up to Rs 80,000 for the 128GB storage variant. The “Pixel 3 XL” is available at Rs 83,000 for the 64GB variant and up to Rs 92,000 for the 128GB model.

The first eSIM devices to launch in India was the Apple iPhone XS, XS Max. Later on, the Apple iPhone XR was also launched. Now, Google is rolling out the feature to its Pixel 3 devices in collaboration with Bharti Airtel and Reliance Jio. Google is now said to be working on a Pixel smartphone with the newly announced Snapdragon 710 Mobile Platform, which is slated for early 2019 release and not this year. This new leak falls in-line with the earlier report of Google working on a mid-range device with Snapdragon 600 series chipset. But with Qualcomm releasing the upgrade to Snapdragon 660 SoC in the form of Snapdragon 710 SoC, Google seems to have shifted onto the latest chipset. Tipster Roland Quandt posted this news on Twitter, but the sad part is the release date, which for now is said to be in the first half of 2019 and not during the Pixel 3 devices launch. However, the tipster immediately posted that he’s not aware of the company’s plans for this year on launching a mid-range Pixel device and he doesn’t have any additional information about the Snapdragon 710-powered smartphone.
Maybe this is the mid-range Pixel smartphone Google is working on for some time. Earlier, a Chinese blog reported that Google is working a mid-range Pixel smartphone exclusively for the Indian market. But that report claimed the phone would be part of Android Go program, which is highly unlikely. Furthermore, a recent report from the same tipster stated that Google has recently started working on Pixel 3 smartphones and is considering an early release, probably in September itself to compete with the Apple iPhones. The upcoming Pixel 3 smartphones are expected to feature the Snapdragon 845 processor and also upgraded cameras. Of course, they will come with Android P out of the box, like every generation Pixel smartphone. The possible mid-range Pixel smartphone with Snapdragon 710 processor will be an excellent move from the search giant. And if Google gets the pricing right, it will be a gamechanger for the company. Right now, in several markets, the sub $400 or Rs 25,000 price bracket doesn’t have many options for the consumers to choose from. If Google launches the rumoured device around Rs 25,000 in the Indian market with decent cameras and stock Android, it will secure excellent market share for the search giant.

Launching in late summer at the earliest, the Google Pixel 3 will likely be one of the best Android phones of the year, and indeed a device that’s worth waiting for. But after more than ten years of Android, after seven generations of Nexus phones, the third Pixel phone will not bring anything really new to the mobile business. Yes, it’ll sport a variety of improvements over last year’s phones, which will place it right at the top of the crop. But Google best-ever phone will also represent the culmination of a decade of missed opportunities. We learned this week that Google is making two Pixel phones with Foxconn, including the Pixel 3 and the Pixel 3 XL. Unlike last year, the phones won’t be identical when it comes to design and features. The bigger phone is getting an iPhone X makeover, but Google’s clone will be incredibly ugly compared to other clones.
The phone is also going to feature a dual selfie camera, rumors say. The Pixel 3, meanwhile, will come without a notch, a design that already feels old. There’s doesn’t seem to be anything exciting about these phones if all these renders are accurate, and Google only has itself to blame for having to play catch-up with Apple. The Pixel 3 launches in the second half or the year, but it’ll have a design Apple showed to the world last fall. And everyone, save for Samsung, copied it. In addition to notch support, Android P comes with new navigation gestures that Google implemented solely because Apple showed it the light. Furthermore, I would not be surprised if there’s a dual camera on the back of the Pixel 3 XL, something that Apple has not invented, but made popular within the industry.
And Google may end up copying Apple in spite of repeatedly criticizing the iPhone. When the Pixel 2 arrived last year, sporting a stale design in a mobile landscape that was already dominated by all-screen phones, it surprised the world because of the absence of the headphone jack. It was just a year before that that Google mocked the iPhone 7 for lacking the audio port. Google missed the forest for the trees, it turns out; you need to remove the 3.5mm port to make room for extra screen real estate. What I’m getting at is that Google is forced to copy Apple and do a lousy job at it precisely because it ignored hardware for so many years. You can’t make an iPhone X without having an iPhone 7. And there’s no iPhone 7 without the iPhone 6/6s. And so on. Google failed to replicate Apple’s way of carefully evolving the iPhone into the piece of tech it is today, and Apple’s audacity to do things others only dreamt of in R&D.
Google has had the money to do it, but the company has failed to focus on hardware since the days of the Nexus. The main reason for that was its need to keep its partners in place so that Android could become the most important mobile operating system in the world. That’s why it ignored Motorola, which could have been used to create great Google Nexus and Pixel phones. That’s why it missed the opportunity to play hardball with carriers and transform its phones into must-have devices for them. And it certainly missed out on establishing crucial supply partnerships that would give it a significant edge over the competition. The iPhone X was for months the only phone with 3D facial recognition because only Apple has access to the essential parts that make Face ID possible. Made by Samsung but based on Apple specs, the OLED screen in the iPhone X has no rival. Not because of the screen’s color reproduction or performance, but because it occupies almost the entire front of the phone, from corner to corner (image above). The Pixel 3 XL, meanwhile, will have an incredibly ugly bottom chin. And let’s not forget the screen issues of the Pixel 2, which Google sourced from LG, the same company that manufactured it.
By the way, remember the Nexus 6 that had no fingerprint sensor? That’s because Apple got the best sensors in town, and Google decided against using one. Apple has the power to negotiate better deals, secure supply chains, and demand novel smartphone components from its partners. Apple and the iPhone make and break suppliers. Google doesn’t have that power. Google can’t even make enough Pixels to meet demand, which, again, shows that Google has been ignoring opportunities left and right for the most of its mobile history. For years, Google failed to build a strong hardware team, and master the logistics required to sell tens if not hundreds of millions of phones every year. That’s why the Pixel 3 will still trail the iPhone. One other thing Google missed out on is the rapid acquisition of new talent. Buying most of the mobile division of a company that hasn’t been able to sell a lot of phones isn’t it. Apple, meanwhile, purchased a slew of hot startups to make a better iPhone. Lacking the desire, vision, or need to make a better Nexus or Pixel, Google likely ignored some of the companies that ended up in Apple’s pocket. Authentec, the company behind the fingerprint sensing tech introduced by the iPhone 5s, was purchased by Apple. PrimeSense, which made the Kinect for Microsoft, and whose 3D tech is likely behind the Face ID camera, also belongs to Apple. These are just two examples, but there are many more. With all that in mind, the Pixel 3 will be a great phone, but once again, not a game changer. At this rate, it might take Google a long time to challenge the iPhone dominance.

We are already aware that search giant Google is working on its next generation Pixel lineup of smartphones. The yet-to-be launched Pixel smartphones are said to come with edge-to-edge display and with the new smartphones the company is planning to take on the next generation of iPhones. According to a report, Google is planning to launch the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL with new design in October this year. As reported by Bloomberg, Google will stick to its two device strategy and will only launch Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL, unlike Apple, who is planning to launch three iPhones this year. The big screen Pixel 3 XL is said to come with an edge-to-edge display and will compete against the iPhone X. The smartphone will have narrow bezels on the side, but a thick chin of bezel will remain at the bottom. Like the other recently launched smartphones, the Pixel 3 XL will also have the iPhone X-like notch display.
The report also reaffirms an image of the screen protectors of Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL released sometime back. The Pixel 3 will have a smaller notch but it will be noticeable. The company also showcased it plans to incorporate the notch in upcoming devices at the Android P developer preview. The Google Pixel 3 is said to have the same design as its predecessor and will not have an edge-to-edge display. Both the new smartphones will be launched in October just month after the Apple launch. The devices are said to come with Verizon in US and the company is also talking to Foxconn for manufacturing the 2018 Pixel smartphones. The report by Bloomberg further adds that Google is in no hurry to join the dual camera bandwagon and will stick to single camera only. However, the company is planning to add a dual selfie camera to the upcoming Pixel smartphones.

Of all the hotly anticipated new smartphones still set to be released over the course of 2018, Google’s Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL are the furthest from becoming a reality. The LG G7 ThinQ and HTC U12+ are both in the process of rolling out now, and Motorola has some launches coming soon as well. Then the next big phone reveal will be Samsung’s Galaxy Note 9, which will be followed by the even more eagerly anticipated release of Apple’s 2018 iPhone lineup. There, we’ll likely see three new iPhone X successors launch, including an “iPhone X 2,” a larger “iPhone X Plus” with a 6.5-inch OLED display, and a new mid-range model with the iPhone X’s design but a much lower price point. That third new iPhone model, which will reportedly feature a 6.1-inch LCD screen, will likely be Apple’s most popular new iPhone in 2018 thanks to the new, lower price tag. Finally, after all that is said and done, Google is expected to release its new Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL sometime in October 2018.
They won’t be the best-selling Android smartphones of the year — not by a long shot. But Google’s new Pixel phones are always the choice of hardcore Android fans who want a pure Android experience and instant access to big Android software updates the moment they’re released. 2018 is shaping up to be a somewhat controversial year for Google’s Pixel lineup since the larger and more desirable Pixel 3 XL is expected to copy the iPhone X’s notch design, and hardcore Android fans inherently hate anything and everything Apple does. Luckily for Android fanboys, however, Google likely has a solution in store to appease them, and we might have just gotten our first look at that solution in action thanks to a recent leak. Earlier this week, the world may have gotten its first taste at the designs Google plans to use on its upcoming Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL flagship smartphones. That taste came courtesy of a photo that purportedly showed two screen protectors, one for the upcoming Pixel 3 and a second for the larger Pixel 3 XL phablet. Now, seeing screen protectors obviously isn’t the same as seeing the phones themselves, but if they’re genuine they do show us the design Google plans to use on its new Pixel phones. Here’s that leaked image, in case you missed it the first time around: As you can see, the screen protectors indicate that Google plans to decrease the size of the bezels on its new Pixel 3 lineup this year.
Both new models will still have a “chin” bezel below the displays, and the smaller Pixel 3 will also apparently have a somewhat large bezel above the screen. But the bigger Pixel 3 XL design shown in this leak uses Apple’s iPhone X notch design at the top of the screen in order to maximize display real estate. Again, there’s no way at the moment to confirm that this design is accurate. That said, it wouldn’t come as much of a surprise. So many Android phones have copied Apple’s notch that Google actually baked notch support right into Android P, the company’s big 2018 update set to be released later this year. Pixel phones are always a showcase of the latest and greatest Android features, so it stands to reason that Google would want to showcase the notch on at least one of its 2018 Pixel phones. Based on the leak above, a cell phone blog cooked up renders of what Google’s new Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL should look like when they launch.
There’s a very good chance that those renders will end up being our first look at Google’s new Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL designs, though we obviously cannot confirm that for the time being. The smaller Pixel 3 has a design that is somewhat dated thanks to those big bezels above and below the screen, but the Pixel 3 XL looks just as sleek as any other recent Android flagship phone. It does clone the iPhone X’s notch though, which is something that hardcore Android fans haven’t been happy about with regard to all the other recent phones that copy Apple’s design. Of course, many of those phones also offer a related feature that Apple does not: The ability to hide the notch. Phones like the LG G7 ThinQ and OnePlus 6 include a setting in the phone’s software to hide the notch by making the background black. Then, only status bar icons and notification icons are displayed on either side of the notch. There’s a very good chance that Google will offer this option as well, and now a Reddit user named “fondantsnail” has created a Pixel 3 XL render that shows us what the phone might look like with the notch hidden:

We have already seen a number of big smartphone launches so far in 2018, from Samsung’s Galaxy S9 and the LG G7 ThinQ to the just-released OnePlus 6 that now holds the coveted title of most powerful smartphone in the world. That’s right, it’s even faster than Apple’s latest iPhones, which is quite an accomplishment even considering the software issues that currently plague iOS 11. Huawei’s P20 Pro was also released earlier this year, and it packs the best camera the world has ever seen on a smartphone (don’t worry, you can still get a Huawei P20 Pro right now even though Trump’s White House doesn’t want you to have it), and the HTC U12+ was also just unveiled last week.
Despite all those huge smartphone launches, the most hotly anticipated smartphone releases of the year are all still to come. The Galaxy Note 9 will be released sometime in August if recent rumors are to be believed, and Apple’s new 2018 iPhone lineup won’t debut until September. Then, once that’s all said and done, Google will debut its new Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL smartphones. We still have a long wait before Google’s 2018 Pixel phones become a reality, but a new leak may have already given us our first look at Google’s new Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL designs. Yesterday we shared a potentially huge Google leak that left people with mixed emotions. On one hand, seeing a leak that may have revealed Google’s Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL smartphone designs is obviously a big deal. On the other hand, the larger and often more desirable new Pixel phone may turn out to be a huge disappointment to many potential buyers.
Pixel phones are typically purchased by the most hardcore Android fans out there. They want a “pure” Android experience, and they also want to get big software updates the moment they’re released, not six months later. Google’s own Pixel phones are the only way to make either of those things happen. Of course, hardcore Android fans also have something else in common: they tend to inherently hate anything Apple does because… well… Apple. This could be a big problem in 2018 though, because it looks like the Pixel 3 XL is going to copy the same iPhone design feature that most other Android phones are copying this year. We’re talking about the iPhone X’s notch, of course, and yesterday’s leak showed an unmistakable notch at the top of the Pixel 3 XL’s screen. The image above is believed to show screen protectors for Google’s upcoming Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL smartphones, and they obviously reveal a great deal about the phones’ designs if they’re genuine.
We can see that both phones will have large “chins” at the bottom since no other companies want to invest the time and effort it took for Apple to eliminate the bottom bezel, and they also appear to have dual front-facing cameras at the top. The smaller Pixel 3 appears to have a large bezel above the display in addition to the chin, while the Pixel 3 XL will apparently clone the iPhone X’s notch. Using these leaked screen protectors and Google’s earlier Pixel smartphones as a guide, cell phone blog Phone Arena created renders of the Google Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL. Nothing has been confirmed for the time being, of course, but there’s a very good chance that these renders are very good representations of what we can expect from Google later this year when it unveils its 2018 smartphone lineup. If all this pans out, it’ll be interesting to see how receptive Android “fanboys” are to a Pixel 3 XL that obviously apes Apple’s iPhone X design. Our guess? They’ll find a way to convince themselves that Google didn’t copy the iPhone X, and the notch won’t stop them from buying the latest, greatest smartphone from Google.

The minute Android P came out in developer preview released a few months ago, I immediately told you the Pixel 3 is likely to copy Apple’s iPhone X design. My theory was that Google wouldn’t just add notch support in Android P for third-party Android devices, and it too was likely planning to release smartphones that mimic Apple’s notch from the iPhone X. By embracing the notch in Android P, Google is seemingly suggesting that the Pixel 3 series phones will all have an all-screen design similar to the iPhone X. And it looks like proof the Pixel 3’s notch may be hiding in plain sight.
Google last week released the Android P public beta, after revealing more details about the new Android update at I/O 2018, including the new iPhone X-like gestures coming to Android. It turns out that the beta does contain one detail that hints at the potential Pixel 3 design. As Android Police explains, Android P brings a new way of showing notifications that hint a Pixel 3 notch is in the works. On the left of the screen, as you can see in the image above, you’ll only get up to four notifications. That’s it. The remaining space between the left and right sides of the screen does not get any content. That’s where the notch will probably be on the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL. Google may have hard-coded these UI limitations in Android P to account for the design of its Pixel 3 phones.
We already know the Pixel 3 exists, and that Google is already actively testing it. And from the looks of it, the Pixel 3’s notch might be more substantial than others. However, don’t get too excited about Google replicating Face ID just yet. If you’re an Android fan who was hoping that Google’s upcoming Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL smartphones would save you from all the iPhone X copycats out there that Android phone makers have been releasing, we’re sorry to be the bearers of bad news. Don’t worry though, because Apple reportedly plans to ditch the notch design as soon as next year, which means Android vendors will obviously follow suit!
