What to Consider

Make sure your definition of unlimited matches the hosting service's.

Then there's the OS question. Do you need Windows servers? Linux servers? It's best to shop around. When it comes to server operating systems, Linux is typically the default option. Still, some services offer a choice of Linux or Windows hosting. If you have specific server-side applications that require Windows, such as SQL Server or a custom application written in .NET, then you need to make sure your web host has Windows hosting. But don't let the idea of a Linux host intimidate you.

Most web hosts nowadays offer a graphical interface or a control panel to simplify server administration and website management. Instead of typing at the command line, you'll click easily identifiable icons.

There are some specs that you may not find while browsing a web host's site. For instance, many web hosts don't list the amount of RAM offered by their shared hosting plans. In such instances, you can safely assume that the RAM total is less than 1GB. A few web hosting services offer premium shared plans that offer 1GB of RAM or slightly more. If want dependable-under-pressure performance without spending hundreds of dollars per month, look into virtual private server (VPS) hosting. Signing up for a VPS plan will give your future site a significant amount of computer resources.

You'll also want a web host with responsive 24/7 customer support. Forums, knowledge bases, and tutorials are useful tools, but there's nothing like getting another human being on the horn (or at least in a web chat).

An alternate form of shared web hosting is WordPress hosting. This option is for people who want to build their sites on the back of the popular WordPress content management system (CMS), but don't want to bother with a lot of the backend stuff (such as updating the apps and CMS, and enabling automatic backups). Managed WordPress plans typically have security features designed to protect the CMS from ne'er-do-wells.

Some web hosts offer managed WordPress as just one of their many hosting packages. Others specialize in WordPress hosting and don't offer additional hosting plans.

All the aforementioned features are valuable to the web hosting experience, but none matches the importance of site uptime. If your site is down, clients or customers will be unable to find you or access your products or services.

SQL SERVER – Can I Delete Always On Availability Groups Initial Sync Folder?

This was one of an interesting question which I heard from one of my clients who deployed Always On availability groups. I was not able to find much documentation and clarity so did some research and found an answer. This can also be an interview question as well.

Question:
I have configured Always On availability group using the Wizard. While configuration, I have selected a shared folder in below screen.

SQL SERVER – Can I Delete Always On Availability Groups Initial Sync Folder?

Due to some unavoidable reasons, I must remove that share. If I remove that share, will availability group continues to function? Is it needed like the way we have shared location in log-shipping?

Answer:
Yes, we can remove that share and it won’t have any impact on the existing availability group. The purpose of the share is to do an initial sync via backup and restore method done by Wizard interface when we use Initialize now option. One backup and restore is complete and databases are synchronized, we can remove the files or even the share itself. Log Shipping needs a share to propagate transaction log backups in a shared location which is not the case with availability.

SQL SERVER – Interesting Observation – Count of Temporary Table Re-generations

The best part of my SQL Server Performance Tuning Practical Workshop is that at the end of the workshop we spend quite a good amount of time to solve the issues users have in their production system. During one of the recent workshop, I was asked a very interesting question about temporary tables.

“How do we know the count of how many times a single temporary table has been regenerated?”

I particularly found this very interesting as so far in my career, I have been asked this only 3 times. The best part is that I knew the answer.

However, before we start answering this question, I must refer you to another amazing blog post written by my friend over here SQL SERVER – Maximum Allowable Length of Characters for Temp Objects is 116. This blog post contains very interesting information about the max size of the temporary table name.

Now let us read the answer of the question – how do we know how many times any particular temporary table has been regenerated.

When we create any temporary table, it is internally created with a 128 characters in its name. The last 12 digits of this long name contain unique magic bits or a hexadecimal number which indicates how many times the table has been created so far since the last SQL Server restart.

This number resets when SQL Server services are reset.

You can recreate this example by running the following query multiple times in the SQL Server Management Studio. Every single time when you re-run this query, it will increment one in the number which is at the end of the temporary table’s name.

SELECT [name]
FROM tempdb.sys.tables
WHERE [name] LIKE N'#TempTable%';

DROP TABLE #TempTable;

Here is the example when I ran above script multiple times in the SSMS and you will notice the last digit increasing by 1 every time I run the script.

SQL SERVER – How to See Scripts Executing in sp_executesql?

Just the other day I had received this question in an email and I was not sure what the user actually asked.

I had to ask user to repeat his question or explain me with example. He sent me following screenshot with his question again.

I am recreating his screenshot for easy understanding here.

Along with above screenshot he also added that he does not want to use the SELECT command to see the string’s content as it also returns as a another resultset.

I really find the question very interesting and here is the answer to the question:

We can use the PRINT command to display the content of the string which is passed a parameter to sp_executesql. Here is the screenshot with the answer.

You can see when you add a PRINT command it displays the content of the string in the message window and not in the resultset window.

I personally use this command very frequently when I am debugging any string operations in SQL Server.

NuoDB – 3 Important Features of Elastic SQL Database Every One Must Know

During a consulting engagement, I was asked if I know anything about NuoDB and what is my opinion about it. Well, NuoDB has been my favorite Elastic SQL Database and I have been using it for a while where I find relational database hits their limits and NewSQL solution NuoDB is the solution.

Let us see three important features of this elastic SQL Database I believe everyone must know.

Elastic SQL

Traditional relational SQL databases are great for on-premises, single data center environments, but they lose their significance as the needs of the organizations become more distributed, less predictable, and higher in volume. NoSQL solutions satisfy scale-out and continuous availability needs, but compromise strict transactional consistency, guaranteed durability, and the familiarity of a SQL interface. Many NewSQL products maintain SQL as they scale, but are often limited to highly specialized use cases.

Recently a new class of SQL databases has emerged that are purpose-built to deliver elasticity, strict transactional consistency, rich ANSI-SQL support, and continuous availability. NuoDB is an elastic SQL Database and overcomes the limitations of various traditional databases.

Elastic Scalability

Scaling is never an easy solution. Scaling a traditional relational database requires expensive provisioning, risky recreating procedures, sharding, or complicated clustering strategies. Similarly scaling NoSQL means adding development burdens on your application team. This also requires substantial rewrites to the application to incorporate data management logic now abandoned by the database.

NuoDB preserves ACID guarantees and a standards-based SQL interface while providing simple and elastic scaling. That means you add capacity only when you need it – and let go of it when you don’t.

Active Active Database

Who does not want to their database to Always on and Always available. For critical customer business operations, you need to deliver data fast and around the clock. The business success depends on the availability of the data. Most of the traditional databases either does not offer active-active infrastructure as well as they want users to pay extra for add-ons if they have any provision of the databases. Trust me my experience says that need of active active database has been always there, but there is no good solution for this particular product.
