It is a question that I get asked a lot. The setting is usually family dinners, usually by uncles and aunties and other members of the genus oldfashionedica, species inquisitivica. Innocuous enough, right? Just table talk, between mouthfuls of home food that loosens jaws better than beer does. Nothing to write home about…

ICC WWC 2017: Mithali Raj incident shows why women's cricket shouldn't be compared to men's game
But when the same question was put to Mithali Raj, on the cusp of the biggest cricket tournament in the female game, it wasn’t innocuous, it represented something more insidious. So Raj put a question of her own across in reply.
“Do you ask that same question to a male cricketer?”
“Do you ask them who their favourite female cricketer is?”
Raj’s retort has gained quite a bit of traction in the media. News channels have picked it up. Amitabh Bachchan has tweeted about it. Raj herself, speaking on the eve of her match against England, downplayed it and chose to focus on the cricket.
“I didn’t intend to be arrogant, it was just something that came from the heart,” she said. “I felt it’s a stage for women cricketers, it’s our forum, so the questionnaire should be around women’s cricket and not men’s cricket.”
I would love to say that this kind of question was a one off. A cursory Google search will show you that it isn’t. For a collection of the choicest questions, head over to the #CoverTheAthlete video that points out the blatant sexism in sports media in the west. Closer to home, I direct you to our very own Kapil Sharma Show.
On the 100th episode of Kapil Sharma’s show, Mithali Raj, Jhulan Goswami, Harmanpreet Kaur and Veda Krishnamurthy were invited as guests. It didn’t take long for the conversation to turn to their marriages; their cricketing achievements were conveniently sidetracked. Dance moves, possible Bollywood husbands, and sledging made the conversation though.
While Kapil isn’t exactly the gold standard of broadcasting, the fact that we have questions like the one Raj faced in 2017 underlines how far the perceptions surrounding women’s sport have to go. I could point you to a number of excellent articles on the topic: Andy Bull’s piece showing how hard women’s sport has had to fight, just to gain equal opportunity. Or Zenia D’Cunha’s article highlighting the bias we don’t even realise exists in media coverage. Personally I want to address something closer to my heart.
Direct comparisons.

One question I often asked in my career (thankfully, this one was actually about my career) was how fast I bowled. Between 105, 115 kmph I would say, and I would see the crestfallen look in most male eyes. A patronising ‘ah ok’ would usually follow. Most weren’t impressed, because they were comparing my speeds to the usual speeds found in male cricket.
I had introduced myself as medium fast, but I could see them categorising me under genus dibblyspecies dobbly.
ESPNCricinfo, the world’s leading cricket website, has Jhulan Goswami put down as a right arm medium bowler. Goswami regularly bowls in close to 120 kmph, and has even crossed that mark. That’s just a few clicks shy of Cathryn Fitzpatrick, considered the fastest ever. So how come we never call them fast bowlers, just medium pacers?
It’s because we compare female cricket directly with the men.

The same skewed view applies to scores. With 300 quickly becoming par — given a good batting wicket — in male cricket, scores of 200 and 250 in this World Cup will surely be looked down upon by some myopic viewers. But in truth, women’s cricket is steadily improving, with average run rates rising every year. In the 2013 World Cup, the average run rate crossed four an over for the first time in World Cup history, and this edition is likely to set the bar even higher. 2016 saw the highest average run rates in a calendar year ever (4.33).
So women’s cricket is pushing the envelope of its own existence. It is on the upward curve, it is a better sport than ever before if you would bother to put it up on its own pedestal, not side by side with the men.
In this world of short memory spans, we forget how in the 90’s, 250 was a winning score in male cricket. And then we neglect the head start — more like five body lengths start — that male sport has had over the centuries (if you aren’t convinced, read Bull’s article, if you haven’t already). Female cricket is evolving faster than male cricket in many ways: Women held the first ever World Cup in 1973, and they already have a Future Tours Program that provides context to bilateral ODIs, the ICC Women’s Championship.

Female cricket will always aspire to get better, and in many ways, better is more like male cricket, but that doesn’t mean we can compare them without context. Tennis has gone some way in recognizing the differences, without degrading them. Would you flay Serena Williams for serving 25 kmph less than Roger Federer? No. And yet all Grand Slams now offer equal prize money.
Perhaps hardcore feminists out there will not like my take on the issue. But for me, feminism in sport is more nuanced than absolute equality. We can have equality while acknowledging and celebrating differences. Different, yet equal. Athletes of each gender need to be appreciated separately for pushing the limits, even when those limits are not the same.
So when Shabnim Ismail and Katherine Brunt, and our very own Goswami run up to bowl in this World Cup, I hope the media, broadcasters, commentators and even viewers will call them right arm fast, not right arm fast medium. And if Raj and Co. chase more than 245, which is the current record high for India, let’s stand up and acknowledge it, the way we did when Yuvraj Singh and Mohammad Kaif chased 325 in this country.
It’s 2017, and we finally have a standalone female superhero movie. The World Cup showcases the superheroes of the female cricket. Let’s not blight our own eyes by comparing them to the men.

ICC 2017 Women's Cricket World Cup Begins: Hit Those Big Shots With Today's Google Doodle

After the end of the ICC Chamapions Trophy that saw Pakistan take home the Champions Trophy, It's now time for the ICC Women's World Cup. Google celebrated the opening day of the cup with its live doodle. You can try your hand with the bat as the doodle allows you to play a game of cricket yourself.

Cricket is one game that is watched worldwide. Score those big runs through the whimsical doodle game of cricket. Get those cheers as you swing your bat into the crowd for those shots.

Try your hand at Google doodle's pest cricket as they go up against their arch-rivals, the snails. The doodle lets you challenge other to a game with the option to share your scores with them.

Don't worry about slow mobile network, as the doodle is assured to
work on any snail paced speed keeping the file size, fly-sized.

The  2017 ICC Women's World Cup held in England and Whales will have eight teams up against each other. Teams include Australia, England, South Africa, India, West Indies, New Zealand, Sri Lanka and Pakistan. The opening match at Bristol Country Ground will be between the New Zealand Women team and the Sri Lankan Women team.

The Women's Cricket World Cup takes to fields across England this weekend, looking to bowl over youngsters and women, not to mention businesses, with their event.

Women's cricket makes 2017 World Cup declaration of intent
As well as seeking to encourage more girls and boys to take up the sport, organisers also want more females to follow cricket, while convincing young sportswomen there is a worthwhile career for them in the game.
Ironically, for what is the most financially lucrative women's world cup to date, making huge amounts of money from the event is not the main priority.
And there is a lot of cash around the eight-team tournament - with record prize money of $2m (£1.57m), healthy ticket sales, and big name International Cricket Council (ICC) global sponsors such as Nissan, Emirates, Hublot and Moneygram backing the event.
Rather, it is hoped that the money being spent now on the 28-day, 31-match, tournament, will be a catalyst that piques the interest of potential commercial sponsors in both the UK and elsewhere.

'Looking for relevance'

"What strikes me is that we have been presented with this huge potential for growth in so many areas, sporting and financial," Clare Connor, head of England Women's Cricket and a former national team captain, tells me.
"We have got a sport, cricket, that is looking for relevance. People are asking 'how can we help take cricket into a new era?'
"One way is to engage with young women and girls. We have to maximise these opportunities during the World Cup."
Ms Connor, who is also chair of the women's committee at cricket's governing body the ICC, said that irrespective of who wins, the world cup offers a chance to grow the sport in lots of creative ways.

Soft ball programme

One way is through the ECB's All Stars Cricket, aimed at providing children aged five to eight with a memorable first experience of the sport. The nationwide entry-level participation programme aims to get 50,000 girls and boys - and their families - excited by the game over the summer.
"We also have a soft ball initiative specifically for women." says Ms Connor, with a number of festivals being held during the World Cup.
As well as boosting participation, getting more women to follow women's cricket is a major goal.
"At the moment it is a fallacy to think women watch women's cricket. More males than females are cricket fans," the 40-year-old says.
"Cricket is not currently as relevant to women as it is to men, but the World Cup gives us an opportunity to change that."
She said that the majority of tickets, some 80%, had been sold to fans of England Cricket, and that she expected a high majority of them to be to men.

'Altered audiences'

"But work by our marketing team does show there is a growing interest in watching by women," she adds. "That is why a lot of our marketing of the All Stars children's programme is targeted at mums, we are looking to engage them in the whole experience."
She said a new city-based eight-team Twenty20 tournament, due to start in 2020,was the ideal way to attract a new female audience.
Women's cricket makes 2017 World Cup declaration of intent
"We have been looking at Australia and the Women's Big Bash, where 50% of spectators are women. They have totally altered the make up of their audience, and that is something we would look to emulate."
The tournament was brought forward so more matches sat in school term time. Just less than half of the matches are taking place on weekdays which presents an opportunity for local schools to witness tournament action live.
Meanwhile, Ms Connor says tickets for World Cup games have been priced to allow an affordable family day out. England's opening game against India is sold out, and 15,000 tickets have been sold for the final at Lord's.
The 25-year-old is the daughter of Ian Shrubsole, a former Minor Counties cricketer in the 1990s. At 13 she was the first girl to join the Somerset Academy.
"I remember from the age of three or four my dad playing, and going out onto the pitch at the interval, throwing a ball around. That is my first memory of cricket. I then really got into it when I was at school.
"Back then, when I was growing up and coming through as a player there was an element of financial reward, but not enough to live off it. The money you received wasn't enough, you couldn't have afforded a mortgage.
"However, that wasn't something that was a real issue for me, I wanted to be as good as I could be.
"But I graduated at the same time that cricket turned professional. So I have never had the worry of trying to find a job alongside playing cricket.
"In means that in terms of staying in cricket, it is now a viable career option for young women whereas previously it wasn't. You make a living out of women's cricket, like you can with women's football. Before that you would have needed a separate job alongside.
"It is an immense honour to represent your country, One of the strengths of women's sport is that they are playing for the real love of the game.
"I think we are role models for youngsters. I am guilty sometimes of not thinking that I am, but anyone who plays international sport is a role model.
"The game is still in quite a developmental stage, and I am hopeful we will have a young audience growing up alongside the sport."

'Challenger sport'

On ticket pricing, the ICC worked with a specialist agency to look at various ticket prices both at the venues (so including men's and women's cricket domestic and international), cricket as a whole, and also looked at other women's sports events in this country.
"We are not going to make a great deal of money out of it," says Ms Connor.
But she adds: "We are hoping that eventually the event becomes a commercial money spinner.
"For example, we hope that companies see there is an opportunity there to get involved in women's cricket, like Kia did a few years ago, when they became the official car of the England women's team.
"They saw the women's game as a real area of growth. As a challenger brand they were keen to work with women's cricket which they saw as a challenger sport."

'Transformed'

Other positives for the women's game are the widespread media coverage being given to the World Cup. In addition to the scheduled 10 fixtures to be broadcast live on TV, the remaining 21 World Cup matches will be streamed live.
There will be radio commentary and video highlights on BBC radio and sport website.
Meanwhile, the ICC has committed to equal prize money for women and men's cricket by 2032.
"There will be a strategic plan to ensure that the game can deliver equal prize money in 15 years time," says Ms Connor.
"The women's game has only been under the ICC's auspices since 2005. If you think of the developments since then, it is a sport transformed. The World Cup will continue that transformation."

  • Opener Lauren Winfield misses match with wrist injury
  • Captain Heather Knight’s side ‘are in a good place’ before game at DerbyshireEngland and India ready for battle in Women's World Cup opener

The England captain, Heather Knight, jumped on a train from London to Derby on Friday morning. The India captain, Mithali Raj, made the same trip late on Thursday evening after an ICC event involving all eight World Cup captains hosted at Whitehall – the last of numerous ambassadorial duties the players have had to participate in – fittingly dragged on. Finally, we are getting some cricket.
England and India open the tournament on Saturday at Derbyshire’s County Ground: an impressive new press box and a few licks of ICC official branding sprucing up a ground that expects over 3,000 supporters. Just after midday on Friday, Knight was out in the middle inspecting a pitch expected to play well. She had selection matters on her mind.
The opening bat Lauren Winfield was ruled out with an injury to her right wrist sustained during the final warm-up fixture against New Zealand on Wednesday. She is also a doubt for the second match against Pakistan, which takes place on Tuesday in Leicester. She is set for a scan and in the meantime is wearing a protective cast.
Winfield’s injury is a huge blow on the eve of a home World Cup. Given a sustained go as opener from the start of last summer against Pakistan, she scored 439 runs in 10 innings that spanned tours away to West Indies and Sri Lanka.
Her absence also splits a young, dynamic opening partnership with Tammy Beaumont. The pair spent years together defacing the record books at Lough borough University and were starting to do the same at international level. In the second ODI against Pakistan last summer, they both scored maiden centuries on their way to setting a record opening stand of 235. It was also the sixth highest for any ODI wicket.
Mark Robinson, the England coach, confirmed Winfield’s replacement has been informed she will be opening. Those outside the squad will find out at the toss. They are not short of options: Knight and Sarah Taylor have opened, while the less established duo of Georgia Elwiss and Fran Wilson are perfectly capable against the new ball.
None of these worries change anything for Knight. She welcomes the pressure of being hosts, determined to make good on a year’s worth of graft since a disappointing World T20.
“As a team we have really tried to embrace that it is a home World Cup,” she said. “We know that brings added pressure but we are in a good place to deal with that. Having the crowd on our side will be a nice feeling but obviously there are a lot of India fans in England. That’ll make for an interesting day.”
As for Raj, she was optimistic and defiant in equal measure. By her approximations, this World Cup makes it “between eight or 10” trips to England in a career that started on these shores. Since an ODI debut against Ireland, she has become a commanding presence as a churner of runs – 5,781 in ODIs, taking in five centuries and 46 fifties – and a mainstay of women’s cricket, globally and at home.
At the ICC dinner, she put a journalist in his place when he asked: “Who is your favourite cricketer from the men’s cricket teams of India and Pakistan?” After a moment of silence, Raj responded: “Do you ask the same question to a male cricketer?” Raj began. “Do you ask them who their favourite female cricketer is?”
She used the press conference on the eve of the opening World Cup fixture to clarify her remarks. Impressively, she did not dilute the message.
“I didn’t intend to be rude,” she said. “It just came straight from my heart. This is a stage for women’s cricket – it’s the women’s cricket World Cup. So, why would you not give a women player more importance? This is our stage. Our platform. Why do you have to talk about men’s cricket? I just put it that way. That’s what I meant.”
“Look – I’m sure everybody has their favourite cricketer. There’s nothing wrong in that. It just came out. It was very spontaneous.”
Not a ball has been bowled and already the women are playing some expansive shots.

Live Score, India (IND) vs (WI) West Indies: India Face Caribbean Hurdle

Live cricket score and ball-by-ball commentary from the 1st ODI match between India (IND) and (WI) West Indies at the Queen's Park Oval, Port of Spain, Trinidad on Friday.

Captain Virat Kohli will look to put to rest, all the off-field controversies regarding Anil Kumble's controversial exit, as India gear up for the first ODI against a second string West Indies, here on Friday. Ironically, it was the Caribbean Islands, where Anil Kumble's journey as the chief national coach started but within a year, the team is back without its coach. A 5-0 whitewash is something that is expected against a side that has a cumulative ODI experience of 213 matches between 13 players with skipper Holder as the most-capped player with 58 matches to his name.
For India, this series is also an ideal platform to test the team's bench strength. With Jasprit Bumrah being rested for the series, it will be an ideal opportunity for the captain to check out Mohammed Shami, who did not get a game during the Champions Trophy. The pacer has not played any official ODI since the 2015 World Cup semi-final post which he had multiple surgeries and played a few Test matches only. Shami will be keen to regain his place in the ODI XI and West Indies gives him a proper chance to do so.

West Indies vs India, Live Cricket Streaming:

West Indies vs India first ODI is set to begin at 9am local time, 6.30pm IST. TV and live streaming information is below.
India: TV: Ten 3, Ten 1 HD, Sony Six, Sony Six HD. Live Streaming: Sonyliv.

South Africa: TV: SuperSport Six. Live Streaming: SuperSport Live Video.

West Indies take on India in the first of the 5 ODIs at the Queen's Park Oval, Port of Spain. The hosts are coming into the fixture after a drawn series against Afghanistan. The last game was washed out and it hampered their chances of automatic qualification for the 2019 World Cup. They were aggressive with the ball and it should be interesting to see if they employ the same tactics against India. They were found wanting against the spin of Rashid Khan though and would be hoping to not repeat the mistakes against a side brimming with spinners. Kuldeep Yadav in particular could trouble quite a lot of them. The touring side will be hurting after the loss to Pakistan in the Champions Trophy final and will aim to get back to dominating sides in the 50-over format. There will be talks about Anil Kumble resigning but the Indian fans will hope that the skipper Virat Kohli ensures that it does not impact their performance. The visitors will look to fix the chinks in their armor and could also look at trying new combinations with no Rohit Sharma and Jasprit Bumrah. The series may not mean a lot to them but it is of utmost importance to the home side. Any number of wins could go a long way in helping their cause. Jason Holder and company will hope to raise their game and spring a few surprises. India start favorites but we have seen strange things happen in this funny old game of cricket. Hopefully the rains will stay away and we will have a full game.

England v South Africa: Alex Hales & Jonny Bairstow seal crushing T20 win
First Twenty20 international, Southampton:
South Africa 142-3 (20 overs): De Villiers 65*, Behardien 64*
England 143-1 (14.3 overs): Bairstow 60*, Hales 47*
England won by nine wickets
Scorecard
England responded to their Champions Trophy disappointment with a nine-wicket win against South Africa in the first of three Twenty20 internationals.
England were excellent with the ball in Southampton, restricting the Proteas to 142-3 despite a stand of 110 between AB de Villiers and Farhaan Behardien.
Jonny Bairstow made 60 not out off 35 balls and Alex Hales an unbeaten 47 to complete the chase with 5.3 overs left.
The second match of the series is in Taunton on Friday.
Victory would give England a series win to follow a 2-1 success in the one-day internationals that came before the Champions Trophy, where they were beaten in the semi-finals by Pakistan.
Four Tests against South Africa follow the T20s.

Bowlers squeeze South Africa in Southampton sun

On choosing to bat, South Africa captain De Villiers predicted that the Southampton surface could be on the slow side, but the Proteas' struggle to score was down to the skill of the home attack.
David Willey bowled JJ Smuts with the first ball of the match and the pacy Mark Wood accounted for both Reeza Hendricks and David Miller to leave the visitors 32-3.
Behardien joined De Villiers one delivery into the fifth over and, although they remained together for the rest of the innings, they struggled to accelerate to a total that would test England.
Hampshire leg-spinner Mason Crane, making his international debut, was impressive in the middle overs, squeezing with county colleague and slow left-armer Liam Dawson. Between them they conceded 41 runs from eight overs.
With the bowling backed up by some committed fielding, South Africa were restricted to three fours and four sixes after the six-over powerplay at the beginning of the innings.
Though De Villiers slog-swept two wonderful maximums at the death, he struggled for timing in his 58-ball unbeaten 65 and was outscored by Behardien, who made 64 not out from 52 balls.

England cruise the run chase

If South Africa failed to get to grips with the conditions, England made Southampton look ideal for batting and cantered the chase.
Jason Roy, dropped for the Champions Trophy semi-final after a barren run, got the hosts off to an electric start, taking three fours and a six from one Wayne Parnell over.
Though he was lbw to an unnecessary reverse sweep off Andile Phehlukwayo, Hales and Bairstow pummelled the Proteas' bowling in an unbroken stand of 98 that came in only 10.2 overs.
Hales favoured the leg side, whacking two sixes off Imran Tahir, who received some brutal treatment to concede 37 from three overs, while Bairstow crashed the ball through the off side and hit two sixes down the ground.
As England sprinted towards victory, South Africa fell apart. Behardien's drop at long-on to reprieve Hales was the chaos in microcosm.
A Bairstow ramp for four off Phehlukwayo was a perfect example of England's dominance. Two balls later, a drop-and-run for a single ended what was barely a contest.

'We were excellent' - what they said

England captain Eoin Morgan: "We were excellent. We took early wickets and they came back hard but we contained them.
"Our spinners were impressive and never let AB and Farhaan get away from us. They managed to tie down one of the best players of our generation and a very good international cricketer."
Man of the match Jonny Bairstow: "I'm trying to progress all the time and I played a few shots I didn't have a few months ago.
"The lads bowled outstandingly well. To take wickets up front is what we wanted and then our spinners tied them down."
South Africa captain AB de Villiers: "It is difficult to sum up the performance. The result doesn't look good for us.
"We lost our way at the start, had to rebuild and we were 20 to 30 runs short in the end, which probably cost us.
"I can't explain why it was so difficult to hit through the line - maybe they got the better of the conditions."
