Microsoft Working on Windows 10 Lean Edition for Devices With as Low as 16GB Storage
Microsoft is reportedly planning a new edition of Windows 10, apparently called 'Windows 10 Lean'. It is 2GB smaller in size compared to a regular edition of Windows 10 such as the Windows 10 Pro. The Lean edition is said to have been designed for devices with less storage and will reportedly be offered to OEMs to be used in low-end laptops and tablets. The new Windows 10 Lean edition was first spotted by Twitter user Lucan, who found references in the latest publicly released Windows 10 test build (17650). According to Lucan, Microsoft is reducing the OS's storage space needs by getting rid of components that are unnecessary on low-cost devices, such as the Internet Explorer.
Interestingly, as per the images shared, even Registry Editor appears to have been removed. As usual, Microsoft has not revealed any official information about the Windows 10 Lean edition. Meanwhile, as per a Windows Central report, the upcoming SKU will be available for devices that have 16GB of storage. It is said to have been mainly designed to ensure these devices receive Windows updates. Usually, low-end device users download apps, media, and files that prevent Windows updates from getting the necessary free space to upgrade to future updates of the operating system. Microsoft is planning to fix it with the Lean edition.
The Windows 10 Lean edition is similar to the classic Windows OS, "just streamlined so that it better fits on devices with smaller internal storage." As per the report, Windows 10 Lean will not remove support for legacy apps, meaning it will still have full Win32 app support. It is not a part of Windows Core OS nor will it run on Andromeda. The report adds that Microsoft is also working on Windows 10 Lean to ensure updates do not encounter rollbacks. This essentially means that the update install times could be slower on Windows 10 Lean to support higher install success rates.

Opera Touch With One-Handed Browsing Experience Launched
Opera on Tuesday announced two new products - a new mobile browser called Opera Touch and an updated Opera browser for desktops. Opera says the Touch browser has been designed from the ground up and it can connect with the updated Opera PC browser without setting up a password or login. The highlight of the new Opera Touch is that the navigation has been designed to be used with just one hand, making it easier for users to browse the Internet. The Opera Touch browser starts in search mode, ready to look for things on the web.
The keyboard will already be up and the address bar cursor will blink to indicate URL or search entry. "We have moved the browser's key functions within your thumb's reach," said Maciej Kocemba, product manager at Opera. "This means that, unlike in most other browsers, you can more easily browse and search the web when on the move." Additionally, there is a Fast Action Button (FAB) at the bottom of the screen, for the one-handed browsing experience. The new feature provides direct access to the most recent tabs and a search feature. It also enables the user to navigate through the browser using the thumb. The Opera Touch also supports voice search and lets users scan QR and barcodes. With this feature, when you see a product in a shop, you will be able to check its reviews online. The other key feature of Opera Touch is called Flow, which lets you send files, notes, and links to your PC.
Flow is end-to-end encrypted, and unlike other browser synchronising tools, you don't need to create a login or password. To access Flow, you will have to scan a QR code displayed in the Opera computer browser with Opera Touch. Meanwhile, the Opera browser for PCs has also been updated. It comes with an Instant Search feature that lets users quickly search the web and their open tabs. You can just use the shortcut ALT + Space or the button in the sidebar on any page to start searching. Opera Touch is available for Android on Google Play and it will come to iOS soon. To use the Flow feature, you can download the latest Opera browser on your Windows, Mac, or Linux PC.

What in the world did NASA just spot in the Arctic sea ice?
Every year, NASA takes a high-flying trip over the Arctic to monitor the ice and gather information on the area where people almost never tread. It’s been going on for a decade now, and most of the time the scientists make their observations with little fanfare. This year, however, the researchers snapped a photo of a collection of features that is causing a lot of interest as well as confusion. Rather than the endless open expanse of ice and snow that they are used to seeing, the team observed what appears to be large holes in the icy crust, along with wavy ice patterns that have no easy scientific explanation.
They don’t know what the features are or how they formed because they’ve never seen anything like it before, and now they’re doing their best to figure out why the strange patterns exist. “We saw these sorta-circular features only for a few minutes today,” John Sonntag, a scientist with the mission, wrote of the sighting. “I don’t recall seeing this sort of thing elsewhere.” Thus far, the researchers have been able to come up with a reasonable theory about the area that may explain some of the features they observed.
They believe that the area is covered in relatively new, “young” ice, and that it is probably thin enough that it is still flexible. That would account for the wavy pattern on part of the ice, but the obvious holes are harder to explain. “It’s definitely an area of thin ice, as you can see finger rafting near the holes and the color is gray enough to indicate little snow cover,” scientist Nathan Kurtz said following the mission. “I’m not sure what kind of dynamics could lead to the semi-circle shaped features surrounding the holes.
I have never seen anything like that before.” With no easy explanation, the researchers are considering all possibilities. One of the more interesting potential explanations is that the holes are the result of animals such as seals digging their way through the ice. No animals were observed during the mission, so if they did create the odd pattern they have since departed. Another potential source of the holes is warm springs spewing up from below, though that would be hard to confirm from the air. For the time being, the researchers aren’t concerned about the features, and they’re content to toss around ideas until they can learn more at a later date.

SwiftKey for Android Now Supports Urdu, 4 Other Languages
The SwiftKey keyboard app has been updated with support for Urdu (English) and a bunch of other languages, including Alsatian, Fongbe, Norman, and Warlpiri. The new language support is limited to Android devices. Microsoft has also added some bug fixes to deliver an improved typing experience through its keyboard app. Last month, the SwiftKey keyboard app for Android and iOS was updated with a toolbar that brings quick access to GIFs, emoji characters, and copied text. With the latest move, the SwiftKey app for Android now supports over 200 languages.
The app was already supporting widely used languages such as English (US, UK, AU, CA), Spanish (ES, LA, US), Portuguese (PT, BR), German, Turkish, French, Arabic, Russian, Italian, and Polish among various others. Apart from new languages, the updated SwiftKey app has some bug fixes. the punctuation slider on the virtual keyboard will no longer trigger the period when sliding finger on it. Further, the keyboard won't lock up when you try to tag someone in Instagram comments. The app has also received a layout fix that comes when using Dvorak + Split + Undock settings. You can visit Google Play to download the latest SwiftKey version on Android device. There isn't any word on an identical version for iOS devices. However, that could also debut in the coming days to match the experience with its Android counterpart.
Microsoft last month brought the SwiftKey 7.0 as the "biggest update" since its acquisition in 2016. That update brought a "Collections" feature as a toolbar to offer quick access to GIFs, emoji characters, and copied text. The toolbar can be used to store emoji, stickers, and GIFs. Also, the last update expanded the location sharing feature for eight new hybrid languages, including Assamese (English), Bengali (English), Kannada (English), Malayalam (English), Marathi (English), Nepali (English), Odia (English), and Telugu (English). Users can shift between these languages seamlessly.

Apple to Close Its Last Watch-Exclusive Store in May
Apple will shut down its last of the three Apple Watch-exclusive stores - located in Tokyo - it built when it launched the wearable in 2015. On May 13, the last Apple Watch-exclusive store will close its doors. Twitter user Shotaro Akiba has shared a photo on the microblogging platform showing the department store's announcement. Apple had shut down the other two stores in London and Paris last year. According to 9to5mac, the shop held a sale in which it was selling the remaining Apple Watch Edition inventory for as little as $700 (roughly Rs. 46,400).
These 18-karat gold watches were sold for at least $10,000 (roughly Rs. 6.62 lakhs) and as much as $17,000 (roughly Rs. 11.25 lakhs) when they first became available, the report said. In recent months, high-profile applications, including Instagram, Amazon, Google Maps and Twitter, pulled out their apps from the WatchOS. Driven by Apple Watch Series 3 shipments, the Cupertino-headquartered giant shipped a record 18 million Watch devices in 2017, an increase of 54 percent compared to the previous year.
"The Series 3 was the key growth driver, as total shipments of the latest version of Apple's Watch were just under nine million, making up nearly half of all shipments in 2017," Singapore-based market research firm Canalys said. Apple's shipments in the fourth quarter of 2017 grew by more than 32 percent over the fourth quarter of 2016 to eight million, the highest-ever number of shipments in a single quarter for any wearable vendor.

Think before telling a lie as your smartphone could soon become a lie detector
A scientist at University of Copenhagen has revealed in a research that with the help of a phone one can find out of the user is lying or not. This scientist has developed a machine learning algorithm which will help identify if a person telling a lie or not by studying the swipe and tap gestures on a smartphone. The research adds that the dishonest interactions often require more hand movements as compared to the honest ones. The algorithm developed is called Veritaps which flashed a green check mark when the statement is true. On the other hand, any false or doubtful statement is reported with a red question mark.
Presently, the app is in experimental stage and is only designed for Android smartphones. As reported by CNET, Aske Mottelson, one of the paper's authors, said "the algorithm's ability to detect lies is comparable to that of a polygraph. However, it has its limits and shouldn't be used in courtrooms or other high-stakes environments." The CNET report also adds that in one of the study the participants were asked to lie and make a true statement in order to check the colour that will appear on their phones.
It was noticed that the liars took more time on an average. In another similar kind of test, a person received money and was asked to split it in two. So, when the users were given the chance to lie about the amount received they took more time. The app, according to the scientist, has a similar approach as the polygraph test and it can be a useful and indicative tool.

Google plans to make Android Messages app an iMessage competitor, here’s how
Rich Communication Service or RCS is not a new term in the telecommunication industry. It is, in a way, an updated version of the SMS service that you use often. RCS can support multimedia, file sharing, group or single chats, location sharing, audio messaging and much more. Google is at the forefront of RCS and is now diverting more forces towards the particular platform.
As a result, it is halting the development of its Allo messaging app, reports The Verge. The report adds that Google is planning to implement RCS, or what they call as ‘Chat’ into their own stock Messaging app, something that will bring the app up against Apple’s iMessage. It is worth adding that Apple iMessage already has most of the features that RCS touts however, the platform is limited to Apple’s own ecosystem. Chat, however, is a carrier-based service and not something coming from Google directly.
Also mentioned is that Chat won’t be end-to-end encrypted, unlike Apple’s iMessage. Google is already in talks with several carriers around the globe for the implementation of RCS or Chat in their messaging system. And several handsets have Android Messages as their default texting app. Samsung is also said to support Chat services in its default messaging app. If you specifically want to use Google’s stock messaging app, it can be downloaded any time from the Play Store.
Unlike SMS, the new version will take up some amount of data, but everything depends on the telecom carriers. Furthermore, the report states that RCS developments will now be spearheaded by Anil Sabharwal, who earlier used to head Google Photos. The entire Allo team is said to have been shifted to the RCS project, states the report. Allo was launched two years ago and was one of the first apps based on Google Assistant.

Amazon Quietly Introduces a Lite Web Browser for Android Users in India
Amazon now has quietly launched a lite web browser app for Android devices in India. The app called “Internet:: fast, lite and private” on Google Play is visible but not necessarily downloadable depending on your device. The browser has been sitting on the Google Play app store since March and has fewer than 1,000 downloads, according to data from app store intelligence firm Sensor Tower.
The app is currently available to users located in India users only and is compatible with devices running Android 5.0 Marshmallow and above. Like most lite apps the app is designed to consume less space on the device. It comes at 2MB in size and Amazon promises it to be “lighter than the competition”. That’s surely smaller than other browsers, including Chrome (21MB), Edge (54.5MB), Firefox (19.9MB) and Opera (14.7MB).
The app itself is a typical web browser that comes with a homepage that shows general news and updates apart from cricket news for its users. The browser app also offers tab previews and enables an automatic fullscreen mode. Besides, the app supports private tabs that allow users to hide their browser history in their devices. Amazon’s Internet app also promises privacy by not collecting private data or asking for unnecessary permissions from you on your phone. Notably, the Internet Lite web browser app isn’t the only “lite” app from Amazon. The company also released Amazon Kindle Lite, a basic e-book reading app which once again comes under 2MB of file size. In addition, it is designed to work with slower data speeds and in areas with unstable data connectivity.
Similar to Amazon’s efforts, Google and Facebook have also rolled out a suite of lightweight apps for emerging markets like India. Google launched its lite apps under the Go suite of apps which include the Google Go, Google Maps, Google Assistant Go, Files Go and YouTube Go which are available on PlayStore for all to download. Facebook also offers Lite versions of its apps, like Facebook Lite and Messenger Lite, to reach users with limited connectivity and access to data.

Google’s new DIY AI kits could help shape the future
The “technology of the future” is constantly changing. Remember when Google Glass was the future and venture capitalists launched huge funds dedicated to financial Glass app developers? Remember when chat bots were the future and every tech company on the planet burned time and money developing Facebook Messenger bots? Yeah, most “technologies of the future” end up being little more than silly trends that vanish almost as quickly as they arrived.
This time around, however, things feel like the might be a bit different when it comes to the latest “technology of the future.” Why? Because artificial intelligence really is the tech of the future. Tech companies large and small have hopped on the AI bandwagon, but this time for good reason. AI and machine learning are integral to technologies of the future, potentially giving computers capabilities that we can’t even imagine right now. And Google has found a new role to play by equipping budding engineers with the tools they need to learn about AI and build their own AI solutions. No, this isn’t the start of the robot uprising. It’s the start of a new “AIY” initiative at Google that will offer comprehensive DIY kits for people — mainly students — who want to experiment with and learn about different AI solutions.
Google just announced two new “AIY” (it’s like DIY, but for artificial intelligence) kits that build upon the ideas the company set forth with its first-generation kits. This time around, however, the new kits ship with everything a student might need to build AI solutions, including a Raspberry Pi Zero WH board. “We’re taking the first of many steps to help educators integrate AIY into STEM lesson plans and help prepare students for the challenges of the future by launching a new version of our AIY kits,” Billy Rutledge, Director of AIY Projects at Google, wrote in a blog post. “The Voice Kit lets you build a voice controlled speaker, while the Vision Kit lets you build a camera that learns to recognize people and objects. The new kits make getting started a little easier with clearer instructions, a new app and all the parts in one box.” He continued, “To make setup easier, both kits have been redesigned to work with the new Raspberry Pi Zero WH, which comes included in the box, along with the USB connector cable and pre-provisioned SD card.
Now users no longer need to download the software image and can get running faster. The updated AIY Vision Kit v1.1 also includes the Raspberry Pi Camera v2.” This is a very cool example of a tech company taking some initiative to help encourage communities to enhance their STEM programs in schools. Google’s new AIY Voice Kit and Vision Kit are already available online at Target.com and in Target stores across the country, and Google hopes to offer them in other regions in the coming months. The Voice Kit is available for $49.99, while the more complex Vision Kit costs $89.99.

How to check what macOS apps will go obsolete soon
Apple is planning to move away from 32-bit apps completely this time. The firm last year ditched 32-bit apps in favour of 64-bit apps on iOS and this time it is the macOS. According to a report by Ars Technica, macOS users will start (some have already started) seeing notifications while opening 32-bit apps, suggesting that these won’t be supported in future versions. Although it’s up to the developers when or if they choose to upgrade their apps, what you can do for now is to check what all apps on your MacBook laptop or iMac desktops. Of course, you will see the notification pop up when the app is opened, there is a way to see all the 32-bit apps at once in a list. Here’s what you need to do.
Step 1: In your macOS-running device, click on the Apple logo on the top-left corner.
Step 2: In the drop-down, click on the ‘About this Mac’ option. Step 3: Clicking on it will open a new window revealing details about the device, its memory, disk space and more. In the particular window, click on the ‘System Report’ option at the bottom.
Step 4: In the next window that opens, navigate to Software/Applications options on the left sidebar and sort all the apps by ’64-bit (Intel)’.
Step 5: All those apps that say ‘No’ means they are 32-bit apps and need to get updated to 64-bit. Ones showing ‘Yes’ means they are 64-bit apps and will work seamlessly in the next macOS version.
There is no final date as to when 32-bit apps will stop working completely on macOS devices. However, Apple’s push towards the 64-bit platform is evident. The company did alert developers last year for this as well. “At our Worldwide Developers Conference in 2017, Apple informed developers that macOS High Sierra would be the last version of macOS to run 32-bit apps without compromise,” says a statement in Apple’s support page. We are likely to hear more about this transition at the upcoming WWDC 2018 conference.

Google Home smart speaker: First impressions
That technology can excite, mesmerise and fascinate is a well-known facet. At the same time, like with most other things, there is a dark side to it which can be scary. Considering the times we live in (read the whole Facebook privacy invasion debate), sharing more information with all-things tech has become a part of the discourse.
At such a time, Google has launched its Google Home smart speakers in India. It’s an intriguing device and yet the more you use it, there’s a sense of scepticism about what all you share that rises up every time you use it. Keeping the fear and scepticism aside, we spent some time with the Google Home smart speaker and here is our first impression. There’s no denying the fact the Google Home is a device that grabs your attention. It’s a conversational piece (pun unintended) and the minute you switch on, it has all your attention.
Almost a cylindrical shape, Google Home comes in a neat box with an all-white cable. To switch it on, you need to have the Google Home app installed on your phone and a reliable Wi-Fi connection. To connect and install the speaker is a breeze and the whole process is self-explanatory as you start using it. “Hey Google, how was my day” we asked the Google Home. It tells you your name, the time of the day, how the weather is outside and even where you just commuted from. All these settings can be customised.
For example, the default setting is that how your day command would end with Google telling you the top news of the day. At the top of the Google Home, there are touch-capacitive buttons and four LED lights which flash in Google-themed colours. It’s lovely to look at and easy to use – that’s two pluses to begin with. What did come as a surprise is that there's no Bluetooth connectivity in the Google Home and also that it runs only on a power adapter. We used the Google Home to play some music. “Ok Google, play some Pink Floyd” and Wish You Were Here was immediately played. Bored in the middle of any song? Just say, “Ok Google, that’s enough” and it will stop on cue. As a standalone music speaker, this is a good device. The volume levels aren’t really exceptional but will meet the needs of most average users. You can also tell Google Home to reduce and increase the volume and does follow the command.
Since it works with Chromecast, we also used Google Home to play YouTube videos on a television. You do get a bit fatigued by saying "Ok Google" and "Hey Google" to the Google Assistant before each command. With the review unit, Google did send us a couple of smart home devices like Philips Hue bulb and smart controller. We haven’t had the time to review those products in detail but we will be writing about it in our complete review. There’s a lot Google Home can do for you but the key for it being a supremely smart speaker is simple: information. The more information you share, the smarter the device becomes. Sometimes there’s a very thin line between a gimmicky product and a product high on functionality.
In the case of Google Home, it seems like that currency is money and information. Spend more on smart gadgets and get the full functional value of Google Home. Give it more information and it becomes your truly smart assistant. In the next couple of days, we will be doing both. Read our detailed review soon to find out if Google Home is worth the hype and hoopla and does it have to take it on Amazon and its Alexa and Echo range of devices.
