Pretty Little Liars prop master Chris Vail explains season 7’s sinister hacker device
As Pretty Little Liars reaches its series finale, will we finally learn who has been tormenting the lead characters? The show, originally about a stalker sending threatening texts to five teenagers, has spent seven seasons transcending peers like Gossip Girl and becoming a suspenseful thriller, crammed with anonymous hackers and nasty gadgets.
In the penultimate episode, the five women at the show’s heart — the Liars, in fan parlance — finally defeated their stalker’s latest ploy, an elaborate device that was part map and part board game. It’s actually a military-grade super-gadget, indestructible by the show’s hackers, Caleb (Tyler Blackburn) and Mona (Janel Parrish). This device is central to the season-seven plot, and it’s full of tricks, spitting poisonous gas when Caleb gets too close, and brandishing a box-cutter at Mona when she tries to lovingly pet it. It even uses AR to show the Liars where a missing corpse has been buried. The game may not appear in the finale, but given that the stalker (once known as “A,” now as “A.D.”) ominously confiscated the board pieces, it’s always possible the game will resurface in some form in the finale. The show’s prop master, Chris Vail, who also worked on the Austin Powers film series, recently talked to me via email about the process of making the device.
What inspired the super-gadget?
We looked at all kinds of things to inform how the game wanted to look and feel. Old-school board games like Life and Risk, that cool model of the town in Beetlejuice, the game in Jumanji, cool YouTube videos about augmented reality games… There was a good deal of discussion where the writers and myself tried to take our favorite elements from all those things and incorporate them into a game that had the charm of a traditional board game, but also incorporated the digital technology that “A” commonly used.
How long did it take to make it, and what materials did you use?
Start to finish, it took a couple of months, and we used all kinds of materials. Lots of trial and error. I was originally going to try to make the top out of wood, but it just wasn't versatile enough. We found a material called Sintra that is basically a PVC material that was printable. The WB Design Studio guys were thus able to use a large-format printer to print on one side, and then I had them CNC route the back of it out, so it was thinner in the middle and then had thicker edges. This way, it could fit like a shoe-box lid over the raised base. The base was a nice hardwood, and we also CNC routed that pattern into the sides. The models on top were plastic, and were pieced together from various existing scale train models and craft-store materials. There were resin-molded skulls and a metal jail cell that pops up out of the floor. A steel trap door on the front where various things popped out. Some paint and tears and love, and there you go.
What was the manufacturing process like?
I initially sketched out an incredibly crude version of the thing on a piece of posterboard. That first version had a lot of the basic layout of the finished board. That version, however, looked like a 7-year-old's school project. Our graphic artist, Cristina Colissimo, and another artist, Jon Neill, created the finished artwork for the board. Jon also built the models of the town. WB Design did the large-format printing and CNC machining of the board and the base. The cabinet shop built the base. I had the WB FX shop build the steel trap door where things shot out. Joe Luther, one of our set lighting technicians, did an amazing job of creating the LED lighting, which could actually be controlled remotely by the lighting board operator. And on and on… Dozens of talented people doing specific things. There was a ton of trial and error as we tried to get all of those elements to come together into a cohesive thing.
How did you achieve the effects of gas and weapons and clues emerging from it?
I don't want to ruin it for anybody, but the technology involved in that is named Grant Burdette. He was our lead special-effects person. For each one of those things, we built a specific device, so we were constantly modifying the underside of that board. But really, it was Grant, under a table with a hole cut in it, who was making that magic happen. The poisonous gas… After we experimented with all kinds of tiny smokers and high-tech solutions, we landed on turning a can of compressed air, like you use to clean your keyboard, upside down. It shoots stream of the liquid propellant out. We loved the way that looked, but that's not safe to shoot into someone's face, so… We ended up having Tyler react as if something shot out, but there was nothing there. Then we shot a plate of the gas shooting out, and our editors married those together. Box-cutter? Grant under a table. Envelope? Grant under a table. Game pieces moving? Grant under a table. Being "A" is hard work… That's the moral of that story.
Do you think someone could actually make a real version of this thing?
I'm going to have to go with, "Anything is possible." I do actually believe you could do a version of it in real life. When we had to conceive the blueprints we made for the machine, we had to give some thought as to how it might really work, and I think it could probably be done. It would have to be a little different than the one we built. It would be insanely difficult, and require far more engineering and IT savvy than I possess. And time. And money. As people who make television, we rely on our skills at manipulating the medium to create these magic moments.

Petition calls for Big Brother to be banned from TV after ‘unacceptable scenes of violence’
The petition claims: ‘Every year this prime time TV show is fronted by unacceptable violence, language, sexual exploitation, and scenes of unacceptable behaviour suitable for television viewing.
[ads-post]
‘Year upon year there are scenes of violence, past episodes of racial harassment, unacceptable behaviour and this is condoned by tv producers all in effort to gain viewing figures.’

The row broke out after BB bosses gave the group alcohol and asked them to describe each other’s personality traits.

The game got off to a bad start with Lotan and Isabelle immediately on the attack and it ended with security running in and breaking everyone up.

Lotan threw his drink, hitting Hannah and leading her – backed by her sister Deborah – to begin fighting after Lotan’s pal in the house Ellie allegedly threatened to attack them.

Lotan, who had gone off to the Diary Room to vent about Isabelle, then returned to the house and, never one to shy away from an argument, finished his row.

Big Brother said: ‘Lotan has been removed from the Big Brother house and will not be returning. The events leading up to this will be shown on tonight’s [Sunday’s] Big Brother at 10pm on Channel 5.’

Big Brother has now warned the housemates that they all face eviction following the ‘unacceptable behaviour’.

But that is not good enough for one fan – or perhaps not a fan, in fact – who wants the show pulling from the airwaves ‘immediately’ and any future .

Where will we get our daily fill of watching people arguing though? Oh yeah, Love Island. That’s right.

Chris Brown performed at Sunday's BET Awards where ex Karrueche Tran was in the audience.

Luckily the pair didn't cross paths.

Karrueche, 29, was granted a five year restraining order against the 28-year-old artist June 15 due to his continued threats and history of violence against the actress.

While the crowd went wild for the singer-dancer, his former flame Karrueche made sure she kept a safe distance from Zero singer.

The LA native was granted a permanent restraining order against Brown on June 15. The order is valid for five years.

According to the order, the singer must stay 100-yards away from Tran, her home and her place of work. Brown was also ordered to pay her legal fees, which amount to $3500.
During her testimony in court, the Claws star claimed that after they broke up, Brown demanded she return diamond rings he bought her; when she refused he became aggressive.

She claimed he texted her threatening messages such as: 'I'm not being nice to you no more, if I see you out in public again and I'm there I will make you hate me even more, don't be anywhere I'm out in public, I'm going to ban you from all events.'

She claims he also texted her: 'B*tch I will beat the s**t out of you'; and 'I promise you I will make your life hell'; and 'I can get my money back and I'm tired of playing games,' the site reported.

Karrueche also told the court Chris had physically beat her when they were together. Their relationship began in 2010 and lasted on-and-off until final ending things in 2015.
Complicating things further, Karrueche is  rumored to be dating rapper Quavo of Migos, who also performed at the awards.

Ahead of the ceremony, many believed Karrueche would skip the event to avoid any possible encounter with Brown.

A source close to the star spoke to HollywoodLife ahead of the awards, telling the site 'Karrueche is stressing out about the BET’s this weekend.'
'Things have been going well with Quavo, so she wants to be by his side at the awards show. But, she fears that might not be possible.

'Due to her restraining order with Chris, Karrueche fears that there will be a messy run–in between the three of them.'

It seems like Karrueche was willing the hedge her bets to be there to support her new man, though.

Rumors of a romance between the Welcome to Willits actress and Bad And Boujee artist sparked after the pair was seen leaving a Mississippi concert together April 9.
They have yet to go public with their relationship.

“There’s a lot of endings” in next week’s episode says the Bill Potts starDoctor Who: Steven Moffat and Pearl Mackie drop playful hints about next week’s finale
Next week’s Doctor Who series could see many things – a regeneration and possibly the demise of the Doctor’s companion Bill.
[ads-post]
And at a Facebook Live Q and A after a special Cardiff screening of Saturday night’s first instalment of the finale, showrunner Steven Moffat and Bill Potts actress Pearl Mackie tanatalised fans about what the future may have in store – especially where Bill is concerned.
“She’s a Cyberman from now on,” said Moffat, who was clearly joking. "She’s one of those ones in the trailer actually. She was just killing people. That’s the way it is sometimes.”
Asked by a fan from the audience if it was "emotional filming the death of your character in these last episodes” Mackie replied: “I mean, I’m quite an emotional person, so it was pretty emotional, I mean even just reading any of it and at the read through it was quite emotional because there’s a lot of endings.
“I think that’s credit to Steven’s writing that you can get that kind of emotion from it when you read it that you’re supposed to get when you watch it.”
A lot of endings? We know Peter Capaldi is stepping down – but is Pearl? Wasn't she answering a question about a "death".
A production source on the show assured RadioTimes.com that Mackie’s answer to the question was not a confirmation that her character would die.
“Pearl was answering about the scene where Bill appeared to die before being taken away for 'treatment' at the hospital, where viewers later discovered that she was eventually converted into a Mondasian Cyberman. This is not confirmation either way.”
In an interview with Graham Norton yesterday Mackie did her best not to give any clues, but she hinted that she would be keen to continue playing the character under new showrunner Chris Chibnall.
As for Moffat’s plans he discussed his new drama project Dracula which he is writing with Mark Gatiss and said: “I’ve got a few ideas I’d like to do that are as far away from Doctor Who and Sherlock as I can manage. Not that I don’t love those things more than anything because I do.
“I have other plans [before Dracula] mostly inviting a balcony and a gin and tonic."
Moffat had to be prompted by the audience to give the start time of next week’s episode, prompting laughs from the audience. But he joked that he could be excused the slip because he was still working on the episode.
“We haven’t actually, finished episode 12 yet! We haven’t’ seen the finished version so I have got things to worry about before we worry about when we put it out. It could be Sunday it could be the following Thursday."
And it allowed him a chance to pay tribute to the best TV magazine in the world.
“I always check the Radio Times myself, a very popular listings magazine.”
Quite right too.

Ekta Kapoor combines the classic Chandrakanta Santati with the magical world of Disney and Harry Potter, to create her own desi fairytale.

First things first; you won't be able to see Devaki Nandan Khatri's classic novel Chandrakanta in the same light ever again after watching Ekta Kapoor's telly version of it. [ads-post] Hint: She has treated Chandrakanta the way Amish Tripathi has treated Ramayana-fictionalising the storyline and adding her own interpretation to it. To be more precise, Ekta has combined the body and soul of two starkly different worlds to create her own magical world. Only Ekta can do the task of combining a classic Chandrakanta Santati, mythology Krishna Charita, with the magical world of Disney and Harry Potter, to create her own desi version, which comes out to be a gripping drama. The only trouble is when you combine too many things, it lacks soul. But sure, there's magic and a lot of it, that will keep the viewers glued to their seats.
Chandrakanta review: This heady cocktail of Harry Potter, Snowhite and Naagin is sure to make you high
How Chandrakanta's magical world unfolds Disney style
The show is touted as 'Jaadui duniya ki sabse badi gaatha' (biggest tale of the magical world). In Ekta's fairytale world there are flying carpets (ala Disney), shape-shifting humans (a la Naagin), and all things magical. [ads-post] It's a world of aiyaars and aiyaaras, who have special powers. It's the story of two warring kingdoms Vijaygarh and Naugarh, the latter ruled by the evil queen Iravati, who's character is modeled on Snowhite's evil queen. We are so sure about the inspiration because there's a desi version of Mirror called Aaina who tells Iravati about her future and also her death.
Chandrakanta
Spoilers ahead: What happened in the opening episode

In the kingdom of Vijaygarh, Rani Ratnaprabha (Shilpa Saklani) is the head of aiyaars, and she protects them with Vishnu's blessing called Tilismi Khanjar, that also gives her magical powers. However, after the birth of her daughter, she decides to surrender it so that she can take care of her daughter like a normal human and not a magician. Till her daughter turns 21, Ratnaprabha needs somebody who can protect Tilismi Khanjar and for that she organizes a contest and invites magicians from all over the world. One who wins the contest would get Tilismi Khanjar. Ratnaprabha's sister Vishakha is the strongest contender, but all of a sudden the evil Iravati (Urvashi Dholakia) enters the scene demanding to be admitted as an entry. According to the rules of the contest, an aiyyar cannot be stopped from taking part in the competition. Iravati beats Vishakha and claims Tilismi Khanjar but Ratnaprabha feels she isn't trustworthy and refuses to hand over the weapon to her. Eventually Iravati kills both the king and the queen, but Ratnaprabha is successful in handing over the Tilismi Khanjar to Lord Vishnu.
[ads-post]
The strongest character in the show till now is that of Iravati, the evil queen who'll remind you of Snowhite's evil queen and even has a talking mirror Aaina with her who given her an insight about the future including her death. She is vicious, selfish and manipulative, and can go to any extent for acquiring more power, so much so that she doesn't shy away from using her own son (foster) as her pawn. She makes him strong and at the same time a drug addict so he can never disobey her.
Veer (Vishal Aditya Singh) has a strong muscular physique and can tackle hundreds of opponents at the same time, but is weak from inside. He's a drug addict and can kill anyone on his mother's command. He doesn't have a mind of his own. On the other hand, the innocent and beautiful Chandrakanta (Madhurima Tuli), who has been brought up by her foster parents, has inner strength. She is content with taking care of her maa and baba, but deep within she desires to be the biggest magician.

It's a no-brainer that the sequence of birth of Chandrakanta and sending the newborn away to the another kingdom has been inspired by the tale of Shri Krishna's birth.

VFX and sets
The sets of Chandrakanta have been designed by National Award winning Art Director Chandravadan More, and he has been successful in creating the grandeur and the opulence demanded for the show. As for VFX, we cannot compare it to the international standard, but it definitely looks better than what we have already seen on Indian TV.

Verdict
All in all, Chandrakanta has everything it takes for a show to win the ratings game. It's a cocktail of all the folklores and fairytales you have been grown up reading, packaged wonderfully in a glossy, beautiful package of Disney-style visuals.

Meet the new Chandrakanta

Chandrakanta

“Chandrakanta” is all set to replace Naagin 2 on Colors, Madhurima Tuli, who is playing the title role, talks about the effort that has gone into playing the popular character.
Excerpts:
“Chandrakanta” has been a blockbuster show in the past as well, do you believe you will live up to the expectations?
The show is based on the book “Chandrakanta” which was beautifully written by Devaki Nandan Khatri. The story is the same, it has love, revenge and betrayal but we have definitely taken a different approach. The audience today is enjoying watching shows that showcase mythology and fantasy in a different light, and we are trying to provide them with the same. This time, we are really trying to connect with the youth. The youth is not aware of the story of Chandrakanta and we are trying to change that by bringing the story back in a different, magical way. It is important to connect to the youth as they are shifting towards web series of Netflix and Amazon Prime.
Tell us about the role and your preparation
Chandrakanta is a very strong, independent and fierce character; just like the girls today. Her mother decided to send her away; from Vijaygarh to Suryagarh so that she stays safe. She has been taken care of by fishermen and has grown up to be a fierce warrior. She is a princess, has powers and can perform magic; yet she has her innocence intact. If someone does something wrong, she ensures that justice is served. She is always there for the needy and makes sure no one wrongs them. She is the perfect example of beauty with brains.
I had to deeply connect to the character and be more strong as a person so that I could do justice to the role. Personally, the role of Chandrakanta has helped me become a stronger person. In today's world there is a lot of negativity, yet Chandrakanta remains extremely positive and shines bright. My role demanded me to do horse riding, though it was a challenge it was something I always wanted to do. Sword fighting was definitely challenging, I had sore arms every day!
I have to wear slightly revealing outfits, so it becomes slightly awkward for me at times. But ultimately, it is the outfit of a warrior. I don't consider it to be a glamorous doll look rather I see it as a smart warrior outfit.
This is not the first time that you are working with Ekta Kapoor, how has been your experience been so far?
I have previously worked with Ekta Kapoor in ‘Kumkum Bhagya’ and ‘Parichay’ and my experience has been wonderful. Working with Ekta has a very homely feeling and I feel grateful for the opportunities that she has granted me.
Sadly, I had to quit ‘Kumkum Bhagya’; maybe it was destiny. But Ekta called me back for this show, and I am glad and thankful for this role.
You have worked on the small screen as well as the big screen, how has your journey been?
My journey has been crazy, but in a good way. Luckily, I have been blessed and I kept on getting work. I have worked in Hindi film industry as well as the South, both of them are very different. I personally prefer working in Hindi movies and TV shows and I thoroughly enjoy doing them.
‘Prem Ya Paheli - Chandrakanta’ is a show which is already on air on Life Ok. Do you believe it will be a challenge to overcome this competition?
It is definitely going to be a tough competition as they already have an established fan base, but I am not going to get pressurised.
If I succumb to the pressure, I won't be able to give my 100%. It is entirely on the audience whether they like our efforts or not, but I have definitely remained positive. I believe if you don't expect too much, you become happy no matter what the result is.

Welcome to the “unconventional” (and spandex-clad) world of GLOW
One of the GLOW pilot’s funniest moments happens early on, in a line that’s not an obvious punchline but has a clear purpose: “Getting pregnant and written off that show—best decision I ever made.” It’s funny because it’s sad; it’s not even really presented as a joke the same way Ruth’s (Alison Brie) opening audition or the G.L.O.W. tryouts are. Yet it’s one of the earliest signs of the type of world in which GLOW exists. We know it’s the fluorescent, spandex-clad 1980s, but that sadness—that chicken salad out of chicken shit mentality without even batting an eyelash at the actual meaning—is what GLOW begins with. The sadness is more immediately apparent with Ruth, especially as she intentionally recites Steve Guttenberg’s lines in her audition or turns a simple “hair mare” wrestling maneuver into wrestling Les Mis or gets accosted by street youths. But the way Debbie (Betty Gilpin) fools herself into calling such a bad situation a blessing is the perfect showcase of the mental gymnastics these characters have had to go through to be accepted, if they’ve even reached a point of acceptance in any form at all. It’s that lack of true acceptance and a little bit of betrayal which bring all the ladies together at the “unconventional” GLOW.
Netflix’s GLOW is a heavily fictionalized—“inspired by” the original series, instead of a biographical stroll down memory lane—take on the real G.L.O.W. (Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling) professional wrestling show from 1986 to 1992. The characters are all based on the spirit of G.L.O.W., but there’s no Babe the Farmer’s Daughter (Ursula Hayden, GLOW Consultant) or Matilda the Hun in sight. Instead, creators Liz Flahive and Carly Mensch have built their own G.L.O.W. Girls from the ground up.
What better way to tell a story about jealousy, betrayal, and self-worth than in a setting where backstabbing, politicking, and manipulation are the norm, despite the collaborative process. For non-wrestling fans, there tends to be a general understanding that the very concept of pro wrestling boils down to an adrenalized soap opera. If Soapdish taught us anything, it’s that a soap opera (or any TV series) can have just as much drama behind the scenes as it does in front the camera. So for GLOW to have Sam Sylvia (Marc Maron) book his show around Ruth and Debbie’s real life conflict—as the last few moments of the pilot set up—that’s just smart business that can lead to even better wrestling storytelling.
Professional wrestling’s an absolutely overwhelming world, and as niche as G.L.O.W. was, GLOWunderstands that it was no exception to that vastness. These women weren’t in WWF, thousands of Hulkamaniacs screaming at them; they were strangers in a strange land, who somehow made it work. The strange land part is possibly how a lot of the audience for this show will feel, right there with these characters. However, from a wrestling fan perspective, what impressed me most about this pilot was just how accessible it was to an audience who knows absolutely nothing about professional wrestling... without insulting the audience of hardcore wrestling fans. It’s basically “Wrestling 101,” without also being an “Idiot’s Guide To Wrestling.” The characters here (except for Carmen, part of a wrestling legacy) are on the outside looking in, and as the show invites them in, it does the same for its audience, no matter the knowledge level. The carny nature of pro wrestling has often made that type of accessibility difficult, but GLOW starts off fairly quickly with a nice sense of balance.
Plus, GLOW shows that it knows its own world well by providing a true ‘80s style montage in the auditions for the G.L.O.W. Girls, introducing a cast of characters you instantly want to spend more time with. That actually highlights one of the weaker points of the pilot, because if anything, the episode feels like it could be longer. That’s a rarity for a Netflix show, but it’s a good problem for GLOW to have here. Without spoiling much, episode two truly feels like the second half of this pilot (instead of just a typical “pilot junior”); by itself, this episode isn’t as whole as it could be. Because while this episode does relatively well by both Ruth and Debbie—who, despite the ensemble, are obviously the centerpiece—in the case of the latter, she mostly exists here in the realm of what she means to Ruth. What she means to Ruth as a friend, as a career goal and rival, as the wife to the man she slept with. GLOW (and G.L.O.W. ) clicks when it officially pits these two against each other, causing art to imitate their awkwardly fought life, but it can’t sustain itself if Debbie doesn’t become anything other than an extension of Ruth. Her ambushing Ruth at the end of the episode obviously opens the door to that, but right now, there’s unevenness in their dynamic in Ruth’s favor. That could be a problem in the long run.
Ruth may be the audience’s entryway into this world, but you see, for Ruth, her life’s a joke, she’s broke, and her love life’s D.O.A. It’s like she’s always stuck in second gear; it hasn’t been her day, her week, her month, or even her year. Would that Debbie could be there for her (like she’s been there before), but Ruth ruins that by sleeping with the woman’s husband. We quickly learn from Mark (Rich Sommer), as he brings up the speech that made him pursue her (about deserving things that the “shiny people” always get), that she feels entitled. She calls her parents’ answering machine, telling them she needs money instead of asking, and only remembers at the last minute to inform them of the relatively good news about her career. And her reaction to Debbie’s anger over the affair is, “It just happened,” an absolute lack of responsibility in the official dissolution of her best and possibly only friendship. She’s struggling, and she doesn’t have it all… but GLOW realizes that does not instantly make her a sympathetic character. It would honestly feel disingenuous and somewhat clichéd if GLOW went out of its way to make Ruth come across as the definitive hero of this story despite all of this. It’s also an expected choice, given the outsider’s perspective about this entire story and concept, but it’s a more interesting choice to outright designate her in a villainous role. But because of said role, Debbie needs to be more than just “someone in Ruth’s life.”
Ruth sees herself as an “Artist,” and where she eventually sees G.L.O.W. as an outlet for her craft, Sam sees dollar signs, like any wrestling promoter would. He sees a sold out crowd popping like crazy for his two marquee stars. The idealism and creativity and athleticism of wrestling is great—and in Sam’s defense, his ability to see so vividly involves that—but Sam’s obviously on the other side of that world. Sam’s side provides an image that can sells his show and even sells this show, as it’s exactly what you expect when you read the words “Alison Brie wrestling series.” So give the audience what they want. GLOW does that with this pilot; the set up is there, as are all the tools to move forward. Does the episode reinvent the wheel when it comes to wrestling or even TV? No. But it shows an understanding of storytelling—in terms of both forms of entertainment—and glimmers of something special. It also does so with a surprising amount of earnestness, considering the source material and subject matter. You could say the same about the original G.L.O.W. series.

Stray observations

  • If you’re reading this review, I’m sure you already know I’m a big professional wrestling fan, so I’m really happy to be covering GLOW. I’m also working to make these reviews just as accessible to non-wrestling fans as the show is, so if anyone has any questions or needs further explanation about a pro wrestling aspect of the show, feel free to ask me in the comments. Pro wrestling is for everyone!
  • Speaking of, as great of a movie as The Wrestler is, I always found its presentation to be that of an absolutely foreign world to non-wrestling fans and one that didn’t care to invite them into it. It wanted that audience to be a fly on the wall, engaged but not in the way typical of an actual, engaged wrestling audience. GLOW, on the other hand, feels like it wants that type of engagement.
  • Hell’s Bells, Trudy! And that’s what I have to say about the tainted Mad Men reunion between Alison Brie and Rich Sommer. Well, that and the fact that Ruth does everything she can to shut Mark up as he tries to make their sex a deeply intense, romantic thing (constantly calling her “real”). Debbie’s not wrong when she says Ruth can’t love anyone, is she?
  • I want to see Ruth’s “clowning workshops” so badly, though I don’t know if they’d be more embarrassing than her confrontation with the Los Angeles Death Squad… “Pert Plus-looking bitch” is such an insult of the time.
  • “Mouse, don’t go!” Yes, I know with The A.V. Club demographic I probably should’ve gone with “Knives, don’t go,” but I can’t help my initial reaction to Ellen Wong’s Jenny as she considers bailing on G.L.O.W. With Ellen Wong on GLOW, Lindsey Gort popping up in the latest Lucifer season, and Katie Findlay rocking the final season of Man Seeking Woman, this has been a good TV season to really miss The Carrie Diaries.
  • The moment Ruth turns on WWF and starts creating her own characters, that’s when she finally gets it. She may not get it completely, but the divide between wrestling and being “too good” for it or seeing it as “a sport...with costumes” is gone. It’s the childish enthusiasm a lot of people have when they first see wrestling—because they tend to be children—and if you’re looking for any sense of innocence in the Ruth character, there it is.
  • The music cues in this episode are pretty choice, as there is of course the perfect, completely ‘80s opening credits set to Scandal’s “The Warrior.” But Journey’s “Separate Ways (Worlds Apart)” for Sam’s GLOW vision is the cue that’s absolutely inspired.
  • However, I absolutely love the an early directorial choice in the form of the silhouettes of the women in aerobics class (during the locker room scene). Through glass bricks, of course. Glass bricks are one of the most ‘80s things no one ever talks about when it comes to the ‘80s, even though they’re definitely featured in some of my earliest childhood memories.
  • Shout out to professional wrestler John Hennigan (aka Johnny Mundo/John Morrison) as Salty “The Sack” Johnson, but also shout out to Chavo Guerrero (who served as the actual wrestling trainer for this show), as the gym where the ladies train is named after him. And of course, Kia Stevens (aka Awesome Kong/Kharma) is part of the G.L.O.W. Girls as Tamee.

Nach Baliye 8 semifinal: Shoaib Ibrahim and Dipika Kakar are eliminated from the show
Diljit Dosanjh was the special guest for the semi final episode of Nach Baliye 8.  He came to promote his superhero flick, Super Singh that released this week. The challenge was given by Sonakshi Sinha, who wanted dance that established the idea of connection. The first performance was a Spider act by Sanaya Irani and Mohit Sehgal and they aced it. Judge Terence Lewis was all praise for Mohit. They earned 28 points. They danced on the song, Tu Hai Lajawab from Kick and everyone was bowled over. Sanaya said that she felt they deserved to win as Mohit who was a total non-dancer put on a fab show. Later, we saw a paper dance where Diljit and Sonakshi shook a leg together.
It was Sanam Johar and Abigail Pande who put up the most artistically appealing dance of the evening. They showed off a rare technique called contact improvisation. They had a shared point of contact throughout and did some amazing lifts and acrobatics all through. Terence Lewis was totally gaga over their dance. They got a near perfect score. Diljit said this was a performance that was beyond marks and ranking. The concept was that of a nightmare and how it affects the psyche of a human being. Later, Sanam requested Diljit for a Bhangra performance on stage and all the boys grooved. He also revealed that his full name was Sanamjit Singh Johar.
We got a sneak peek of how Divyanka Tripathi and Vivek Dahiya prepared for the show. They played a blind couple who were sent to the gallows. The song was Chadariya from Badlapur. It was an emotional performance. Divyanka – Vivek were blindfolded in the dance. Mohit Suri said he loved it while Terence said he found the dance quotient a little low. They got 25 points. Commenting on the scores, Divyanka said we have worked hard and are confident of the results. She said we totally deserve the trophy as we have accepted many challenges and danced, which was not our forte. She expressed her disappointment at how people doubted their injuries. Divyanka also sang Lag Ja Gale on stage.
Shoaib Ibrahim and Dipika Kakar did a performance based on environmental conservation. It was the lowest score of the evening. Dipika got really emotional and Shoaib consoled her. Terence said he loved them as a couple as he connected with their simplicity. Sonam Bajwa, the heroine of Super Singh made a last minute entry. The first finalist was Sanam and Abigail and it was expected given how fabulous they all through. The second one to enter in was Mohit and Sanaya. The actress was in tears as she thanked fans. Divyanka confessed that she would be upset if she was eliminated in the semi-finals. Finally, the managed to get it with ShoaIka being evicted.
