WhatsApp to roll out Picture-in-Picture feature for desktop users; find out how it works

After finally introducing the Picture-in-Picture feature for Android users in India, WhatsApp is all set to roll out the feature for WhatsApp Web as well. This feature has been in testing mode for Android since October and until now, it was in the beta stage. The Picture-in-Picture feature on WhatsApp was only available for the iPhone users since the beginning of this year.

According to media reports, the Facebook-owned messaging app is rolling out PiP mode in phases for WhatsApp Web users globally with the latest version 0.3.1846. The users do not have to install the update manually, instead, the PiP mode would be automatically updated once the update is available.

This feature will make multitasking easier with your smartphone as well as with your desktop/ laptop. The WhatsApp PiP feature allows the users to message other users while watching YouTube videos and using other apps in the phone. Until now, a user could not message on WhatsApp and watch YouTube at the same time, but now PiP will help the users to operate multiple features on the single screen at the simultaneously.

How to get PiP feature for your desktop:

  • Update your WhatsApp web to version 0.3.1846.
  • Once the update is done, the users need to navigate to any chat where he/she have received any link of video.
  • The user will find a video card with a blurred thumbnail image along with the platform logo. They have to tap on that.
  • Once tapped, the video would be played on the top half of the WhatsApp chat window.
  • An option of watching the video in full-screen would also be available.
Notably, once the user exits the WhatsApp Web, the video will stop playing.

How PiP works on smartphones

The PiP feature which was only available for Android users in beta has now been rolled out to all Android users via the WhatsApp version 2.18.380. With the help of this feature, a user will be able to watch YouTube videos or scroll through Facebook and other apps in a small window that would appear in a corner of the phone's screen keeping the WhatsApp chat at the background. As per the convenience, the user will be able to adjust the placement of the small window on the screen.

To get this feature on smartphone, the Android users will have to update their WhatsApp to the latest version via Google Play store. Users will automatically enjoy the feature after updating the app.

The sources added that Facebook is far from releasing the coin, because it is still working on the strategy, including a plan for custody assets, or regular currencies that would be held to protect the value of the stablecoin.

WhatsApp will soon allow money transfer using cryptocurrency - 5 WhatsApp features introduced in 2018 that made life easy

5 WhatsApp features introduced in 2018 that made life easy!

The year is about to end and it is time to look back at everything that happened over the last 12 months. For WhatsApp, 2018 was certainly an eventful year as the Facebook-owned messaging platform introduced a number of new features to enhance user experience even as it faced continuous criticism for being unable to stop the spread of fake news. India is currently the biggest market for the company with about 220 million active users and it left no stone unturned to reach out to them in the best way possible including the roll out of a special Diwali Stickers pack

Here are five features introduced by WhatsApp in 2018 that made life easy:

WhatsApp will soon allow money transfer using cryptocurrency - 5 WhatsApp features introduced in 2018 that made life easy

1. Picture-in-Picture mode

The PiP feature allows users to watch Facebook, Instagram, or YouTube videos in a small window from the chat window itself. The feature was rolled out for the iOS devices in January this year and was made available to Android users in December. The feature only supports video link from the above-mentioned platforms only.

2. Forward label

In a bid to stop the spread of fake news on the platform, WhatsApp introduced the forward label which appears next to any message that has been forwarded by the users. The step was taken to stop the spread of misinformation but it is still unclear if it has made an impact.

3. Features for group chats

WhatsApp Groups received many new features in 2018 that gave more control to admins and creators. The platform allowed admins to add description to groups. The group creators were given the option of dismissing group admins using the “Dismiss As Admin” option.

4. WhatsApp Stickers

The feature that made the strong buzz in 2018 was Stickers. WhatsApp finally introduced Stickers on its platform in October, after months of speculation. Initially, the app gave users access to a few stickers and added support to download more company's Stickers Store.

5. Group calls

Another big feature introduced in 2018 was Group calling - both video and audio. The feature arrived on the platform in August after being tested for a month. The group calling feature allows up to four people to talk at one time.

Wow! WhatsApp will soon allow money transfer using cryptocurrency - What Facebook is working on

Facebook Inc. is reportedly working on a cryptocurrency for WhatsApp which will allow the users of the messaging platform to transfer money. This comes months after it was reported that the social media giant wants to launch its own cryptocurrency. A Bloomberg report quoted people familiar with the matter saying that the company is focusing first on the remittances market in India. Facebook is believed to be developing a StableCoin which is a type of digital currency pegged to the U.S. dollar - to minimize volatility.

The sources added that Facebook is far from releasing the coin, because it is still working on the strategy, including a plan for custody assets, or regular currencies that would be held to protect the value of the stablecoin. Earlier this year in May, it was reported that Facebook has been working on the idea for about a year now and is very serious about it.

A Cheddar website had reported that, Facebook started studying blockchain almost a year ago, when a member of its corporate development team, Morgan Beller, began looking at how the social platform could use the emerging technology. Beller was the only Facebook employee devoted to studying blockchain, the digital and decentralized ledger that underpins cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin and Ethereum.

Reportedly, Beller’s work was thrust into the spotlight this week when Facebook announced that the vice president in charge of the Messenger app, David Marcus, would lead a new team to “explore how to best leverage blockchain across Facebook, starting from scratch.”

Considering Facebook is looking to use cryptocurrency for allowing users to transfer money on WhatsApp, this reminds that the company is already is in process of releasing its own payment option on this messaging app

NCPI, the umbrella body for all digital payments in the country allowed social media-giant WhatsApp to roll out a beta testing of their payment services.

Almost 1 million people are testing WhatsApp Payment services and not only the company is further working with government and multiple banks in even enhancing the feature to more users. This WhatsApp payment service is expected to be launched soon in India which will compete against most digital payment app Paytm.

When and how will Facebook launch its own cryptocurrency and make it available to transfer money via WhatsApp will be keenly watched. It is noteworthy that, once the WhatsApp payment app kick starts in India, there can be possibility soon for the cryptocurrency development. How these two key factors of Facebook goes hand in hand will be keenly watched.

Facebook-owned WhatsApp has become a hotbed for spreading misinformation, hate messages and even running organised crime in India. While WhatsApp has surely helped internet users globally to communicate easily, in India, WhatsApp groups have played a key role in spreading misinformation with the intention to incite violence. With WhatsApp claiming to be a complete end-to-end encrypted chatting platform, what very few people know is that WhatsApp collects metadata about every user which the company can share with law enforcement agencies when demanded. While the messages are encrypted, if the police wants then they can get your name, IP address, mobile number, location, mobile network and your mobile handset type. The police can also get to know with whom you are chatting, for how long and at what time. Also, the police can access your contacts as well. While there are no separate laws for WhatsApp users in the country, the police can arrest you with the support of WhatsApp if you do any of the following under the Information Technology Act, 2000.

Most of us have WhatsApp and Facebook installed on our phone and in case of loss or theft of the phone, one should swiftly take necessary action to avoid any misuse of your WhatsApp account. Lost your SIM or phone? Use this simple trick to recover your WhatsApp account

Here's what you should do:

If your phone is lost, you should immediately get your SIM blocked by calling the telecom service provider. You can either do it by using someone else's phone or visiting the nearest outlet of the service provider. You should carry all the necessary identification documents.

Getting your SIM blocked doesn't mean that your WhatsApp has been blocked. WhatsApp can be operated even when the number is blocked.

The next step is to get a new SIM with the same number. For this, you will have to prove your identity by using IDs like Voter ID, Passport or Aadhaar.

Once you have the new SIM card, you need to activate your WhatsApp on another device. Since WhatsApp cannot be used simultaneously on two devices, it will log you off from the stolen device. Thereafter, you will be able to use your WhatsApp from the new device.

If you have your other social media apps like Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter login into your stolen device, you must change your password.

A recent photo API bug revealed that the Facebook app gave away more than 68 lakh photos of up to 5.6 million users to app developers. To our surprise, these are the photos which were never uploaded to Facebook.

The social media platform leaked pictures which were not even shared.

The API bug got access to hidden timeline photos, Facebook Stories, Marketplace photos, and most importantly, the photos on your smartphone which were never shared.

68 Lakh Private Facebook Photos Leaked - 5 Times Facebook Terribly Failed Us With Data Privacy

68 Lakh Private Facebook Photos Leaked - 5 Times Facebook Terribly Failed Us With Data Privacy
68 Lakh Private Facebook Photos Leaked - 5 Times Facebook Terribly Failed Us With Data Privacy

So, What Happened?

As the company said, it recently got to know that an API bug ran for 12 days in September. Some of the developers got access to hidden photos to as many as 5.6 million users. Third party apps had access to these photos with permission granted by Facebook between September 13 and 25.

As per the reports, Facebook will soon start sending notifications to affected users.

The company will also send out tools to the app developers soon to check if they have any photos they shouldn’t have and could delete them.

Facebook will also notify suspects, if they have used any apps impacted by the bug. Currently the social media platform is recommending users to log into the apps to check if any third party app has wrongful access to your photos.

68 Lakh Private Facebook Photos Leaked: Who Will Be Held Accountable?

Facebook is again sorry for what it did and will start investigating the matter. They have again stayed quiet about another data breach, and will be at risk of GDPR fines for not promptly disclosing the issue within 72 hours.

Facebook maybe fined up to 20 million pounds or 4 percent of annual global revenue for the incident.

It’s a major data breach, and Facebook knew about it since September, as per a TechCrush report.

The company has been on the radar for its data protection practices in the recent months. Since the Cambridge Analytica incident, Facebook has been under the scanner for its poor handling of user data.

Third Party Apps Had Access To Pictures Which Were Never Shared

When you grant access to a third party app via Facebook, or login into a third party account with Facebook, the access given is limited to the information available on the Facebook account only.

Giving permission to an app to access photos on Facebook only include pictures people share on their timeline.

But this data breach included pictures of 5.6 million users which were neither shared nor posted. The leaked photos include a major portion of the unposted pictures. The bug also impacted users who uploaded pictures on Facebook but chose not to post, like if someone is uploading a picture but doesn’t finish posting it.

The affected users soon may be notified and directed to a Facebook help center. There affected users where will likely be able to see what images may have been compromised by Facebook to these third party developers.

What Should You Do?

Nothing much you have can about it until Facebook provides a list of the third party apps. Once the company releases a list, you can check which of the third party apps you use. If you find any app you use on the list, log in to the app and cancel your access to Facebook photos or may be even log out your Facebook account completely.

Also, try using Facebook from your web browser than the actual app.

The Facebook apps get access to your pictures directly. In such a case, the chances of your private photos being leaked are a lot higher. But in the case of a web browser, you are still at risk, but chances are relatively low.

Facebook’s Data Coup: 5 Times Facebook Terribly Failed Us With Data Privacy

The social media giant has continuously failed to gain user’s trust. 5 times Facebook terribly failed us with data privacy:

Cambridge Analytica

With the help of Facebook, Cambridge Analytica improperly harvested the personal data of 50 million users to target political advertisements.

Private Posts Published

A bug in June publicly published private posts of 14 million users. The glitch breached data of users which were intended to be private.

Hackers Stole Data Of 30 Million Users

Hackers got access and stole private data in September. More than 30 million users were affected and almost half of the data in the accounts were stolen.

Facebook Still Shares Data With Third Party Developers

In 2015, Facebook said it stopped access to user data to third-party app developers. But in June, WSJ found that the company still shares user data with third-party developers. Facebook officials later confirmed the report.

Collected Text Messages & Phone Calls

As part of the offer, a user will be able to enjoy download and upload speeds up to 100 Mbps along with a monthly FUP of 100GB, which is on the lower side.

However, Jio will be giving additional data to the customers in the form of ‘Data Top-Ups.’ In case, if a user consumes 100GB monthly data, they can still be able to enjoy data speeds at 100 Mbps by performing complimentary data top-ups. The best part is these data-tops will be free of cost. Each data top-up gives a user 40GB of data. Nevertheless, we’re not sure how many data top-ups will be given to each user. If the data top-ups number is unlimited, it would be an excellent option for the subscribers. Jio GigaFiber Broadband Plans Will Be Announced at a Later Date

During the AGM of RIL last month, Jio just announced the GigaFiber service but did not announce the broadband plans, which has put several users in a bothered situation. That said, the reason behind this is the JioGigaFiber Preview Offer. Every user will be automatically entitled into the preview offer, which going by Jio’s track record will be extended after three months. The Jio GigaFiber broadband plans will be revealed at a later date, that’s what we can assume for now.

Reliance Jio Aiming to Capture 50 Million Broadband Users

Jio’s ultimate goal with Jio GigaFiber is to capture 50 million broadband users and be the top broadband player in India. At the moment, the state-run telco BSNL is the leading broadband operator with over 10 million subscribers under its belt. Achieving 50 million subscribers in a no feat in the wired broadband segment as it requires a humongous workforce to get the service installed in requested citizen’s home. Jio is aiming to achieve the target with the preview offer.

Jio GigaFiber Effect: BSNL Offers 25% Cashback On Broadband Plans, Triggers Price War!

The broadband industry has hugely evolved over the last one year since Reliance Jio announced its own broadband service, Jio GigaFiber.

Its strongest competitor in the country is state-run BSNL.

The public telecom company has taken up the Jio challenge and has been continuously upgrading its plans to take on Reliance Jio upfront. BSNL has now plans available for every budget segment.

BSNL remains a prominent player in the broadband segment, and Jio GigaFiber will soon affect its business nationally.

Jio GigaFiber vs BSNL Broadband: The Changing Business

Jio GigaFiber is in its final leg, and a PAN India launch is expected to be imminent. The Mukesh Ambani led company is again expected to disrupt the segment with free introductory plans and low-priced tariffs.

In a bid to take a strong ground, BSNL will now offer 25 percent cashback on its annual broadband plans.

The move is aimed at retaining users against Reliance Jio’s aggressive pricing model and free offers.

RelianceJio GigaFiber will come with a three-month free introductory data plan, and even the offers thereafter are expected to be quite low compared to other aggregators.

How To Claim 25 Percent Cashback On BSNL Annual Plans?

The cashback offered by BSNL is different compared to the other cashback offers. Unlike other companies, who offer multiple coupons, the BSNL cashback can be used at once. You won’t have to use a single coupon for every recharge. The whole amount can be used to redeem at a single go.

The BSNL cashback is not a traditional offer, but instead it will will lower the overall bill payment.

The 25 percent cashback is only available for annual plans. So, if you calculate that, you will get free three months of broadband service from BSNL. You need to pay for 9 months, and the other three is on BSNL.

To know more, you can call on this toll free number: 18003451500 or visit the nearest customer service center to avail the 25 percent BSNL cashback offer.

25 Percent Cashback Offer To Retain Customers: Legit Move?

Reliance Jio will soon disrupt the segment with its dirt-cheap plans and freebies. For BSNL to offer free 3 months of broadband service to retain customers seems a legit move.

The company is a major player in the broadband space, and the cashback will attract more customers.

Also, do remember that the 25 percent BSNL cashback offer is a limited period deal. Visit your nearest customer service centre immediately to avail the offer. The 25 percent BSNL cashback offer will also help BSNL to stay competitive against its rivals Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel and Vodafone.

Reliance Jio GigaFiber Launch: All We Know So Far

Reliance Jio GigaFiber was being expected to be rolled out by the end of 2018, but the company is still working on its final part. The commercial roll out may happen in early 2019, probably by the end of the first quarter. The GigaFiber pilot program is already live in select cities.

Reliance Jio GigaFiber will launch nationally in 1,100 cities across India.

The Reliance Jio GigaFiber registrations are live now, and you can sign up for a request at your area. The company will also bundle its Jio GigaTV with GigaFiber under its GigaHub Home gateway.

After a long wait, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) on Thursday revamped the Mobile Number Portability (MNP) rules. As per the new regulations, a customer can now port out from one network to another in just two days. Trai made the entire process faster and simpler and prescribed two days timeline for port out requests within a service area. Similarly, a timeline of four working days has been prescribed for requests for port out from one circle to other. The latest amendments to the Telecommunication Mobile Number Portability regulations form part of the regulator’s “continuous endeavour” to make the process more “subscriber-friendly”, according to a statement by the telecom regulator.

Telcos to Face Fine Up to Rs 10,000 for Wrongful Port Rejection

Each “wrongful rejection” of the request for porting will attract a penalty of up to Rs 10,000. “… porting timeline of two working days has been provisioned for the requests of Intra-Licensed Service Area (Intra-LSA) numbers except the requests made under corporate category and the timelines of four working days has been provisioned for all the porting requests of Inter-Licensed Service Area (Inter-LSA) numbers and corporate category,” Trai said.

Besides this, other major changes have been incorporated such as the validity of the Unique Porting Code or UPC has been brought down to four days instead of a fortnight prescribed earlier, for all circles except Jammu & Kashmir, Assam and North East, where the validity of the said code remains unchanged, it said.

“Process for withdrawal of porting requests has been made simpler and quicker through SMS (text message). For the cases of corporate porting, present limit of 50 numbers in single authorisation letter has been enhanced to 100 numbers per authorisation letter. Provisions for the financial disincentives have been broadened upon contravention of the provisions of MNP Regulations,” the regulator said.

Trai to Monitor Service Providers in the Case of MNP

Following the implementation of the latest regulation, suitable service quality parameters will be devised by Trai to monitor the role of MNP service providers and access providers in the new scenario, the statement said.

In recent times, we have seen a lot of small telcos such as Aircel, RCom and Tata Docomo shutting the wireless business in the country. In Chennai telecom circle, Aircel has the strong foothold followed by other telcos. Earlier this year, BSNL urged that customers in Chennai circle are facing some issues as Aircel is denying them to port out to the state-run telco, and the matter even reached Trai.

To recall, as per the existing MNP norms, a number can be ported from one network to another within seven days. Having said that, MNP process was never as swift as it sounds as several customers often face the absence of network issues even after the port out.

Google launched the Pixel 3 series of phones aka the Pixel 3 and the Pixel 3 XL just a couple of months ago. Looks like, the search giant is in no mood to stop just here anytime soon. Rumours have been making rounds on the internet for a long time stating that Google is working on affordable Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL models. Both the phones appear in two colours – white and black – just like the Pixel 3 and the Pixel 3 XL. The renders, as well as the video, shows the phones from all angles.

As far as the overall design of the phones is concerned, both the Pixel 3 Lite and Pixel 3 Lite XL will boast the same design language as the Pixel 3. But, unlike the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL – that have all glass design – the Pixel 3 Lite and Pixel 3 Lite XL will be made of polycarbonate, which makes sense considering the price of the upcoming Pixel phones are going to be much lower than the existing ones. These renders were obtained by 91mobiles.

Pixel 3 Lite, Pixel 3 Lite XL Renders and Video Leak

As already noted, both the Pixel 3 Lite and Pixel 3 Lite XL will have the similar design language as the Pixel 3. Not just that similar to the existing Pixels, the upcoming ones will also come in two colours – white and black. Similar to the Pixel 3, the Pixel 3 Lite and Pixel 3 Lite XL will have no notch on the front, unlike the Pixel 3 XL. The renders further show the phones with quite thick bezels on the sides compared to the Pixel 3. On the rear panel, both the Pixel 3 Lite and Pixel 3 Lite XL will include a single camera sensor on both front and back.

The placement of the camera on both sides will yet again be similar to the Pixel. On the rear panel, following the rear panel camera will be the circular shaped fingerprint sensor. Right below the sensor, there will be the Google brand logo similar to all Pixel phones. One of the most noticeable differences between the upcoming Pixel phones and the existing Pixel 3 is the polycarbonate back. The Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL are made of all glass body, but that will not be the case for the Pixel 3 Lite and Pixel 3 Lite XL. This makes sensor considering Google is planning to target the budget segment users with the upcoming Pixels.

Google Pixel 3 Lite and Pixel 3 Lite XL: Release Date

As of now, it’s unknown when Google is planning to launch these smartphones. In the past, a report hinted that the phones would see the light sometime in early 2019, and India will be one of the first markets to get them.

Being a long time mobile users, now maximum people on the planet are acquainted with the fact that before going for a recharge one should and must check out the validity of that particular plan. Otherwise, the user can be a victim of rumors and advertisements that are being shown on Television.

Because, very rare educated and literate people are taking care of the thing that – somewhere in the corner, companies at the time of producing their advertisement write something like this – “T & C Applied” that precisely means Terms and Conditions apply. Now, this clearly means in the greed of an offer, you can harm yourself if not gone through the Terms and Conditions.

In the same way, while going for a recharge, it is quite mandatory to check the validity. What actually happens is that when a user recharges for X amount say like Rs. 10, Rs. 20, Rs. 50 or Rs. 100 or any other amount, then the mobile network operator puts a validity period for that particular amount to expire.

Undoubtedly, this is something which is quite beneficial for the company. Because, after the validity period is expired, the user will have to recharge again. After which, the recharged amount cannot be used for Incoming or Outcoming calls. Now, this is something that happens all over the work irrespective of which mobile network operator it is.

The list of the top mobile operators include – Sprint Corporation, PLDT, Globe Telecom, Hamrahe Aval, MegaFon, TIM, Axiata, MTS, 3, BSNL, Ooredoo, AT&T Mobility, Verizon Wireless, Etisalat, STC, Deutsche Telekom, Telenor, Telkomsel, Orange, MTN Group, Veon, Reliance Jio, Telefonica, America Movil, China Telecom, China Unicom, Vodafone, Vodafone Idea Limited, Airtel and China Mobile etc.

Now here’s the most important part. That is, How To Extend Outgoing Validity In Airtel, Idea, Vodafone, BSNL? Mainly, primary point you must be focussed on is that – while going for a recharge just never ever forget to go through the validity period before paying the amount.

Few plans are there for one day, 10 days, 30 days and more. If you rarely make an outgoing call, then we advise you to go through the unlimited validity. In which even you Rs. 10 recharge will possibly have a lifetime validity. Apart from that, tricks for various operators are different. Like USSD Codes for increasing the lifetime, validity is different for BSNL, Airtel, Jio and other mobile network operators.

Another crucial part is “Best Offers!” Yes, you must stay tuned with top tech channels, recharge groups on Facebook, WhatsApp and Telegram etc. Also, top tech websites and mobile network operators official websites keep you updated with the latest offers for that SIM.

Like, if you’ve mistakenly recharged for Rs. 100 but forgot to check the validity at the time of recharging. Later you came to know that recharge duration is just for 10 days. Now, it mainly depends on your luck, that if the mobile network operator has some offers in hand with which Validity can be increased, then it’s obviously a good news for you.

BSNL Revives ‘Bumper Offer’ Till January End

Reportedly, BSNL had earlier rolled out the ‘Monsoon Offer’ which was essentially the same offer as the current one. As per the telco’s announcement, the offer was to be valid until September 14. However, the telco had resumed the benefits of the offer and extended the date to November 14, 2018. Following this move, and seeing more response from its subscribers, BSNL had yet again decided to extend the validity of this ‘Bumper Offer’ thus pleasing its subscribers once again. This time, BSNL had announced that the validity extension has been put off till January 31, 2019, meaning that BSNL users will be able to reap benefits of this offer until the end of January next year.

BSNL also clarified that the 2.1GB data being offered under this plan wouldn’t only be the replacement to their existing data plan but instead, it would provide additional 2.1GB of data besides their usual data benefit. So if a subscriber has subscribed to a plan with 1GB daily data benefit, then owing to this offer, the user will be able to get 3.1GB of data per day.

Two Long-Term STVs to Now Pair with Bumper Offer

When BSNL had first rolled out the Bumper Offer in September, the offer was valid with subscriptions of Rs 186, Rs 429, Rs 485, Rs 666 and Rs 999 plans. The offer was also valid over STVs like Rs 187, Rs 333, Rs 349, Rs 444 and Rs 448. Adding on to this list, now BSNL is also granting the benefits of this offer over two high values plans as well.

As noted, BSNL is now providing the Bumper Offer benefits on STV 1699 and STV 2099. Both of these recharges by BSNL come with a long validity of 365 days and the STV-1699 ships 2GB data per day while the STV 2099 offers double the benefit with 4GB of data per day. Also, it’s worth noting that BSNL subscribers will get 11MB extra data credited to their accounts because the actual benefit of this offer has been reported to be 2.21GB.

Google brings Smart Reply to Hangouts Chat

Google is incorporating its Smart Reply feature into Hangouts Chat, giving users up to three reply options that they can quickly select, edit and send. The company said the feature is backed by machine learning similar to what's behind Gmail's Smart Reply, adding that the move is part of its larger effort to bring these sorts of tools to all of G Suite. Google announced earlier this year that it planned to bring the feature to more chat apps.

Smart Reply is rolling out to Hangouts Chat users over the next couple of days. It's currently only available in English.

Walmart announced that it is planning to acquire Art.com, a major online retailer of art and wall decor. The art seller will continue to operate as a standalone online storefront, but some of the platform's more than two million products will be available through Walmart.com, Jet and Hayneedle. Walmart hasn't said if it will carry Art.com products in its physical stores.

The purchase is expected to be completed in early 2019, though no price was given. In addition to the company's products, Walmart is also getting its hands on Art.com's ArtView platform that allows shoppers to see what a product will look like in their home. The technology may be used so shoppers can preview other Walmart products as well. Walmart currently offers virtual looks at curated apartments, while retailers like Target and Ikea have full augmented reality offerings.

The purchase of Art.com marks a continuation of Walmart's online retailer spending spree. Since spending $3 billion to acquire Jet.com in 2016, Walmart has scooped up a number of smaller e-commerce companies including women's clothing shop ModCloth, men's clothing outlet Bonobos, outdoor gear seller Moosejaw, footwear retailer ShoeBuy and home furnishing company Hayneedle.

Airport shopping is mostly about perfumes, booze and overpriced electronics, but that could soon change. Amazon has reportedly inquired about installing its cashierless Go stores at several US airports, according to Reuters. Emails from a public records request revealed that Amazon asked for meetings with managers at San Jose and Los Angeles international airports and received a positive response. "I am looking forward to moving forward with the Amazon Go technology at the airport," wrote one airport IT manager.

An unnamed source said that Amazon was trying to figure out how to get into airports and assigned a business development employee to the task. Officials said that Amazon would have to go through the same competitive bid process as any company to become a concessionaire, however.

It's not clear how profitable Amazon Go could be at airports. Employees would need security clearances, and retail space tends to be at a premium. What's more, airports are often publicly run, so all of the terms and conditions would be publicly available -- something that Amazon may not be crazy about.

Even if Go stores ran at a loss, however, it could be well worth it for Amazon. "It would gain an opportunity to expose Go to travelers that might otherwise never experience it," one anonymous individual told Reuters. "You'll be able to build broad awareness just being in a dozen of the best airports."

It could also be a boon for travelers: No matter how you might feel about Jeff Bezos' company, it does tend to have a broader selection and better prices than most stores. You'd probably be looking at food and electronics rather than Hermes cologne or Crozes Hermitage wine, however.
