Tubelight Movie Review: Salman Khan Is The Worst Thing About Tubelight
Tubelight Movie Review: Salman Khan and Matin Rey Tangu in a film still

Cast: Salman Khan, Sohail Khan, Zhu Zhu, Matin Rey Tangu, Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub, Om Puri
Director: Kabir Khan
Rating: 1 star (out of 5)

First things first, it's great to see Om Puri one last time. Puri was one of the very finest actors our country ever produced, and Kabir Khan's Tubelight marks his last filmed performance. Sure, he looks like he's walked straight off the logo for Kentucky Fried Chicken, and is given trite platitudes to mouth instead of actual dialogue, but it's still wonderful to watch him chew on watermelon and tell us how faith can move mountains. In fact, say I, we should all be grateful to Khan and Tubelight for illustrating to us just how true it is that dear Mr Puri is, indeed, now in a better place.

Tubelight Movie Review: Salman Khan Is The Worst Thing About Tubelight
Tubelight Movie Review: A still from the film

In Hindi movies, every Khan has his day. Kabir's came two years ago with the emotionally impactful and highly effective Bajrangi Bhaijaanwhich I enjoyed thoroughly. This time, it's Sohail Khan's turn, and he gets to outshine his celebrated brother simply by keeping a straight face. Tubelight is a Salman Khan film that kept me longing to have Sohail back on screen, and those are words I'd never thought I'd type.

As with war, any escape is valid, you see. Tubelight is a remake of a 2015 American release called Little Boy, a film which sounds obnoxiously manipulative to begin with, and - going by synopses - the Hindi rendition seems slavishly faithful. Well, as faithful as it can be considering it stars a man 40 years too old to play the lead.

Little Boy is about an eight year old child coming to grips with the futility of war, indulged by townsfolk to believe in his own magic. A child who lives on mollycoddling and affirmation? It's not hard to see why Kabir would cast this particular actor, though it is intensely problematic that the Salman Khan public relations initiative is plumbing such shameless depths. The message being sent out with this film is: poor little superstar who doesn't know better.

There might be something to that. Salman hasn't had to actually act for a while now, though he has been making more of an effort in Kabir's films. With this one, alas, he goes "full retard" as Robert Downey Jr dismissively scoffed in Tropic Thunder. While Khan could hardly be expected to pull off a Forrest Gump, what we get here is even worse than Koi Mil GayaTubelight is the story of a developmentally disabled man whose superpower is making constipated sounds.

Set in September 1962, the film is about Laxman Singh Bisht (Salman) whose brother Bharat (Sohail) has gone across the border to fight in the Indo-Chinese war. Here, period authenticity and detailing basically equals to everyone wearing sweater-vests. The film is set in a small, fictional hamlet, where Laxman is loved and laughed at in equal measure, until one day a travelling magician (who also appears to moonlight as a motivational speaker) uses him in a trick and shows him he can move a bottle with his mind.

This leads to Salman trying to move mountains and stop wars by sticking his arms out and grunting earnestly, over and over. These are supposed to be emotionally hardcore scenes depicting naive wholesomeness and a good heart. They come across unbearably farcical, crippled by what is possibly the worst performance of Salman's chequered career. Tubelight means well, an anti-war movie that illustrates the pointlessness of battle and the importance of not actively hating those you are at war with, and while its simplistic message is timely and admirable, the film is rendered unwatchable because of the leading man.

Kabir has always been good with war sequences, but while the ones in this film are mounted on an impressive scale and efficiently shot, the choreography is baffling. A row of soldiers stands in position, and when enemies open fire, they all fall to the ground, shot in the right shoulder at the exact same time.

Everyone besides Salman is good here, which is again a new thing to write about a star whose screen-presence and spontaneous charisma has carried him through many a horrid film. We get fine performances from bright Chinese actress Zhu Zhu and, most memorably, moon-faced child Matin Rey Tangu, who should have swiftly replaced the lead. These two play Indians of Chinese origin, facing hostility and prejudice during the Sino-Indian conflict, and it must be emphasised how unforgivable it is to cast a Chinese actress alongside a kid from Arunachal Pradesh here, as if to say it's all the same.

Alongside the Khan brothers who look to have been inflated with tyre-pumps, there is a strong cast, the norm at a time Indian casting directors have come good. We have the infallible Brijendra Kala smiling, possibly at the thought of his cheque, while Yashpal Sharma hams uncharacteristically hard, chewing on and repeating each line a couple of times as if to make it more palatable. Meanwhile, supporters of arthouse cinema may find it therapeutic to watch a strong thespian like Mohammad Zeeshan Ayyub wallop the megastar a few times.

Zeeshan, in fact, is particularly good as a knock-kneed meanie, but there's only that much he is allowed to do, as this film - and everyone in it - constantly makes way. It's the Salman Khan show, and here he is bobbing his head and widening his eyes, with all the expressiveness of a hurriedly drawn thumb-puppet.

Faith may indeed move mountains. It's a taller ask to make the mountain act.

Aamir Khan’s Dangal and Prabhas’ Baahubali 2 have changed the box office collection game forever! The humongous collections of these films have broken many records while make some new ones! Salman Khan’s Tubelight is one of the biggest releases to hit screens post this box office upheaval.

Naturally, all eyes are on how well the film, based on Indo-Sino 1962 war, fares at the box office. Tubelight numbers will be compared to that of Dangal (Rs 1983 cr worldwide; Rs 542.34 cr India) and Baahubali (Rs 1690 cr worldwide; Rs 510 cr India). However, this doesn’t bother Salman Khan, who plays the titular role in the Kabir Khan directorial. In an exclusive interview to India.com, Salman confessed that he doesn’t care about movie reviews or ratings and its effects of his film’s box office collection.

Salman Khan fans don’t judge their star’s film basis the reviews and that explains the huge box office collections that the Khan’s films garner each time. In fact, Salman’s earlier films have some box office records of their own and Tubelight will have to break these first to emerge a true winner. Truly, Salman Khan is his own competition! Check out 5 box office records by Salman’s earlier films that Tubelight will have to break when it hits screen on June 23.

Sultan (6 July, 2016): In its first weekend, which was also an extended Eid weekend in 2016, Sultan raked in around Rs 345 crore, making it the highest Bollywood grosser.

Bajrangi Bhaijaan (17 July, 2015) earned Rs 333 crore worldwide in its first week, beating Aamir Khan’s PK worldwide record of Rs 332 crore.

Ek Tha Tiger (15 August, 2012): Salman’s film raked in Rs 32 crore on the first day, becoming the highest opening collection in the history of Indian cinema and the biggest single-day collection ever.
The prequel to Tiger Zinda Hai also had a record first week collection, Rs 137 cr, and became the fastest ever film to enter the ‘100 Crore Club. This record was previously owned by Salman’s own film – Bodyguard (2011).

Dabangg 2 (21 December 2012) netted Rs 22 crore on its opening day, the biggest non-holiday opener beating the previous record held by Akshay Kumar’s Rowdy Rathore Rs 15 crore.
Salman’s Tubelight definitely has some tough competition ahead of it. Albeit, from films starring the superstar Khan himself! Stay tuned to India.com for Tubelight occupancy and box office figures.

Fidaa teaser: Varun Tej, Sai Pallavi starrer is a ‘love-hate-love story’. Watch video
Varun Tej and Premam fame Sai Pallavi will share screen space in the upcoming film Fidaa, directed by Sekhar Kammula and produced by Dil Raju. The film’s teaser, which came out today features the beautiful Sai Pallavi as the girl that Varun Tej falls in love with instantly. It is all about love at first sight, and the feel of wanting to live with this one person for the rest our life. Sai Pallavi’s first dialogue is ‘badmaash’, as she yells at a man from inside the train. This film also happens to be her debut in Telugu industry and from the looks of it, she might win the hearts of fans.

Varun posted the teaser on his official Twitter account and said, “Here is the link to #Fidaateaser http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NJxiKe3Gk7Y … Hope you guys like it!!” The shooting for this film commenced in the later part of last year, and the lead actor has been keeping her fans on the edge with updates of beautiful photographs from the sets of Fidaa. From shooting in Banswada to feeling blissful #Fidaa has been a part of many of her posts.
She was last seen in Kali, the Malayalam film opposite Dulquer Salmaan and is looking forward to working in the Tamil film Karu. In the meanwhile, Varun Tej recently started work on his upcoming film, which is to be directed by Atluri Venky. The leading lady of this film will be Raashika Khanna.
The lead actors just finished work on Fidaa about a week back, and he also tweeted about expecting to release the film very soon. While Sai Pallavi has a huge fan base for portraying the role of Malar in Premam, followed by her role in Kali, this film will decide her image as an actor in Telugu film industry.
Sekhar Kammula has taken a break after the film Anaamika. The director is now back with a feel good romantic entertainer Fidaa. The film stars Sai Pallavi and Varun Tej in the lead roles. While Varun Tej plays a NRI in the film, Sai Pallavi is seen as a Telangana girl. The film’s first look posters have been impressive already. Dil Raju is producing the film and he has revealed that teaser of the film will release today and as expected, the teaser arrived on time and it has got all the classy touch of Sekhar Kammula. Both the lead actors are looking special in the film.
Sai Pallavi, especially is the major attraction of the teaser. It feels good to see Sekhar back in form. The makers will release the audio soon and the release date will be announced in some time.

Ads by ZINC

Super Singh movie review: Diljit Dosanjh superhero is powered by jokes
Super Singh movie cast: Diljit Dosanjh, Sonam Bajwa, Pawan Malhotra

Super Singh movie director: Anurag Singh
Super Singh rating: 3 stars

Ever superhero has his special powers — one can fly, another is indestructible while the third one is all-powerful. Now take everything you have ever watched in DC and Marvel, give it a quick mixer-grinder treatment and pronto, we have Diljit Dosanjh in and as Super Singh. He can fly, he can kick balls (literally and figuratively) and he is out to save the world. But when you meet him in a dark theatre, all spandex and machismo, the superpower that actually keeps you seated for 170 minutes is his comic timings. Diljit’s hero sure knows how to tell a joke and he will keep you laughing through this film. Now that is quite a strategy, keep your CGI and special effects Hollywood, we will laugh you out of the competition.
Because let us face it, the special effects in this superhero caper are a joke. There is a moment when Super Singh emerges holding a luxury liner from the water and you laugh so much it hurts. The good part is that just like the audience, neither he nor the film take himself or his superpowers seriously in most of the film. He will thwart a burglary attempt with the same countenance as he will help an old woman with her shopping bags with 3 kg potato, two kg onions and 3 garlic pods. After his first attempt at being a superhero, he actually gets a bunch of bananas and $51 as shagun!
Super Singh Diljit Dosanjh
Diljit’s charm also keeps your attention away from the film’s wafer-thin plot and a villain — we won’t tell you who it is — who hams so much, he is his own meme. Every time you realise just how huge the craters are in the screenplay, Diljit tells a joke and all’s right with the film. That is till Diljit and his Super Singh realise that with great power comes great responsibility. From Canada where he is an amiable misfit wooing a white Cheerleader with jokes and bhangra, he lands in drug-addled Punjab where leaders — political or religious — are out to fleece and fool people. The film goes south from there.
The cliched climax which seems to have been lifted from a bad 80s actioner does not help the film either. By this time, you are tired of how the film has been thrusting moral lessons down your throat too. The message about religion feel forced and start getting preachy, especially towards the end. But the director, Anurag Singh, sure knows his target audience. Whether it is Punjab or NRI audience, they are going to love the first Punjabi superhero, comes as he does with Diljit Dosanjh’s innate charm and man-boy persona.
But next time Super Singh goes on his quests to save the world, and he will, given the promise of sequel is very much there in Super Singh, we strongly advise him to carry a hand sanitiser. Or find a planet with toilet on it.
Super Singh: Your friendly, neighbourhood (and affordable) superhero
Actor Diljit Dosanjh and film-maker Anurag Singh of ‘Super Singh’ talk about what it takes to make a low-budget Punjabi superhero movie
Super Singh: Your friendly, neighbourhood (and affordable) superhero
Super Singh isn’t the first Sikh superhero in the movies. A Flying Jatt, which had Tiger Shroff donning a suit made by an overbearing Punjabi mom (played by, who else but Amrita Singh) with her Usha sewing machine, gets that title. Released last year, A Flying Jatt showed, for the first time, an Indian superhero who didn’t take himself too seriously.
Is Super Singh then the first regional superhero movie? Tamil director S. Shankar’s Anniyan, although more vigilante than superhero, could qualify as a contender for this title.
But if Super Singh, which released on 16 June, can indisputably lay claim to something, it’s to being the cheapest superhero movie made in India. It had a budget of around Rs10 crore—the kind of money generally reserved for just the marketing of an average Hindi film (A Flying Jatt reportedly cost Rs45 crore). And yet, it took about two years to find a producer for Super Singh, says Diljit Dosanjh, who has starred in this film as well as Hindi films such as Udta Punjab and Phillauri.
We meet at the Juhu office of Balaji Motion Pictures, where a man wearing a Superman T-shirt serves tea and snacks.
“Three years back,” continues Dosanjh, “this wouldn’t have been possible. And even today, it wouldn’t have been possible had Balaji not agreed to produce it. None of the Punjabi producers said yes.”
Why? Because the lowest-budget superhero movie is also, quite possibly, the most expensive Punjabi film ever made. “Punjabi cinema doesn’t have that kind of budget, neither do we have that many screens or a wide audience,” says Dosanjh. The 33-year-old actor and the director, Anurag Singh, with whom he has worked thrice before, have delivered some of Punjabi cinema’s biggest blockbusters—Jatt & Juliet (2012) and Jatt & Juliet 2 (2013), made with a budget of Rs3 crore and Rs6 crore, respectively. They are considered to be among the recent Punjabi movies that have rejuvenated the local film industry.
Actor Diljit Dosanjh and film-maker Anurag Singh of ‘Super Singh’
“We are a small, nascent industry. I think it has got to do with the fact that the state has gone through troubled times politically,” Singh says later, over the phone. “Another reason is that the kind of films that were being made were the B-grade, action-movie types which sent the audience, especially the family audience, away. As a result, a lot of theatres started to shut down.”
It may be a stretch but one could argue that this may have had something to do with the fact that the mainstream Hindi film narrative has been skewed heavily towards Punjabi representation. And that it fulfilled the cinematic cravings of its local audience.
In the last few years, however, things have been looking up for the Punjabi film industry. The prospect of an emerging new film market would have attracted Balaji to produce Super Singh despite the fact that last year’s production, A Flying Jatt, wasn’t a commercial success. “There has been a late multiplex boom in the state. Places beyond big cities, such as Moga, Kotkapura, have multiplexes of their own,” says Singh.
It is not surprising then that the budget shaped the kind of superhero film Super Singh would become. “Had we had a bigger budget, we would’ve made another kind of superhero film. It would’ve probably been darker,” he says. Instead, Dosanjh and Singh decided to make a light-hearted movie.
It all started with a joke. “Some fans had superimposed my face on to a superhero costume. Somehow, the idea of a Sikh superhero seemed improbable and funny. I found it interesting,” says Dosanjh. For instance, you don’t feel the baffling absence of a super-villain in the promo of Super Singh because the gags, set to a bouncy, pop soundtrack, seem fun, original and localized. One scene has Dosanjh, all suited up, scratching his back with a stick before taking the plunge from the roof of a skyscraper in Montreal—it makes both cultural and business sense for modern Punjabi films to take their hero to Canada. In another scene, an aunt suggests he should think of branding himself better, like Batman, or Doraemon.
Actor Diljit Dosanjh and film-maker Anurag Singh of ‘Super Singh’
When asked about the superhero movies he likes, Dosanjh picks Deadpool (adding Hancock, as an afterthought), whose casual self-awareness—if not its morbid adult humour—seems to have rubbed off on to the family-friendly Super Singh. “It’s not that I don’t like the others, like The Dark Knight, but Deadpool made me realize that this is how it could be done as well. Why so serious?” says Dosanjh, who has seen quite a transformation himself—from a folk artist to the region’s biggest movie star.
However, the real test of a superhero movie is the action scenes involving special effects. In the scenes where Dosanjh is seen chasing a rocket or saving a ship from sinking, the special effects look solid. The movie, says Dosanjh, has used minimal VFX. “We couldn’t let our imagination run wild and had to strike a balance between what we wanted and what was possible. We worked with a small studio, Flying Flames, who were involved with us right from the start and gave their 200% to it,” says Singh. Dosanjh adds, “One thing we were careful about from the beginning is that we didn’t want the special effects to be laughed at.”
I bring up Baahubali 2: The Conclusion , the recent box-office behemoth that is supposed to have changed the game for regional cinema in India. Has the phenomenon of S.S. Rajamouli’s Telugu blockbuster, and last year’s Marathi film Sairat, opened up possibilities for a regional film beyond its linguistic border?
With about 700 screens worldwide, says Singh, Super Singh is billed as one of the widest Punjabi movie releases. Dosanjh and Singh are careful about comparisons—“Baahubali 2’s earnings are much more than the entire valuation of the Punjabi film industry,” says Singh—but agree that a regional film doesn’t have a limited life, as it used to.
“Today, our audience is watching everything on Netflix and the Internet,” says Dosanjh. “Even when we are making a Punjabi movie, we are always aware that we don’t know who is watching us.”

Toilet Ek Prem Katha, India vs South Africa match, Akshay Kumar, Toilet Ek Prem Katha trailer launch, Toilet Ek Prem Katha trailer launch details, Toilet Ek Prem Katha trailer Toilet: Ek Prem Katha has Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Swachh Bharat Abhiyan campaign at its core and has a satirical flavour within a love story.
Letting go of an official launch as lead star Akshay Kumar is holidaying abroad, the makers of Toilet: Ek Prem Katha will unveil the film’s trailer later in the day on a television sports channel, airing India v South Africa Champions Trophy match. The trailer will be shown during the mid-innings show on Star Sports India, so, fans can expect to catch the sneak peek into the film around 6 pm. It is also expected that at the same time, Akshay and the film’s team will launch the trailer on all social media accounts. Weeks ago, the National Award-winning actor showed the trailer to a section of media and if the word-of-mouth is to be believed, the trailer is the right balance of entertainment and the message, like all recent films of Akshay.
Also starring Bhumi Pednekar and directed by Shree Narayan Singh, Toilet: Ek Prem Katha has Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Swachh Bharat Abhiyan campaign at its core and has a satirical flavour within a love story. The film highlights the importance of sanitation conditions in India, with emphasis on the reduction of open defecation in public areas, especially in the rural areas of the country. Akshay and Bhumi are playing a newly-married couple.
Besides the critics, the trailer has also managed to impress censor board chief Pahlaj Nihalani, who went to the extent of saying that the movie should be made tax free. “Watched trailer of @akshaykumar’s #ToiletEkPremKatha. Based on true incidents, it promotes #SwachhBharat. Should be made #TaxFree. #SuperHit!” Nihalani tweeted a few days ago. Toilet: Ek Prem Katha will hit theatres on August 11. It joins the increasing list of patriotism-heavy films by Akshay. The actor seems to be living his golden time in Bollywood, with continuous box-office success and critical acclaim. The expectations from Toilet: Ek Prem Katha are hence higher.

The movie was earlier supposed to clash at the box office with superstar Shah Rukh Khan-starrer love story Jab Harry Met Sejal, but with the latter bringing forward the release date to August 4, both the films will now get a solo release and hence, an open window.
