Right after Reliance Jio introducing a new yearly prepaid plan, state-run telecom service provider BSNL has launched a new annual plan of Rs 1,097, providing benefits for 365 days. Sadly, this plan from BSNL comes with just data and voice calling benefits, unlike Jio’s prepaid plan which gives data, voice calling and SMS benefits for the same period. In addition, BSNL has launched this new plan only in Kolkata circle and it will be valid until January 6, 2019. Having said that, the benefits of this new plan from BSNL doesn’t even come close to what Jio is offering with its new plan of Rs 1,699. But it’s an excellent plan for heavy voice-calling users.

Telecom operator Vodafone India has introduced a new prepaid plan of Rs 597 for both feature phone and smartphone users. The Rs 597 prepaid recharge offers benefits for 168 days for feature phone users and the same plan providers benefits for 112 days for smartphone users. Notably, Bharti Airtel also has a Rs 597 prepaid recharge solely for smartphone users, unlike Vodafone. With its new prepaid plan of Rs 597, Vodafone is giving a total of 10GB data benefit, unlimited voice calls with a cap and 100 text messages per day. So smartphone users can enjoy these benefits for 112 days, whereas these benefits are exceptional for feature phone users because it’s valid for 168 days. The data benefit offered by this plan can be enjoyed on 4G or 3G or 2G.

BSNL Rs 1,097 Prepaid Plan: Benefits and Details

Talking about the benefits offered by this plan, users will get a total of 25GB data which should be used during the entire plan validity of 365 days. The plan also comes bundled with unlimited voice calling benefit, but again, you can make voice calls to numbers located in Mumbai and Delhi circles. On the brighter side, BSNL is not capping voice calls to 250 minutes or 1000 minutes like Vodafone Idea. Also, there’s no after FUP speed provided by BSNL with this prepaid plan, which is underwhelming.

BSNL Rs 1,097 Prepaid Plan vs Jio Rs 1,699 Yearly Plan

Right now, the best yearly prepaid plan is provided by the Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance Jio itself. Jio, which recently amassed 250 million subscribers has introduced a prepaid plan of Rs 1,699, offering benefits for 365 days. Under the newly launched plan, Jio is giving its 1.5GB of 4G data per day, unlimited voice calls which can be used across all the 22 telecom circles and 100 SMS per day.

As you can see, BSNL’s newly introduced plan of Rs 1,097 falls short of Jio’s plan by a huge margin. Even the voice calling and data benefit offered by Jio are nowhere close to what Jio’s providing.

BSNL Rs 1,097 Prepaid Plan is Aimed at Heavy Voice Calling Users

In the last couple of years, telecom subscribers in the country have seen a considerable amount of data-centric plans launching by the telcos, but in recent times, private telcos such as Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea are coming up with voice-only plans aimed at feature phone users and basic smartphone users.

Vodafone Idea and Airtel came up with Active Recharges and Smart Recharge schemes under which they’re bundling talk time, data and rate cutter benefits with a validity of 28 days to 84 days. Alternatively, they also launched a plethora of combo prepaid plans with data, voice calling and SMS benefits for a longer duration.

For example, Vodafone India introduced a Rs 189 prepaid plan which is giving unlimited voice calling with a limit, 2GB of data for a period of 56 days. Before this plan’s arrival, we haven’t seen any prepaid plan with 56-day validity under Rs 200. Subsequently, Airtel introduced a Rs 289 prepaid recharge which is giving 4GB of data and unlimited voice calling for 84 days to select users across the country.

It will be interesting to see how BSNL reacts to these tariff plans from Airtel and Vodafone Idea.

Vodafone Rs 597 Prepaid Plan Benefits

Talking about the benefits offered by the plan, users will get unlimited local, STD and roaming calls within India, 10GB of 4G/3G data and 100 SMS per day for 112 days. Sadly, Vodafone is limiting the voice calls at 250 minutes per day, 1000 minutes per week and the calls can only be made to 100 unique numbers during the entire validity period.

As mentioned above, the validity for smartphone users is 112 days, and for feature phone users, the same benefits can be availed for 168 days.

Vodafone Rs 597 vs Airtel Rs 597 Prepaid Plan

Airtel was the first operator to launch the Rs 597 prepaid plan. Airtel is offering this plan for prepaid users in some circles, and it offers unlimited voice calls without any FUP limit, 100 SMS per day and 10GB data for 168 days. While Vodafone is offering the same plan for 112 days for smartphone users, Airtel is providing the same for 168 days. It’s unknown whether Airtel has any special validity for feature phone users.

Vodafone Rs 597 Plan is Valid Across all 4G Circles

As seen with some other tariff plans launched recently by Vodafone, this new Rs 597 plan is also valid in the company’s 4G circles. For example, Vodafone introduced a Rs 159 prepaid plan offering benefits of 1GB data per day, unlimited voice calls and 100 SMS per day for 28 days is also being launched in only the company’s 4G circles.

Vodafone is Aiming at Voice-Calling Users With This Plan

First and foremost, this plan from Vodafone is aimed at voice-calling users. For instance, Vodafone did not launch a single prepaid plan under Rs 1,000 with validity over 100 days. But this Rs 597 plan offers benefits for 112 days for smartphone users and for feature phone users, it’s the best bet.

Vodafone Takes on Jio’s Rs 594 JioPhone First Recharge Plan

For the unaware, Reliance Jio recently started its JioPhone Monsoon Hungama offer, under which the telco is giving a JioPhone at just Rs 501 for users exchanging their old working feature phone. Also, at the time of availing the feature phone offer, Jio has set a mandate that customers should recharge with Rs 594 plan, which gives benefits for six months. Vodafone’s Rs 597 plan for feature phone users takes on the same recharge plan from Jio.

Vodafone Launches 1.5GB Daily Data Plans

In recent times, Vodafone has been aggressively launching new prepaid plans every now and then. The country’ second largest telco recently unveiled three plans of Rs 209, Rs 479 and Rs 529, offering 1.5GB daily data, unlimited voice calls with a cap and 100 SMS per day for 28 days, 84 days and 90 days respectively.

Doubtlessly the data prepaid tariff war in India is growing bitter with every passing day. The telcos are launching new data plans, offers and cashbacks to retain and increase their customer base. On the same lines, BSNL (Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited) has introduced its new data STV pack of Rs 98. Under this pack users will get 39GB data with a validity of 26 days at the meagre price of Rs 98. This price makes it one of the hottest data offers available under Rs 100. BSNL prepaid customers in all circles can recharge their SIM using this STV either by heading to the BSNL website or by visiting other third-party portals for recharge. This new data plan by BSNL has been named the ‘Data Tsunami’ plans and it goes head on against the Rs 98 prepaid plan by Reliance Jio and also against the Rs 99 plan by Bharti Airtel. Although, there aren’t any calling or SMS benefit included in this pack, however, BSNL offers 1.5GB of data per day making it one of the most attractive plans available at this price point. So BSNL is offering per GB of data at just Rs 1.5, which by far is the lowest by any telecom operator in the country.
BSNL Gears Up for Intensifying Prepaid Battle by Offering Data Packs Under Rs 100
Reliance Jio is also offering per GB of data at Rs 1.5 with its Rs 149 plan, but it’s valid for 28 days. Also, the Rs 149 plan from Jio gives unlimited voice calls and SMS benefits too. Since it’s the peak stage of Indian Premier League 2018, this plan will lure a lot of BSNL customers and its been a while since BSNL introduced a new tariff plan in the country. Surely, this new STV 98 will get a lot of attention from the crowd. BSNL, last month also introduced a dedicated IPL of Rs 248, under which it offered 3GB data benefit per day for 51 days, but the STV 98 offers 1.5GB data per day for 26 days itself. As mentioned, this plan is already effective in all the circles across the country where BSNL has its operations. Reliance Jio, with its data plan of Rs 98 is offering 2GB of high-speed data, unlimited voice calls for 28 days. Do make a note that BSNL is still offering 3G data benefit only and not 4G data like other private telecom operators.

Patanjali SIM's plan is in direct competition with other leading players like Jio and Airtel. BSNL on Tuesday tweeted details of the new recharge pack- 'BSN-Patanjali -144 plan'. With the launch of Patanjali-BSNL Swadeshi Sammriddhi SIM for Patanjali employees, members of its associated organisations and those holding Swadeshi Samriddhi Card offered by Yoga guru Ramdev’s organisation, the comparison of cheapest telecom plan has become inevitable. Patanjali SIM’s plan is in direct competition with other leading players like Jio and Airtel. BSNL on Tuesday tweeted details of the new recharge pack- ‘BSN-Patanjali -144 plan’. Other plans that have been launched by Patanjali-BSNL are priced at Rs 792 and Rs 1,584.

With new plans launching every other day, it’s hard to keep a track of what plans are available in the market and which one actually suit your needs. The war for market share among the telcos is getting more competitive day by day. Airtel reported its first loss in fifteen years, Idea continues to report a loss for the fourth quarter and other incumbents continue their run of losses. But, as the telecom companies continue to fight to gain customers, the latest data plans are offering more data at cheaper prices with every passing day. With so many plans available from multiple operators, it’s hard to choose a single plan from the lot, so here the top plans from all major telecom companies at a single place. BSNL’s Holi Dhamaka Postpaid Plan Offers Unlimited Roaming Calls and 30GB Data at Rs 399
State-run telecom operator, Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has launched a new Unlimited calling plan to any network with 30GB data per month at Rs 399 per month under Postpaid mobile services. The BSNL Plan-399, which is also known as Holi Dhamaka plan offers unlimited voice calls (local/STD) to any network even on roaming, free 30GB data per month per billing cycle.
On the occasion of Holi, the Plan 399 is effective from March 1, 2018, on PAN India basis. Shri R.K.Mittal, Director (CM) BSNL Board told that this postpaid offering with unlimited calling and 30 GB data at Rs. 399/- per month is one of the best in the industry. This extremely competitive and economical postpaid plan is for our existing & new customers. We are committed to providing affordable and efficient services to our customers.
Details in this regard may be seen at our website www.bsnl.co.in. This Plan 399 is BSNL’s take on Airtel and Vodafone’s Rs 399 postpaid plan. And it’s offering better data benefit than the two private telecom operators. Airtel and Vodafone are offering 20GB data per month with their Rs 399 postpaid plans, while BSNL is giving 30GB data per month.
However, Airtel and Vodafone are also providing data rollover scheme, which BSNL lacks and may never implement too. Also, this Plan 399 from BSNL doesn’t offer any SMS benefits, same as Vodafone’s Rs 399 Red Basic plan. Airtel is offering 100 SMS per day with its myPlan Infinity Rs 399 plan, so it has an advantage in this regard. BSNL should have added SMS benefits with this plan though.
The government-owned telco recently introduced a Ghar Wapsi Rs 399 postpaid plan, which also offers unlimited voice calls and 30GB data per month, but the Holi Dhamaka postpaid gives unlimited roaming calls as well. Also, we’re not sure whether the Ghar Wapsi plan is a Pan India plan or not. Nevertheless, BSNL promised to introduce this Rs 399 postpaid plan, and it introduced to stay in the competition.

BSNL Confirmed to Launch 4G Services in Arunachal Pradesh Very Soon
Earlier today, BSNL confirmed that it’s going to launch 4G services in Itanagar and Naharlagun regions in Arunachal Pradesh very soon. Also, the officials of BSNL in Arunachal region said that the company already rolled out high-speed Wi-Fi hotspots in Itanagar, Naharlagun, Bordumsa, Chowkham, Dimwe, Kharsang and Likabali Army telephone exchanges regions of Arunachal Pradesh.
“BSNL general manager Dilip Siram and assistant general manager Arung Siram told a Telecom Advisory Committee (TAC) meeting here yesterday that the public telecom service provider has launched Wi-Fi hotspots at Itanagar, Naharlagun, Bordumsa, Chowkham, Dimwe, Kharsang and Likabali Army telephone exchanges,” reported Press Trust of India. Ninong Ering, Congress MP from Arunachal East constituency also attended the meeting and even stressed the need for extra efforts to push telecom network to every nook and corner of the landlocked Himalayan state. Just a couple of weeks ago, BSNL announced 4G services in some regions of Kerala state.
But it’s just a soft launch as BSNL used 3G spectrum to launch 4G spectrum. BSNL is also setting up 4G Plus Wi-Fi hotspots in various cities across the country and even revised the entire tariff portfolio of these hotspots. BSNL is expected to roll out full fledged 4G services after the next spectrum auction.

BSNL Unveils New Unlimited Voice Calling Recharges at Rs. 99, Rs. 319
BSNL on Friday announced a new special tariff voucher (STV) for its prepaid mobile customers that gives unlimited voice calling (local/ STD), national roaming (except in Delhi, Mumbai), personalised ring back tone (PRBT), and a validity of 26 days. The Rs. 99 STV is available on a pan-India basis. Alongside, the state-owned telecom operator also launched the Rs. 319 STV that offers most of the same benefits with a 90-day validity.
The only visible difference (apart from validity) between the BSNL Rs. 99 STV and Rs. 319 STV prepaid recharges is the availability of a PRBT offering. Shri R.K. Mittal, Director (CM) BSNL Board in a statement added that BSNL is committed to provide affordable and efficient services to its customers.
These special tariff vouchers are only for voice calls and gives unlimited calling to those customers who are not using data services, he added. Earlier this week, BSNL unveiled a new 'Maximum' prepaid pack for its users in India. Under this offer, BSNL prepaid customers will get unlimited data access for 365 days and unlimited voice calls (Local and STD) for 181 days at Rs. 999.
The new BSNL prepaid plan is available in all circles except North-East India, Jammu and Kashmir, and Assam. However, there are a few changes after the initial 181 days of recharge. When it comes to the data benefits, BSNL is offering unlimited free data with a 1GB limit per day.
Following this, users will get Internet data at 40kbps speeds. In terms of voice calling, all local, STD and roaming calls are free excluding the Delhi and Mumbai circles. Meanwhile, voice calls in Mumbai and Delhi will be priced at 60 paise per minute, under this offer.
The tariff, however, changes after 181 days, after which all on-net and off-net calls (home and roaming) will be charged at 60 paise per min. In the first 181 days, BSNL prepaid subscribers will be able to avail 100 free SMS messages per day. However, after this, users will be charged 25 paise per local SMS and 35 paise per national SMS.

BSNL Is Offering Unlimited Data and Voice Calls Without Any Restriction With the Rs 1595 Postpaid Plan
The whole internet is filled with prepaid tariff plans because they offer better value for money. But on the other side, telecom players are looking to bridge the gap between prepaid and postpaid connections. Government-owned PSU, Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has one such postpaid plan of Rs 1,595 which offers unlimited benefits for a month and that too without any limit.
The Rs 1,595 postpaid plan gives unlimited voice calls and data without any limit, while the SMS benefits are limited with this plan. As per the official BSNL website, the Rs 1,595 postpaid plan is available for all the BSNL postpaid subscribers across the country. The telco will be collecting a security deposit of Rs 500 if you’re a new customer joining the postpaid network. Talking about the benefits offered by this plan, it offers unlimited on-net and off-net calls.
And there are two benefits over here: firstly, the calls are truly unlimited, and there’s no FUP limit, and secondly, a user can make voice calls to a landline number too. And the data benefit is unlimited too without any FUP and speed restriction. BSNL is the only telco offering unlimited data without any restriction. And lastly, we get to the SMS benefits. This BSNL postpaid plan offers just 250 SMS per billing cycle which is underwhelming. BSNL should have added at least 100 SMS per day like other telecom operators.
That’s it, BSNL is not offering additional benefits such as any digital content subscription or magazines subscription like other private telecom operators. But the best part of this plan is unlimited data and voice calls. On top of that, BSNL also introduced a unique offer called ‘Loot Lo’ back in November 2017, offering a discount for users choosing postpaid plans on quarterly or half-yearly or yearly basis. BSNL is offering up to 60% discount for the customers choosing long-term validity. However, we’re not sure whether this offer is currently live or not, but it is listed on the offline BSNL website though.

BSNL Introduces Three New 4G Plus WiFi Plans, Revises Existing Plans With Better Data Benefit
Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd, the state-run telecom operator, now revised its 4G Plus tariff plans, which allows a customer to connect to a BSNL Wi-Fi Hotspot in the available region. Alongside revising the existing plans, the telco also launched three new 4G Plus WiFi plans. The revised plans are now offering better data benefit than earlier, as expected. The BSNL 4G Plus WiFi plans now start at Rs 10 and goes all the way up to Rs 1,999. And the data benefit ranges from 300MB with the entry-level plan to 150GB with the premium plan. The new plans are BSNL WiFi 50 of Rs 50, BSNL WiFi 90 of Rs 90 and BSNL WiFi 500 of Rs 500. The Rs 50 plan gives 2GB of free data for 14 days, the Rs 90 plan offers 4GB of free data for 28 days, and the Rs 500 plan offers 30GB of data for 28 days. As stated, the 4G Plus WiFi plans start at Rs 10 which is the base plan as it gives 300MB of data with one-day validity.
BSNL Introduces Three New 4G Plus WiFi Plans, Revises Existing Plans With Better Data Benefit

Next up, we have plans of Rs 20, Rs 30, Rs 40, Rs 60, Rs 75, Rs 80, Rs 100 under Rs 100. The Rs 20 plan provides a user with 500MB of free data for three days, whereas the Rs 30 and Rs 40 plan offers 1GB and 1.5GB free data for 14 days. Coming to the premium plans, BSNL is offering Rs 999 and Rs 1,999 plans with more data offering. The Rs 999 4G Plus WiFi plan will now offer 75GB of free data, while the Rs 1999 plan gives 160GB of free data. Both the plans are valid for 28 days from the date of recharge. Check the below image for all the revised plan details. BSNL is currently in the process of adding more 4G Plus WiFi hotspots across the country. The BSNL 4G Plus WiFi vouchers are available for both prepaid and postpaid users. But for BSNL postpaid users, the company also has another scheme of BSNL Broad Fi which allows the BSNL postpaid customers to enjoy data without any extra charges. Do make a note that these are pan-India plans, meaning any BSNL customer can purchase this plan if their location has a BSNL 4G Plus WiFi hotspot.

BSNL to offer more data, validity under select prepaid plans
State-run telecom firm BSNL today extended validity of select prepaid mobile plans by 43% and increased the data offered by 50%, with an aim to counter Reliance Jio's latest offer. "Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has introduced BSNL 'Happy Offer' for prepaid mobile customers -- 43% extra validity and 50% additional data with unlimited local, STD and roaming calls for prepaid mobile customers," the company said in a statement. Under the scheme, pre-paid plan priced at Rs 485 will give 1.5 GB data per day with validity of 90 days and Rs 666 will give 1.5 GB per day data with validity of 129 days with unlimited local, STD and roaming calls.
BSNL customers subscribing to Rs 186 plan voucher and Rs 187 special tariff voucher will get 1 GB data per day with 28 days validity. Similarly, Rs 349 and Rs 429 plans will get 1GB data per day with 54 days and 81 days validity, respectively. All the plans will offer 100 SMSes per day. Reliance Jio had earlier slashed tariffs by Rs 50 for all its monthly schemes under which customers are getting 1 GB data per day and also enhanced data limit to 1.5 GB from the existing 1GB for select plans from January 9 onwards.

BSNL Revises Entire Tariff Portfolio Rs 485 Pack Now Offers 1.5GB Per Day Unlimited Voice Calls for 90 Days
Well, BSNL (Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited) has stepped into the tariff game again. After being out of sorts for a couple of months, BSNL has revised its entire tariff portfolio starting from the Rs 186 plan to BSNL Sixer 666 plan. These new changes will be effective from January 15, 2018. Overall, BSNL revised six tariff plans- Rs 186, Rs 187, Rs 349, Rs 429, Rs 485, and Rs 666. And these plans are now on-par with incumbent telecom operators tariff plans, especially in-line with Jio’s recently introduced packs.
BSNL PV 186 and BSNL STV 187 BSNL has revised its entry-level Rs 186 and Rs 187 tariff plans. Both the plans now offer unlimited voice calls, 1GB data per day, and 100 SMS per day for 28 days from the date of recharge. Earlier, the Rs 186 plan used to offer just local and STD calls in the home circle, but now, both the plans are offering similar benefits. The unlimited calls include both home and national roaming calls.
BSNL STV 349 and PV 429 on the list, we have the Rs 349 and Rs 429 packs from the state-run telco. They both offer the same unlimited voice calls, 1GB data per day, and 100 SMS per day. But the validity differs. The Rs 349 plan is valid for 54 days while the Rs 429 gives benefits for 81 days.
BSNL PV 485 and BSNL PV 666 Plan Lastly, we have two long-validity plans for the government-owned telecom operator. BSNL’s Rs 485 tariff plan which recently got a validity reduction has now been revised to offer 1.5GB data per day and that too for 90 days from the date of recharge. BSNL, a few days ago revised the Rs 485 tariff plan to offer 1GB Data per day for 74 days. It’s good to see BSNL reacting in such a quick time.
And finally, we have the Sixer 666 tariff plan. This is one of the best plans from BSNL’s house right now as it gives 1.5GB data per day, unlimited voice calls and 100 SMS per day for 129 days. Yes, you heard it right, this plan offers benefits for 129 days from the date of recharge. So these are the tariff plans from BSNL, and they’re now in-line with private operators plans. Unlimited voice calls in roaming are not applicable to Mumbai and Delhi because BSNL is not operating in those circles.

BSNL To Set Up 1 Lakh Wi-Fi Hotspots By 2019 - Offers Free GST SolutionBSNL will be investing around Rs. 1,800 crore to set up 70,000 WiFi hotspots all across the country. USOF (Universal Service Obligation Fund) will provide a fund of Rs. 900 crore, which will include three years of operation and maintenance for setting up of another 25,000 WiFi hotspots.
The 25,000 WiFi hotspots will mainly focus rural areas, and the financial support for all the rural Wi-Fi hotspots will be provided by USOF.
They are all ready to set up 1 lakh Wi-Fi Hotspots across the country by the end of March 2019. Chairman and MD, Anupam Shrivastava confirmed this during the launch of GST Solutions Application for BSNL customers.

For another 5000 WiFi hotspots, they are working on a revenue share basis with a partner. BSNL will not invest any capital for it. The company will only provide bandwidth for these 5000 hotspots.

BSNL GST Solutions Service
State owned BSNL has launched a new GST solutions service for BSNL customers, GST Suvidha Provider (GSP) Service.

The GST Suvidha Provider Service is an exclusive collaboration between Masters India and BSNL, to provide assistance to the BSNL customers on the several procedures involved in GST, Anupam Shrivastava said.

The new GST service is an additional perk to BSNL customers, so that they choose to remain with the telco in this Jio-Cannibalization period. This will even attract more customers, as they have a new set of aggressive data plans ready (BSNL’s Unlimited Plan is surprisingly cheaper than Jio) with their new GST Solution Service.
The GST Suvidha Provider Service will be free of cost for BSNL customers. Any BSNL user can avail the service by visiting ‘www.bsnlgst.mastersindia.co website. The users are required to register themselves by using their own account numbers.
After they have registered with their account number on the website, they can straightaway start filing returns. The GST Suvidha Provider (GSP) Service has been divided in three different categories;

  1. Basic Plan – Free of cost and can be availed for up to 2,000 invoices in a year.
  2. Plus Plan – Costs Rs. 1,999 per year and can be availed for up to 6000 invoices in a year, which will include additional benefits.
  3. Pro Plan – Meant for Enterprises and will cost Rs. 1,999 per year. The company will have to pay a charge of Re. 1 per invoice beyond the limit of 6,000 invoices generated in a year.
Masters India will be providing the GST software to the customers of the GST Suvidha Provider (GSP) Service. ‘Masters India’ is one of the thirty four organizations selected by the Goods and Services Tax Network (GSTN).

At a time, when Jio is changing the dynamics of doing business in the Indian telecom market and the tariffs are hitting rock bottom, telcos have to explore other avenues of generating revenue, or soon they will be out of the competition.
The new GST filing service by BSNL in collaboration with Masters India will help the state-owned firm to attract more customers and generate more revenue.

Jio Test Users Shouldn’t Be Allowed To Use Commercial Services – Say Airtel And VodafoneReliance Jio has proved to be the greatest disruptor in the history of Indian Telecom industry. Other telecom operators were caught napping when Jio announced their tariff plans.
At launch, users were being offered services at effective zero cost. Reliance roped in their employees and their family members to be the test users by giving away free SIM cards.
They commenced their commercial operations in India in September 2016. But, it had started test services for its employees in December 2015.

Since its commercial launch, Reliance Jio has managed to garner a subscriber base of 100 million as of February 2017, within 6 months of its launch.

Vodafone and Bharti Airtel, have raised the issue of Jio’s test subscribers at an open house discussion which happened yesterday.

Acquiring Users Under Testing Phase Is Against License Conditions
This is what Vodafone has to say in this matter. The executive vice president, policy and regulation, at Vodafone India, Sandeep Kathuria has reiterated the fact that TRAI had raised the issue of compliance with DoT over the five lakh SIM cards issued by Jio.

“When the issue of acquiring subscribers in the garb of test users was raised by Vodafone last year, the same was dismissed by TRAI. However, it is now being discussed as if there was no clarity on the subject,” said Mr. Kathuria.
Bharti Airtel’s chief regulatory officer, Ravi Gandhi raised objections regarding test users being allowed to migrate to commercial services.
“There should not be subscriber acquisition in the name of testing, and there should be a time-limit for a network trial service,” said Mr. Gandhi.

Reliance Jio’s Counter-Argument
Reliance Jio has taken the stance that, Jio being India’s first LTE-only network, it had to do extensive testing before rolling out services commercially to customers.

This was however refuted by Ravi Gandhi from Bharti Airtel, who highlighted the fact that Airtel was the first to launch 4G LTE services in India, back in 2012.

In Conclusion…
Since its launch, Jio has proved to be a juggernaut which has forced other telecom operators to lower their tariffs in order to compete with Jio’s offerings. Thanks to the Jio effect, Indian mobile users are enjoying some of the cheapest tariff rates in the world.

Just when things seemed to be settling down between Jio and other operators, this fresh salvo has re-ignited the feud which seems to be going nowhere in a hurry.

Yet again, TRAI is in the spotlight. It is going be interesting to see how TRAI responds to these latest demands without upsetting the subscribers who are in danger of being victimized in this latest battle for market share.

Mobile Number Portability Will Get Easier, TRAI’s New ProposalMobile number portability or MNP is one of the most important pillars for creating a transparent and flexible telecom eco-system in India. Consumers should be able to switch to the carrier they prefer, rather than get stuck with their existing ones, without having to change their numbers.
However, there are few existing rules and regulations, which makes the whole process quite tedious, and time-taking. And precisely this the reason that Telecom Authority of India (TRAI) has proposed new guidelines for the same.
TRAI is clear on this issue: they want the whole MNP process to be easy, swift and seamless; and it seems that they are taking the right steps for ensuring that.

TRAI Wants To Reduce Mobile Number Portability Rejections
As per TRAI, around 40% of MNP requests are rejected, due to a technical issue related to Unique Porting Code (UPC). During the MNP process, if the UPC mismatches at the Point of Sales counter, then MNP is rejected.

Under the new proposal, TRAI has proposed that the whole process of UPC matching be made automatic, instead of manual, thereby rectifying 40% of all MNP cases.

This is what happens currently: Suppose a user of Idea wants to port out to Jio. Idea, the donor operator, will generate a 8-digit code called Unique Porting Code (UPC), which is provided to Jio, who is the receiving operator.

As the process of entering UPC is manual, the codes often mismatch, thereby rejecting the MNP process.

Proposed Changes Will Reduce MNP Rejections
Under the new proposal, the donor operator will now send the UPC to a MNP Clearing House. At the time of porting, the receiving operator will have to send a request to the MNP Clearing House for verifying UPC.

Hence, expiry date and UPC code will be now automatically verified, instead of manually entering, thereby eliminating rejections.

Besides UPC code, several other relevant information would be also sent to the MNP Clearinghouse automatically, thereby automating the whole process.
TRAI said, “The draft amendment also propose to make provision to transmit the relevant information viz. date of the bill, amount outstanding, last date of payment, date of the notice and period of notice given to the subscriber by Donor Operator through the MNP Clearing House.”
TRAI also wants to remove the mandatory lock-in period of 90 days for MNP, in case a telco shuts down their services.

Users and general public are requested to send in their feedbacks at advmn@trai.gov.in with a copy to trai.mn@gmail.com on/before August 31, 2017, related to the MNP reformation proposal by TRAI.
