Back in February, we showed you images of the new Peugeot 508 sedan. Shaking off nearly two decades of fugly design tradition, the 508 is a handsome, well-proportioned car from a car company that once upon a time was actually known for making handsome, well-proportioned cars. As opposed to things that look like this. Well, you seemed to like the new 508 sedan, so here are images of its new wagon buddy: the 2019 Peugeot 508 SW wagon. Honestly, there's not much to report here beyond the fact it adds a rakish wagon tail and a huge heap of cargo space to the sedan.
Another cool wagon we can't have: French Edition
How huge? Its 1,780 liters of maximum cargo space, as Google informs me, is 62.9 cubic feet or basically on-par with most luxury compact SUVs. It's smaller than a Subaru Outback or Buick Regal TourX, but bigger than the Audi Allroad. One of the car's unique attributes is its frameless doors, which is really only something you'll find on coupes and old Subarus. Besides being cool, they allow for easier access under the new 508's low roofline.
As for engines, there are six, and I'm only going to mention them because they're named like internet shopping promo codes. Your gasoline options, the 180 S&S EAT8 and 225 S&S EAT8, are 1.6-liter engines, while the four available 1.5- and 2.0-liter diesel engines are the 130 S&S BVM6, 130 S&S EAT8, 160 S&S EAT8 and 180 S&S EAT8. Peugeot's press release seemed to think I should know what that gibberish means, mais, je ne comprends pas. It has been reported that Peugeot's parent company, PSA, has been planning a comeback to the United States, but we wouldn't count on the 508 SW showing up here. Besides the chances of Peugeot as a brand being the chosen entry into the American market being slim, even slimmer are the chances of a wagon making it over, especially since this 508 SW will likely be due for replacement by the time any potential French invasion happens.

The Kia Niro EV has been introduced at the Busan International Motor Show. The manufacturer says its fully electric Niro compact crossover will go on sale in its home market this year, with global sales starting later. Kia already showed the production Niro EV last month, but at that point no power figures were announced. We know them now, and the 204-horsepower rating, together with a 291 pound-foot figure, match the Hyundai Kona EV. Under the trunk floor is a 64-kWh lithium polymer battery pack, which according to Kia is good for 236 miles on a single charge. A 100kW fast charger will get the battery to 80 percent capacity in 54 minutes. There's also a smaller battery pack available with a 149-mile range from 39.2 kWh.
Kia Niro EV revealed in Korea
This presumably comes with a cheaper purchase price. Also revealed is the Niro EV interior, which features a different center console and gear selector than the hybrid and plug-in hybrid (much as the Hyundai Ioniq Electric does compared to its part-gasoline siblings). Also different is the special LCD instrument cluster and the 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system that gets special EV features like charge point location services and a battery pack charge indicator.
A mood lighting system is also offered, similarly to the K900 flagship sedan. There's also a driver assist suite, consisting of collision warning systems, adaptive cruise control, "Intelligent Stop & Go" and Lane Following Assist, which Kia calls a Level Two autonomous technology. Like other such systems, it uses the adaptive cruise control and lane-keeping assist systems to control the accelerator, brakes and steering when on a highway. The system functions between 0 and 80 mph.

Over the past few quarters, Chinese internet startup Xiaomi has emerged as the number one player in the Indian smartphone market. In the wake of European General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), Xiaomi has updated its privacy policy for Indian users and have added several new clauses. The latest privacy policy of Xiaomi India came into effect from May 25 onwards. Here are 10 things from Xiaomi India’s privacy policy that you must know before buying a Xiaomi phone or using its ‘Mi services’.
10 things to know before you buy any Xiaomi smartphone
1. Xiaomi collects basic personal info : According to the privacy policy, Xiaomi may collect basic personal information like name, birthday and gender. Xiaomi states that personal information may include but not limit to the information you provide to them or upload to their servers.
2. Your contact info may be collected : By using Xiaomi services which comes bundled with any Xiaomi smartphone, the user will allow Xiaomi to collect mobile phone numbers, email addresses or all other contact information that is present on the device.
3. Your bank accounts and credit details may be saved : The privacy policy clearly states that Xiaomi may collect financial information related to completing purchases made on Mi.com or other Xiaomi platforms. This means the company may collect bank account number, account holder name, credit card number and other details.
4. Your work details and where you work may be collected : Xiaomi may collect social information related to social activities which includes current employer, current job title, educational background, professional training background among others.
5. Your house address will be stored : Xiaomi may also record your home delivery address for purchases made by users on Mi.com.
6. Government ID card like passport, driver license details may be stored : Interestingly, Xiaomi’s new privacy policy states that it may collect details of user’s government ID cards like passport, driving license and others for providing services when provided by users.
7. Photos and data on Mi Cloud can be collected : Xiaomi may collect data that users may sync through Mi Cloud or other apps like photos, contact lists and other information in relation to activities on any of Xiaomi’s platforms.
8. Device or SIM-related information can be stored : Xiaomi has mentioned that it will collect information related to the users device. This means IMEI number, IMSI number, MAC address, Serial number, MIUI version and other information can be collected.
9. Your Location info may be accessed : For providing certain services, Xiaomi will collect location like country code, city code, mobile network code, mobile country code, cell identity, longitude and latitude information, time zone settings and language settings.
10. You have the option to stop sharing info with Xiaomi, but there’s a catch : To keep this data policy transparent, Xiaomi is giving the option to users to withdraw their consent for the collection, use and/or disclosure of your personal information by Xiaomi. However, this could mean that users “will not be able to enjoy Xiaomi’s products and services”.

Amazon Quietly Introduces a Lite Web Browser for Android Users in India
Amazon now has quietly launched a lite web browser app for Android devices in India. The app called “Internet:: fast, lite and private” on Google Play is visible but not necessarily downloadable depending on your device. The browser has been sitting on the Google Play app store since March and has fewer than 1,000 downloads, according to data from app store intelligence firm Sensor Tower.
The app is currently available to users located in India users only and is compatible with devices running Android 5.0 Marshmallow and above. Like most lite apps the app is designed to consume less space on the device. It comes at 2MB in size and Amazon promises it to be “lighter than the competition”. That’s surely smaller than other browsers, including Chrome (21MB), Edge (54.5MB), Firefox (19.9MB) and Opera (14.7MB).
The app itself is a typical web browser that comes with a homepage that shows general news and updates apart from cricket news for its users. The browser app also offers tab previews and enables an automatic fullscreen mode. Besides, the app supports private tabs that allow users to hide their browser history in their devices. Amazon’s Internet app also promises privacy by not collecting private data or asking for unnecessary permissions from you on your phone. Notably, the Internet Lite web browser app isn’t the only “lite” app from Amazon. The company also released Amazon Kindle Lite, a basic e-book reading app which once again comes under 2MB of file size. In addition, it is designed to work with slower data speeds and in areas with unstable data connectivity.
Similar to Amazon’s efforts, Google and Facebook have also rolled out a suite of lightweight apps for emerging markets like India. Google launched its lite apps under the Go suite of apps which include the Google Go, Google Maps, Google Assistant Go, Files Go and YouTube Go which are available on PlayStore for all to download. Facebook also offers Lite versions of its apps, like Facebook Lite and Messenger Lite, to reach users with limited connectivity and access to data.

Hero Xtreme 200R vs TVS Apache RTR 200 vs Bajaj Pulsar NS200: Price, features, specification comparison
With the entry of the new Hero Xtreme 200R, the rivalry in the 200cc streetfighter territory has spiced up. The new Hero is welcomed by challenging rivals in the segment like TVS Apache RTR 200 and Bajaj Pulsar NS200. Here's how the battle turned out to be on paper. Hero MotoCorp has unveiled its Xtreme 200R in India. The motorcycle might be late to the party but is shows the company's plans to step into the premium motorcycle segment and the Xtreme 200R can be seen as a baby step towards the same.
The 200cc streetfighter segment has seen a decent growth in the last few years, all thanks to the newcomers and the arising interest among the buyers. The entry of the new Hero Xtreme 200R to the party makes a case for a spec comparison with two of its most challenging rivals TVS Apache RTR 200 and Bajaj Pulsar NS 200. The interesting part is, all three motorcycles have been promoted to the 200cc territory after their younger avatars tasted popularity.
The TVS Apache RTR 200 is the oldest in this battle while the Bajaj Pulsar NS200 ABS version has been launched just a few months back. The KTM Duke 200 has not been included in this comparison as it is priced significantly higher than the three motorcycles here. So, here is which one of the three motorcycles takes it to the top spot and which one bites the dust.
Hero Xtreme 200R Vs TVS Apache RTR 200 Vs Bajaj Pulsar NS200 Design And Styling The latest entrant to the segment Hero Xtreme 200R is comparatively humble in terms of design when compared to the two of its rivals here. The motorcycle definitely looks bolder than its younger sibling and the integration of a monoshock at the rear offers it a substantial change. The TVS Apache RTR 200 is the brawniest of the three and it stays true to the aggressive Draken concept that was shown at Auto Expo 2014.
Thanks to the sharp lines and edges, the motorcycle looks quite futuristic and numerous people have purchased it just because of the way it looks. Last, the Bajaj Pulsar NS200 also has an aggressive styling and the sharp headlamp section upfront with twin positioning lights is one of its prime visual highlights. The motorcycle gets split step up seats that look sporty and the rear tyre hugger acts as another visual highlight.
Hero Xtreme 200R Vs TVS Apache RTR 200 Vs Bajaj Pulsar NS200 Engine Specifications
The new Hero Xtreme 200R sources its power from a 199.6cc, single cylinder, air-cooled engine mated to a five-speed transmission. The engine is good for churning out a maximum power output of 18.1 hp along with a peak torque of 17.1 Nm.
The TVS Apache RTR 200, in comparison has a 197.7cc, single cylinder, oil-cooled mill mated to a five-speed transmission as well. The mill is being offered with both, carburetor and fuel injection and latter has comparatively better outputs than the former. The carbureted engine makes for a better case in this comparo which makes out 20.23 hp of power and 18.1 Nm of torque.
Last but definitely not the least, the Bajaj Pulsar NS200 sources its power from a 199.5cc, single cylinder, liquid-cooled engine mated to a five-speed transmission system. The power and torque figures stand at 23 hp and 18.3 Nm. Hence, the Pulsar NS200 takes the lead here when it comes to engine specs.
Hero Xtreme 200R Vs TVS Apache RTR 200 Vs Bajaj Pulsar NS200: Braking, Suspension And Tyres The Hero Xtreme 200R has been assisted with 37mm telescopic forks up front along with an eight step adjustable monoshock at the rear. The TVS Apache RTR 200 gets a similar set up with KYB monoshock at the rear. The Bajaj Pulsar NS200 has a gas charged monoshock at the rear while the front set up is the same. The Hero Xtreme 200R comes assisted with a 276mm disc brake upfront along with a 220mm disc brake at the rear.
The Apache RTR 200 gets 270mm petal disc brake up front along with a 240mm petal disc at the rear. The Pulsar NS200 gets the biggest front disc at 280mm while at the rear, it has been fitted with a 230mm disc unit.
All three motorcycles get a single channel ABS (Anti-Lock Braking) for safe and effective braking. The Hero Xtreme 200R comes with 100/80-17 front and 130/70-17 rear tyres. The TVS Apache RTR 200 comes fitted with 90/90-17 front and 130/70-17 rear tyres. Lastly, the Bajaj Pulsar NS200 rides on 100/80-17 and 130/70-17 size tyres on the front and rear respectively.

This 4-cylinder 1000 cc motorcycle was built by an enthusiast with no engineering degree
Not everyone can afford 1,000 cc superbikes, what with the cheapest ones costing close to a million rupees. While most of us simply give up on our superbike dreams due to the exorbitant costs involved, one man decided that he wouldn’t. Meet Riddhesh Vyas, of Rajkot – Gujarat, who built himself a 1,000 cc, four cylinder chopper. It took him 8 long years to put his dreams into two wheeled reality, part by part. And it’s called the Ridd.
What’s the Ridd all about? The Ridd is a 1,000 cc chopper that Riddhesh built with a lot of hand-made parts. Apart from the 1,000 cc, four cylinder engine, the hydraulic systems and tyres, everything on the bike’s said to be hand-made. It’s styled to be a chopper, with kicked out front forks, a long wheelbase, a total length of about 9 feet and relaxed ergonomics. The custom ride has massive street presence, and weighs a considerable 400 Kgs. Despite not having a formal degree in engineering or design, Riddhesh pulled off this bike building feat thanks to his extensive experience in the metal working industry. The man has a metal business, and this experience allowed him to fabricate parts for the Ridd. Here’s a short video that explains how the Ridd came about. A bike nut, Riddhesh began nurturing his passion for two wheels by servicing his motorcycles by himself. This hands-on experience helped him while building the Ridd. The man also noted the best features of high end bikes, and implemented them on his custom build. Some such features are the hydraulic clutch, single side swing arm at the rear and a swing arm based suspension system for the front end. The bike can hit a top speed of about 170 Kph.
How much? Over the 8 years that it took for this project to translate from dream to reality, Riddhesh claims to have spent about 8 lakh rupees. While that’s a considerable amount of money, the sheer joy of finding your creation in the Limca book of records is priceless. Yes, this bike has made it to the record books as India’s first hand-made superbike.

Govt Planning To Sell Petrol, Diesel Online
Now here’s one government decision that all of us might be able to get behind. In its mission to give its Digital India initiative a much needed push, the government is contemplating putting petrol and diesel along with its various products on ecommerce platform.

Yes, this means, very soon you might no longer have to wait in those long, long petrol pump lines and waste your prestigious time. Just like online shopping for your clothes, electronics and grocery, you might soon be able to shop for petrol and diesel online.
Taking the podium at the recently concluded India Mobile Congress, Oil Minister Dharmendra Pradhan revealed that his ministry plans on connecting oil with IT and telecommunications soon by putting all petroleum products on e-commerce platform.
It isn’t the first time that this particular idea was conceived. Media reports suggest that the idea was first shared by Pradhan at a consultative committee meeting of Members of Parliament in Srinagar on April 21st this year.

From statistics point of view, India is currently home to around 60,000 fuel retail outlets. The size of the entire petroleum industry comes out to be around a whopping Rs 6.5 lakh crore. On an average, 40 million consumers come to these retail outlets on a daily basis. If the government is successful in offering petrol and diesel online, it will ease a lot of daily pressure from these offline retail outlets.
But, is it feasible and safe to deliver popular fuels such as petrol and diesel via the internet? Number of industry weighed in on the issue and shared their viewpoints with IANS. While majority of them think that this is a highly feasible project, but all of them did point out their concern for safe handling of the liquids.
According to Deepak Mahurkar, leader, oil and gas at PricewaterhouseCoopers India, “It is technically feasible to offer petrol on e-commerce sites and later get it delivered at doorsteps. But it has to be sealed properly and should be handled in a delicate manner. The need for emergency supplies can be met through this channel. It may become a popular product in rural areas where for miles there are no fuel pumps.”

Not only rural areas, the move is expected to gain major traction in urban areas as well as currently there are few petrol pumps in the heart of many cities and urbanisation is taking place at a jet-speed rate.
Former ONGC Chairman and Managing Director R.S.Sharma, said, “It is a technically feasible project. It can become highly commercially scaleable model. But safety is a major concern.”
“Technically it is possible. But it has to have a proper dispensing norm. It needs to stick to the norms set by the Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organisation (PESO) to meet safety. Given the way retailing space is becoming precious, e-commerce route can be an alternative route,” said Anish De, Partner, infrastructure, government and healthcare and Leader, oil and gas, at KPMG in India.

In addition to the safety concerns pertaining to the mobility and delivery of the fuels, industry experts also expressed their concerns about the price at which these fuels will be sold on the ecommerce platforms. There are concerns that a service fee might be levied as fuel will be delivered to doorsteps. On the other hand, there’s also a possibility that big players in the fuel industry might even end up cutting the price, in hunger of grabbing a larger share of the market.

Samsung Galaxy Note 8 Launched; Bigger And Better Infinity DisplayEveryone remembers what happened the last time when Samsung launched the Note 7 smartphone. Even though it got discontinued, it was universally acknowledged as one of the best smartphones of 2016. The Note series is really special for the company.
It is 2017 and Samsung is back with the latest Note phablet, the Samsung Galaxy Note 8. Though it is pretty similar to the Galaxy S8, it has its distinguishing signature features. It packs in an even larger screen in a small form-factor, thanks to the bezel-less display.
Samsung has even launched the refurbished Note 7 in a few countries with a smaller, and safer battery labelled as the ‘Fan Edition’. Even with its ‘explosive’ tendencies, the Note 7 was well-received in the market. The Note 8 is actually the result of the demand for a successor to the highly acclaimed Note 7. At the launch event in New York, Samsung announced the Galaxy Note 8 with availability from September 15 around the world. But the release date for India is still not announced. Historically, the Note devices are made available for sale in India around first or second week of October.

Samsung Galaxy Note 8: List Of Specifications

  • Fingerprint Sensor; Iris / Face Recognition; 3.5mm Headphone Jack; Bundled AKG headphones
  • Handset and S-Pen IP68 Certified Dust and Water Resistant.
  • Available in Midnight Black, Maple Gold, Orchid Grey and Deep Sea Blue Colours

The smartphone is expected to go on sale from September 15 and most market-watchers are expecting the price to be around $1,000. Technically, the only difference between Note 8 and S8+ is actually the S-Pen and the camera setup. But that has been the historical precedent.
The battery in S8+ is slightly larger while the screen size is smaller. That means it should go farther than the Note 8’s battery. While a 4K screen would have made the Note 8 stand out, there would have been no quantifiable gains other than bragging rights.
Of course Samsung has included Bixby into the Note 8. It is still in a nascent stage and has a long way to go before it can catch up to Siri or Google’s Assistant. The Note 8 incorporates even more interesting features in the S-Pen. It will be a much-anticipated phone in India despite of its premium price tag.

Are you planning to get the Note 8 for yourself? Are you satisfied with what Samsung has done with the phone? Sound off in the comments below.

Nokia 6 Is Coming! Is It Worthy Enough? Best Alternatives You Can Get Under 15,000
In less than two weeks from now, Nokia 6 will go on sale. Unsurprisingly, it has received over a million registrations on Amazon India. Nokia phones ride high on nostalgia and and remind you of the phones of yore. But is Nokia 6 worth the hype?
With a set of decent specs and an average processor, Nokia hardly offers a value-for-money device. But, it does pack in a list of interesting features, and also the first-time Android OS under the hood.
What Makes Nokia 6 Good?
When compared to other premium devices at this range, Nokia 6 has only a handful of things to offer.

Sharp Display
The 5.5 inch Full HD display is crisp with good brightness, sharp contrast and great sunlight legibility.

Premium Build
On the outside, Nokia 6 has a premium metal built (aluminium) which can be compared to some of the more expensive flagships.

Audio Output is Great
With a pair of stereo speakers, the spatial audio output on Nokia 6 is surprisingly good. The overall audio quality is well above average.

Better Battery
Nokia 6 offers a pretty good battery life too with average usage. It can easily last for a whole working day.

What Makes Nokia 6 not Worth the Price?
Nokia 6 loses out on a number of things, that it’s competitors are offering at this price (some, costing even lesser).

User Interface
The UI on Nokia is a bit lacklustre. The bluish circular icons are very difficult to differentiate, and overall the interface is bit complicated.

Average Camera
Both the rear and front cameras are low on contrast and colour saturation. Details are average, but the image quality isn’t good at all. The videos too suffer from low contrast and detailing.

Downgraded Processor
The Snapdragon 430 chipset is a little dated. Though the UI works fine with the navigation and basic tasks, but Nokia 6 loses out on smoothness when it comes to intense multitasking. At this price, at least a Snapdragon 625 or Snapdragon 630 would have been a better choice.

Best Alternatives to Nokia 6
At the same price as the Nokia 6, there are a number of better alternatives, which outperform Nokia 6 by quite a few miles.

Redmi Note 4
With a metal unibody design and Snapdragon 625, this device outperforms any phone at this price range. With an above average camera, better processor and mammoth 4100 mAh battery, it performs like a beast.

Moto G5 Plus
The newest phone from the Moto G series, the Moto G5 Plus comes with a Snapdragon 625, and performs really well with multitasking. But the best part is the camera. Moto G5 Plus easily has the best camera in this price range. It runs Android 7.0 Nougat out of the box.

Honor 6X
The Honor 6X with a dual-camera and octa-core processor has a lot to offer. It has a good battery, and supports fast charging. It supports VoLTE and runs Android Marshmallow.

Hong Kong is showing promise as a destination for tech IPOsThe U.S. tech IPO window may have reopened in 2017 following a lull last year, but the outlook is also looking rosier for another listing platform located on the other side of world.
Hong Kong was widely thought to have blown its chance to put itself on the global map when Alibaba opted for a New York listing in 2014 because the HKSE was unable to accommodate its company structure. But, nearly three years on, the tide appears to be turning for some.
The Hong Kong Stock Exchange (HKSE) is experiencing a renaissance of sorts among the tech industry. Selfie app company Meitu held the largest listing from a tech company for nearly a decade in December — raising more than $500 million with its floating — while in recent weeks PC gaming brand Razer and Tencent-controlled e-books service China Publishing have both announced their intention to list in the city-state.

Speaking on stage at our TechCrunch China event in Shenzhen last month, a senior executive for logistics on-demand company Lalamove said his firm is eying a public listing in Hong Kong before 2020. Blake Larson, head of international for the company — which raised a $30 million Series B in January — said a dual-listing in the U.S. is possible, but the HKSE is the priority to “show it is possible to build a global technology company from Hong Kong.”

There’s plenty of interest beyond local companies, too, it seems. At the Rise event in Hong Kong this month, TechCrunch spoke to two founders who anonymously revealed that their Asia-based companies, each of which has raised more than $100 million in investment and does business worldwide, are devoting significant time towards a potential HKSE IPO in the future.

Ant Financial, the Alibaba affiliated fintech firm, has also been linked with a Hong Kong IPO. The firm raised over $3 billion at a valuation of up to $60 billion at the beginning of the year — that cash injection is reported to have pushed its much-anticipated IPO plan back to at least 2018 at the earliest.

Hong Kong may have landed a collection of reputable companies in Meitu, Razer and China Publishing, but it still has some way to go before it becomes a viable option for all.

For one thing, this trio all have notable businesses and brands in China, which is really a requisite factor. But there are further complications. Regulations make it difficult for companies that are still scaling their business to go public in Hong Kong since the exchange has stringent financial requirements.
“I definitely think the HKSE can be a destination for tech IPOs, but the Hong Kong government, administration and its investors all need to change their rules and ways to analyze growth potential of unprofitable internet companies,” Hans Tung, a partner with U.S.-China VC firm GGV, told TechCrunch.
Those thoughts were echoed by Kee Lock Chua, group president and CEO of Vertex Holdings, a firm affiliated with Singaporean sovereign fund Temasek.

“The Hong Kong Exchange is a viable listing venue for technology companies because of its liquidity and valuation,”Chua said in an email. “[But] the Hong Kong market generally still prefers profitable companies.”

“Technology companies that are growing rapidly but not profitable in the short term may find the U.S. market to be more suitable,” he added.

Another issue is that share structure factor. Hong Kong somewhat famously does not allow dual classes of common equity in its companies. That was the main facto that saw Alibaba head West for its IPO, which was a record U.S. listing and a major loss for Hong Kong.

“Alibaba should have been able to IPO in Hong Kong, the HKSE should have allowed Alibaba’s partnership structure to exist. Google and many tech companies have super voting structures on the Nasdaq. An Alibaba IPO in Hong Kong would have been a game changer,” Tung explained.

That said, there are young companies that have made it despite the requirements.

“Our portfolio company IGG [a mobile games developer] was listed on the GEM board [for growth companies] initially and was subsequently promoted to the Hong Kong main board. Today, it is trading at $2.5 billion in market cap,” Vertex’s Chua said.

The political uncertainty in the U.S. right now coupled with the development of unicorn startups across Asia gives Hong Kong a viable shot at becoming a credible IPO option. But the U.S. still retains cachet for tech companies in Asia and that’s reflect in those that are most likely to list next.

Tech firms like Singapore-based games firm Sea (formerly known as Garena), Vietnam’s gaming and messaging company VNG, and e-commerce company Reboonz (backed by both Vertex and GGV) are all reported to be exploring opportunities having grown beyond the venture capital ecosystem. However, in each case, media reports are linking them to U.S.-based IPOs.

Yet, there are no happy stories of Asian companies — excluding those from China — listing in America in recent times.

MOL Global is probably the most notable case. The Malaysian payment firm traded on the Nasdaq for a fairly turbulent 18-month period. Things got off to a bad start when the share price dipped 30 percent on its debut in October 2014, and, following a series of crises, the firm announced its delisting in April 2016. Ironically, MOL is involved in Razer’s IPO following an investment deal.

Sea is likely to be the first of the new Asian contenders to test the waters in the U.S. — Japanese chat app Line opted for a dual Tokyo-U.S. listing to mitigate risk last year — and how it performs, if and when it goes public, could be a deciding factor for others considering a similar route. In the meantime, it’ll be fascinating to see if the HKSE’s two incoming listings can convince more Asian founders to look away from the U.S. when it comes to going public.

Toyota wayToyota is known for its manufacturing efficiency. We’ve probably all heard that if a worker on the Camry line sees a problem, they have the authority to stop the line and address it. At the end of the day, teams meet to discuss what went wrong and what fixes actually fixed things. It’s called the Toyota Production System, or TPS, and, like any tech cult, it’s got lots of lingo and acronyms. (Try throwing around “Let’s kaizen this” if you want to seem in the know.) But it also can work for a startup as easily as it can work for the massive automotive manufacturer.

The point of TPS is to create a culture where problems are not repeated in order to achieve the end goal of improving quality. That’s as applicable to apps as it is to automobiles. In an interview after the panel, Bonini outlined the basics of the system, which has three parts:

Jamie Bonini, the vice president of the Toyota Production System Support Center, preaches the TPS gospel to organizations in North America and, recently, Australia. He’s worked with small manufacturers, hospitals and government agencies to teach them how to use Toyota’s principles in their particular settings. “You start with the customer,” Bonini said during a panel at the Aspen Ideas Festival. “Are they getting what they want? Then you work back from there.”

  • The philosophy that the customer needs to be served by the process and that the people who create the widget — whether that’s a car or a car-sharing app — are the most valuable resource in the organization.
  • The use of tech tools to establish flow through entire organization — and to halt that flow when necessary. Managers need to develop their teams so that the people closest to the problem can solve that problem.
  • The application of engineering and design to understand that flow, from the overall project plan to the precise sequence of steps required to complete a task. This can be reviewed every day or every week, but it needs to be revisited often.

These pillars, Bonini said, are “timeless.” Advanced technology can make the TPS system work better, but the focus on people — both those in the organization and the customer at the end of the process — remains an important part of the triangle.

“All three pieces of TPS must work,” Bonini said. “A lot of business leaders have never heard of all three pieces; they put all their emphasis on the tech tools.” Whether you’re in a 10-person startup or a 1,000-employee hospital, these three principals should work together to create a culture of trust and innovation.

Oh, and kaizen, for the record, is the process of changing things for the better, or in business terms, continuously improving the system at every step and every level.

Faraday Future answers mounting challenges with high-profile CTO hireFaraday Future is an electric car company with a very uncertain future, following news that it would be ending its effort to build an assembly plant for its vehicles in Nevada. The company’s primary backer, China’s LeEco, is in dire financial straits, and the would-be Tesla challenger is facing its own heat as a result. Now, however, the company is revealing a big-name hire – Ulrich Kranz, who previously headed BMW’s electric “i” series vehicle program, is joining as Chief Technical Officer.
Kranz’s long history at the German automaker makes the sudden shift to the untested and beleaguered FF all the more noteworthy; he’s hardly a callous climber, jumping from stunt hire to stunt hire. Still, there’s little doubt that Faraday considers this hire a strategic move – it’s a rare spot of good news for a company that has had precious little of that of late.
The addition of Kranz gives Faraday a new lead for its research and development, manufacturing, engineering and purchasing operations, the company tells me. He joins the company after a 30-year career at BMW, where he spent the past 10 years overseeing the i series, including the i3 and i8, BMW’s first dedicated EVs. Before that, Kranz led the MINI line, as well as product development across multiple areas at the automaker in previous roles.

Faraday also says that it’s “nearing the end” of a search for a turn-key manufacturing option, after being forced to walk away from its custom-built Nevada facility. Going with an existing manufacturing facility will help it keep costs down and add some runway, as it seeks to get its initial FF 91 sport sedan to market. The automaker unquestionably still faces huge challenges, and I still wouldn’t call its prospects promising, but Kranz’s hire is an interesting development nonetheless.

Amazon Beats Flipkart To Become India’s Most Influential Ecommerce Brand; Patanjali, Jio Make Surprise Entry Into Top 10Home grown Ayurvedic and FMCG company Patanjali, along with Mukesh Ambani led Reliance Jio have made a grand entry into the top 10 list of this ranking.

Meanwhile, SBI has emerged as the most influential banking brand in India.

The study to determine India’s most influential brands was conducted by Ipsos by conducting 36,000+ interviews of 1000 Indians, who were using 100+ brands.
But the biggest shocker: Amazon has beaten Flipkart to become India’s most influential ECommerce company.
India’s Most Influential Brands: Google Is #1
World’s largest search engine and most powerful Internet company, Google, has emerged as the most influential brand in India as well.
Makers of Windows OS, Microsoft is featured as the second more influential brand in India, followed by Facebook, which has been ranked #3.

Hence, top three most influential brands in India are from the USA.

Patanjali, Jio Make Entry Into Top 10

If we analyse the brands after top 3, then we will find a substantial presence of Indian brands, and this change is led by Patanjali, which has been ranked as #4 most influential brand.

In fact, this is Patanjali’s debut in this high profile ranking. Last year, it was not present in the top 10 list.

Reliance Jio, which has disrupted Indian telecom sector with their cheap and free data plans, has also made a stunning entry into the top 10 list, as they have been positioned #9.

Biggest E-commerce, Banking and Telecom Brands

As if confirming the meteoric rise of Amazon, the ranking has placed them at #6, whereas Flipkart has been ranked #10.

The irony is that Amazon has climbed 2 spots, while Flipkart has lost 3 positions.

State-run State Bank of India is the only banking brand in the top 10, as they have been ranked #5 in the overall list.

In telecom, Airtel is placed comfortably at #8, just one spot above Jio to become the most influential telecom brand in India. But with Jio catching up fast, it is only matter of time before Jio overtakes Airtel.

Ironically, Samsung is the only smartphone brand to get featured in the top 10 list, as they have been placed at #8.

Here is the top 10, most influential brands of India:
  1. Google
  2. MS
  3. FB
  4. Patanjali
  5. SBI
  6. Amazon
  7. Samsung
  8. Airtel
  9. Reliance Jio
  10. Flipkart

Between 11th and 20th positions, there are companies like Snapdeal, Apple, Dettol, Cadbury, SONY, HDFC Bank, Maruti Suzuki, Good day and Amul.

Hyundai launching its semi self-driving features earlier than plannedThe race to bring self-driving features to market is stepping up in a big way, now that GM’s Super Cruise is set to arrive in the Cadillac CT6 later this year, and Audi has announced it’ll ship its Level 3 self-driving tech in the next A8. Hyundai is speeding up its own timeline for commercialization of its “Highway Driving Assist 2” (HDA2) semi-autonomous features as a result.
The introduction of HDA2 will “minimize intervention by drivers,” according to Hyundai speaking to the Electronic Times. The tech “nears level 3 on freeways” according to the company, and its introduction will help to achieve the carmaker’s goals of commercializing fully autonomous vehicles for consumers by 2022.
The HDA2 system is properly considered a Level 2 autonomous feature, similar to Tesla’s Autopilot. The software handles speed and stops in highway driving conditions, and also handles changing to a crossroad, entering a junction, and merging onto a main road automatically when a driver indicates their intent to do so via their turn signal.

Hyundai had self-driving tech on display at CES, and has espoused a lightweight approach in terms of computing and sensor types in favor of detailed maps to keep costs down for consumers. The company is not generally perceived as a leader in the space, however, and deploying this tech earlier than intended could help it make up ground thanks to data collection efforts.
