Reliance Jio did not revise its tariff plans for nearly 11 months now, but the telco is still providing the best prepaid tariffs in the industry. Telcos such as BSNL, Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea came close to Jio in the benefits aspect, but never outsmarted Jio.

Vodafone India revised its postpaid offerings to stay ahead of Bharti Airtel and Reliance Jio. Following Vodafone, Airtel also revised its postpaid plans which are almost in-line with what Vodafone is providing.

Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has the habit of revising broadband plans for every three or six months. Following the same trend, the largest wired broadband service provider in the country has now revised its broadband plans across the country including Kerala circle.

Whenever we plan to travel abroad, perhaps one of the first questions that comes to our mind is: “How am I going to stay connected when I’m there?” And that’s not surprising at all. While it’s true that hotels and other places generally have free Wi-Fi in most countries around the world, you still need to be able to make (and take) calls.

Now, you can always get a local SIM (available at most international airports) whenever you land, but it’s always better to plan beforehand. So, the easiest option is to get an international roaming pack activated on your number. That way, you can continue to stay connected through your permanent number, even when you’re abroad.

Telecom operators in India offer quite a few international roaming packs, and these vary based on factors like duration of validity, and calling/data benefits. But which of them offers the best value for your money? To find out, read our comparison between the prepaid international roaming plans offered by three of India’s biggest private-sector telcos – Reliance Jio, Vodafone, and Airtel.

Reliance Jio

Reliance Jio’s international roaming plans start at Rs 575, offering unlimited incoming and outgoing calls (capped at 100 minutes local and to India), data, and 100 SMS, with a validity of 1 day. If your trip is a long one, you can go for the Rs 2,875 plan, which has a validity of seven days. Vodafone

Under the ‘iRoamFree’ brand, Vodafone offers many international roaming plans. While these vary a bit based on the country you’re visiting, the plans remain the same for popular destinations. In case you just need connectivity for a day, you can go for the Rs 695 plan. That will give you unlimited incoming calls, 120 outgoing minutes (local and to India), free outgoing SMS, and 1GB of data.

If you have a week-long vacation planned, you can get the Rs 3,495 plan with a validity of 7 days. If offers the same benefits as the 1-day pack, but data allowance is at a generous 7GB. Lastly, there’s the big plan with a validity of 28 days. Priced at Rs 6,995, it offers unlimited incoming calls, 120 free minutes daily for outgoing calls (local and to India), free outgoing SMS, and 15GB of mobile data.

Vodafone’s ‘iRoamFree’ packs are available in over 60 countries, including the United States, Germany, Finland, Sweden, France, Netherlands, Romania, Spain, Thailand, and the UK.

Airtel

In case you’re an Airtel prepaid subscriber, a 1-day international roaming plan will cost you Rs 649. In that price, you’ll get unlimited incoming calls, 100 free outgoing minutes (to India), 500MB of free data, and 100 text messages. Then there’s the Rs 2,999 pack, which comes with a validity of seven days and offers unlimited incoming calls, 3GB of data, 250 outgoing minutes (to India), and 100 text messages.

For a month-long holiday, go for the Rs 3,999 pack, which has a validity of 30 days. You get unlimited incoming calls, 5GB data, 500 outgoing minutes (to India), and 100 SMS.

Airtel’s international roaming packs cover majority of popular international destinations, such the United States, Malaysia, Thailand, Hong Kong, New Zealand, Russia, Spain, Switzerland, France, and Belgium.

Bharti Airtel, the former market leader, has shown interest in forging a partnership with Vodafone Idea in a joint venture for owning fibre network to focus on expansion. As per an ET Telecom report, Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea, both competitors are ready to bow down for forging a joint venture entity which would own the fibre network and would help drive bolstering growth and better influx for both the companies.

Vodafone Idea and Bharti Airtel Trying to Raise Funds

The business daily reported a top Airtel official saying, “We will be delighted to share and create one company. We have already built a lot of fibre with Vodafone Idea, and over the past two years, a lot of sharing has happened between the two companies.”

Notably, Indus Towers, the biggest tower company of India is jointly owned by Airtel and Vodafone Idea. Now due to the intense tariff war and the financially draining situations of the industry, both the companies have been resorting to different ways to raise funds to meet their capex and operational requirements. While Bharti Airtel has been selling its stake in the tower unit Bharti Infratel and making private placements of shares of its Africa business, Reliance Jio has set aside all of its fibre assets onto another separate entity and has plans to monetise it.

Airtel Plotting to Regain Top Position

Sunil Bharti Mittal led telco, Airtel, plans to regain its previous rank of top Revenue Market Share (RMS) holder by the end of the current fiscal year. Currently, Vodafone Idea has claimed the top spot with 32.8% RMS, with Bharti Airtel lagging behind at 30.9%. Reliance Jio, on the other hand, has 26.1% RMS as reported by ICICI Securities through the data collected by the industry watchdog, Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai).

Going by the analysts’ opinions, now the telcos will be able to hike the prices as the industry is headed towards stability owing to the consolidation. Also, since all the three telcos now own almost one-third RMS, the focus will soon be on increasing revenue by increasing prices. Another report by ET Telecom had denoted that Airtel is ready to shed off 60-70 million low-end subscribers in a bid to boost its ARPU.

This fact is definitely reinforced when we get to see the current trend in the telecom industry with operators introducing minimum recharge packs to weed out low paying customers and to increase their ARPU.

Vodafone India is striving hard to stay in the competition as it has now rolled out a new 100% cashback offer to its prepaid users. Having said that, Vodafone’s 100% cashback offer is pretty much similar to what Airtel is providing right now. For the unaware, Airtel offers 100% cashback on its Rs 399 recharge, but Vodafone’s offer is valid on three prepaid plans- Rs 399, Rs 458 and Rs 509, which provides benefits of 1.4GB daily data, unlimited voice calls and 100 SMS per day. According to the information we have, Vodafone has rolled out this offer in all the circles, but in some circles, the offer will not be valid on the plans mentioned above. That said, the cashback will be given in the form of Rs 50 vouchers.

Vodafone 100% Cashback Offer: Eligible Recharges and Other Details

Aforementioned, Vodafone is offering 100% cashback on three of its prepaid recharges- Rs 399, Rs 458 and Rs 509. All the three plans ship with 1.4GB daily data, 100 SMS per day and unlimited voice calling even on roaming for 70, 84 and 90 days respectively. The Rs 399 prepaid recharge provides a user eight Rs 50 vouchers, while the Rs 458 and Rs 509 delivers a user nine and ten vouchers respectively. These Rs 50 vouchers will be credited to user’s account and they can be accessed via My Vodafone app. In some Vodafone 4G circles, the cashback offer is also valid on Rs 199 prepaid plan as well.

As seen with other telcos, customers can avail a discount of Rs 50 on every prepaid recharge of Rs 399 or Rs 458 or Rs 509. Do make a note that a user can recharge only the Vodafone prepaid number which they used to get these cashback vouchers. And for a single transaction, only one voucher can be used. For example, if you’re recharging the Rs 399 plan, then you can use one Rs 50 voucher which brings down the price of the plan to Rs 349. But the benefits of the plan will remain the same.

Vodafone 100% Cashback Offer is Not Available in Some Circles

Vodafone also confirmed to us that this offer is not applicable in some circles, although only for some denominations. In Bihar & Jharkhand, users will not be able to get any cashback on the Rs 409 prepaid plan. Lastly, in Himachal Pradesh circle, the offer is available only on the Rs 458 plan as the other two recharges- Rs 399 and Rs 509 will not provide any cashback.

Prices of Vodafone Tariff Plans in Some Circles Differ

As you might be aware of, Vodafone is not offering 4G services in some circles including Bihar & Jharkhand, Jammu & Kashmir, Andhra Pradesh & Telangana and Madhya Pradesh & Chhattisgarh. And in these circles, the tariff prices differ. For example, the Rs 399 prepaid recharge is available at Rs 409 in these circles. Likewise, the Rs 458 prepaid plan is available at Rs 459, while Rs 509 plan is being provided at Rs 529 with other benefits.

So in these circles, the offer is applicable as per the tariff plans available.

Jio’s expansion and popularity in India is unstoppable, as, in the month of September, they were the only telecom firm to add new users. Both Airtel and Vodafone-Idea lost crores of users in the same month.

The presence and dominance of Jio have triggered unprecedented consolidations in the telecom space: Vodafone-Idea merger is no doubt the biggest among them all.

However, now Airtel and Vodafone-Idea may join forces to fight the mighty Jio, and this can change everything.

What will be this partnership all about? How will they take on Jio with this new arrangement? Keep reading to find out more!

Will Airtel Join Forces With Vodafone-Idea?

As per an unnamed top official from Airtel, they are now open to join forces with Vodafone-Idea and ensure more profits and revenues to defeat Jio by March end.

This alleged partnership will most probably happen in the telecom infrastructure space, rather than in the operations or services space.

In the past as well, Airtel and Vodafone had shared telecom infrastructure and towers, and this can be a new start to their old partnership.

This time, Jio will be the catalyst.

How Will This Work?

As per the information available, Airtel and Vodafone-Idea may float a new company which will be solely working on the optical fiber niche, which can also include towers and networks.

Once this company is floated, revenues can be generated as well, which will help both Airtel and Vodafone-Idea to fight Jio’s onslaught. 5G is about to hit India, and every telecom company and ISP will need services of an optical fiber network.

Immense opportunity for monetization.

The unnamed official said, “We will be delighted to share and create one company. We have already built a lot of fibre with Vodafone Idea and over the past two years, a lot of sharing has happened between the two companies.”

There has been no official comment from Airtel or Vodafone-Idea regarding this update.

Is This Partnership Even Needed?

Strategically speaking, both Airtel and Vodafone-Idea are gasping for air, as Jio is snatching away market share at an unprecedented pace.

As shared earlier, Jio was the only telco to add new users in September, while Airtel and Vodafone, Idea lost their existing customers.

In order to increase ARPU, Airtel and Vodafone are now forcing the users to recharge monthly, and this is causing even more harm to them, as more and more users are now ditching their services, and opting for Jio or BSNL.

Even Airtel had to slash their tariff for 28-day validity plans, due to these reasons.

Hence, if Airtel and Vodafone-Idea want to beat Jio in 2019, then they will need to do something dramatic, and out of the box.

And maybe this new partnership in optical fiber space holds the secret.

Vodafone Idea Limited has come up with a new offer for postpaid users after an eternity. As part of this new offers, Vodafone Idea customers can avail up to Rs 2,400 discount on every postpaid plan for 12 months or one year. Vodafone has this offer for a while now, but Idea Cellular has rolled it now to increase its postpaid user base. The newly merged telco has partnered with Citi Bank and providing 50% discount for users who apply for a new Citi Bank credit card. That being said, a user can avail a maximum discount of Rs 200 every month and an overall discount amount of Rs 2,400 spread across 12 months. For the unaware, Vodafone’s RED range of postpaid plans start at Rs 299, while Idea’s Nirvana postpaid plans start at Rs 399.

Vodafone RED Postpaid Plans: Netflix Subscription, 300GB Data and More

Vodafone India has the best postpaid plans in the industry right now. The telco’s postpaid plans start at Rs 299 and goes all the way up to Rs 2,999. With the entry-level postpaid plan of Rs 299, the telco is providing a total of 20GB data with carry forward feature, while the higher priced Rs 2,999 RED postpaid plan gives a user 300GB of data with 500GB of data carry forward option.

On top of that, Vodafone is offering one-year Amazon Prime subscription for free with the Rs 399 and above postpaid plans, and Netflix subscription with its postpaid plans priced above Rs 999.

Idea Nirvana Postpaid Plans: What Do They Offer?

Vodafone revised its RED range of postpaid plans back in April this year, while Idea Cellular revised them a couple of months ago. Idea’s Nirvana range of postpaid plans start at Rs 399, same as Vodafone and goes all the way up to Rs 2,999. The base plan of Rs 399 offers a user 40GB of data along with Data Carry Forward feature up to 200GB, and the Rs 2,999 plans ships with 300GB of data.

Unlike Vodafone, Idea Cellular is not giving any additional benefits such as Amazon Prime and Netflix subscription, but users will get free access to Idea’s Digital services such as Idea Music, Idea Movies & Live TV and others.

Vodafone Idea has been disappointing prepaid customers in recent times, but on the sidelines, the telco is bringing new tariff plans as well. Vodafone India has now come up with a new prepaid recharge of Rs 159 taking on Airtel and Jio’s Rs 149 prepaid plan. Same as Bharti Airtel, Vodafone is also providing 1GB data per day for a period of 28 days, which takes the overall data benefit for 28GB. Alongside the data benefit, Vodafone is also shipping 100 SMS per day and unlimited voice calling benefits for the entire validity period. Reliance Jio is also providing 1.5GB data per day for the same validity period of 28 days. Do make a note that this prepaid plan is valid only for select users.

Vodafone Rs 159 Prepaid Plan Benefits in Detail

As mentioned above, Vodafone has matched Bharti Airtel with the benefits of the Rs 159 plan. Vodafone is giving unlimited voice calling with a cap of 250 minutes per day and 1000 minutes per week. Furthermore, Vodafone is also capping the voice calls to 100 unique numbers during the entire validity period.

Coming to the data benefit, Vodafone is providing 1GB of data per day for 28 days, which makes it 28GB of data benefit for the entire validity. Lastly, users will also get 100 SMS per day benefit, but the SMS benefit varies with every circle. In some circles, Vodafone is offering 100 SMS per day, while in some circles, it’s giving 100 SMS for the plan validity period and in some circles, it’s not providing any SMS benefits at all.

The plan is valid for 28 days from the date of recharge and it’s valid to select users across all the Vodafone 4G circles.

Vodafone Rs 159 Prepaid Plan vs Jio’s Rs 149 Plan

As it’s clearly known, Vodafone has introduced this prepaid plan to take on Jio’s Rs 149 plan, which has been one of the best-prepaid plans under Rs 150 since the start of 2018. However, Vodafone fails to beat Jio as the Mukesh Ambani-owned telco is giving unlimited voice calls without any FUP limit, 100 SMS per day and 1GB of 4G data per day for 28 days. And more importantly, the plan is valid across all the 22 telecom circles in India.

Vodafone Rs 159 Prepaid Plan vs Airtel Rs 149 Plan

Like Vodafone, Airtel is offering the Rs 149 plan for select users in all the circles, again with slight variations in benefits. Airtel is giving 1GB of data per day along with unlimited voice calling without any FUP limit and 100 SMS per day for a period of 28 days, same as Vodafone. For some users, the same plan gives 1GB of 4G data for the entire validity period of 28 days and unlimited voice calls for 28 days.

Vodafone is Very Aggressive in Prepaid Segment These Days

Just a couple of days ago, Vodafone has unveiled its entire range of 1.5GB daily data plans starting at Rs 209. Vodafone now has three plans offering 1.5GB data per day, and they are Rs 209, Rs 479 and Rs 529. The Rs 209 plan offers benefits for 28 days, followed by the Rs 479 with 84 days validity and Rs 529 plan which is valid for 90 days. The telco also introduced a slew of other prepaid plans such as Rs 279, Rs 189 and Rs 109. In addition, Vodafone also came up with other recharges such as Rs 189 and Rs 279.

Reliance Jio has completely disrupted the Indian telecommunication industry since its debut around two years back while forcing the likes of Bharti Airtel and Vodafone India to bring down the data as well as tariff costs. This has also given birth to a new segment of prepaid recharge packs often called as combo plans, under which, users get multiple benefits such as data, SMS, unlimited calls and more.

That said, it is worth noting that there is also a long-term validity segment under which Reliance Jio, Airtel and Vodafone are offering around 84 days validity. While this is one of the most popular prepaid recharge segment in India, it usually comes with plans priced near the Rs. 300-mark. On the other hand, for users who are looking for a one-month validity period, the Rs. 200-mark suits them the best and here we take a look at the best prepaid recharge packs under Rs. 200 from Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel and Vodafone India.

Indian telcos have been fighting very hard to sustain in the competition since the introduction of Reliance Jio in India and while it has resulted in a major cut down in tariff as well as data prices in India. When it comes to the biggest competitors in the industry, people tend to debate on Airtel vs Vodafone vs Reliance Jio, as these are the top three players in the Indian telecommunications sector.

Here, we are going to compare the most popular prepaid recharge plans from Airtel, Vodafone India, and Reliance Jio under Rs. 300 since this has become the most popular as well as available prepaid recharge segment in India.

Reliance Jio Rs. 199 prepaid recharge plan

As expected, Reliance Jio is offering the most affordable plan in the segment with the Jio Rs. 199 prepaid recharge plan which is Rs. 50 less than the Airtel plan and comes with a validity period of 28 days, unlimited local, STD and roaming calls on any network, 100 SMS per day, free subscription to Jio’s suite of apps and 2GB of 4G data per day.

There’s a constant battle being fought in the Indian telecom sector. Private telecom operators like Airtel, Vodafone, Reliance Jio and Idea are striving hard to gain – and retain – customers by offering more 3G or 4G mobile data for lesser money. Initially, these operators started by offering 1GB of 3G/4G mobile data per day. Now, stiff price and data competition have forced operators to increase their daily data limits to 2GB for the same price. Airtel, Reliance Jio and Vodafone have now increased their daily data limits to 3GB. Also, Vodafone and Reliance Jio have unlimited data plans with 4GB per day limit or more. Here are the top eight unlimited prepaid plans from Reliance Jio, Airtel, Vodafone and Idea offering 3GB or more daily data limit:
Top 8 Unlimited 3GB or more daily data plans from Reliance Jio, Airtel, Vodafone, Idea

Right after Reliance Jio introducing a new yearly prepaid plan, state-run telecom service provider BSNL has launched a new annual plan of Rs 1,097, providing benefits for 365 days. Sadly, this plan from BSNL comes with just data and voice calling benefits, unlike Jio’s prepaid plan which gives data, voice calling and SMS benefits for the same period. In addition, BSNL has launched this new plan only in Kolkata circle and it will be valid until January 6, 2019. Having said that, the benefits of this new plan from BSNL doesn’t even come close to what Jio is offering with its new plan of Rs 1,699. But it’s an excellent plan for heavy voice-calling users.

Telecom operator Vodafone India has introduced a new prepaid plan of Rs 597 for both feature phone and smartphone users. The Rs 597 prepaid recharge offers benefits for 168 days for feature phone users and the same plan providers benefits for 112 days for smartphone users. Notably, Bharti Airtel also has a Rs 597 prepaid recharge solely for smartphone users, unlike Vodafone. With its new prepaid plan of Rs 597, Vodafone is giving a total of 10GB data benefit, unlimited voice calls with a cap and 100 text messages per day. So smartphone users can enjoy these benefits for 112 days, whereas these benefits are exceptional for feature phone users because it’s valid for 168 days. The data benefit offered by this plan can be enjoyed on 4G or 3G or 2G.

BSNL Rs 1,097 Prepaid Plan: Benefits and Details

Talking about the benefits offered by this plan, users will get a total of 25GB data which should be used during the entire plan validity of 365 days. The plan also comes bundled with unlimited voice calling benefit, but again, you can make voice calls to numbers located in Mumbai and Delhi circles. On the brighter side, BSNL is not capping voice calls to 250 minutes or 1000 minutes like Vodafone Idea. Also, there’s no after FUP speed provided by BSNL with this prepaid plan, which is underwhelming.

BSNL Rs 1,097 Prepaid Plan vs Jio Rs 1,699 Yearly Plan

Right now, the best yearly prepaid plan is provided by the Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance Jio itself. Jio, which recently amassed 250 million subscribers has introduced a prepaid plan of Rs 1,699, offering benefits for 365 days. Under the newly launched plan, Jio is giving its 1.5GB of 4G data per day, unlimited voice calls which can be used across all the 22 telecom circles and 100 SMS per day.

As you can see, BSNL’s newly introduced plan of Rs 1,097 falls short of Jio’s plan by a huge margin. Even the voice calling and data benefit offered by Jio are nowhere close to what Jio’s providing.

BSNL Rs 1,097 Prepaid Plan is Aimed at Heavy Voice Calling Users

In the last couple of years, telecom subscribers in the country have seen a considerable amount of data-centric plans launching by the telcos, but in recent times, private telcos such as Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea are coming up with voice-only plans aimed at feature phone users and basic smartphone users.

Vodafone Idea and Airtel came up with Active Recharges and Smart Recharge schemes under which they’re bundling talk time, data and rate cutter benefits with a validity of 28 days to 84 days. Alternatively, they also launched a plethora of combo prepaid plans with data, voice calling and SMS benefits for a longer duration.

For example, Vodafone India introduced a Rs 189 prepaid plan which is giving unlimited voice calling with a limit, 2GB of data for a period of 56 days. Before this plan’s arrival, we haven’t seen any prepaid plan with 56-day validity under Rs 200. Subsequently, Airtel introduced a Rs 289 prepaid recharge which is giving 4GB of data and unlimited voice calling for 84 days to select users across the country.

It will be interesting to see how BSNL reacts to these tariff plans from Airtel and Vodafone Idea.

Vodafone Launches a New Prepaid Plan With 168 Days Validity for Feature Phone Users

Vodafone Rs 597 Prepaid Plan Benefits

Talking about the benefits offered by the plan, users will get unlimited local, STD and roaming calls within India, 10GB of 4G/3G data and 100 SMS per day for 112 days. Sadly, Vodafone is limiting the voice calls at 250 minutes per day, 1000 minutes per week and the calls can only be made to 100 unique numbers during the entire validity period.

As mentioned above, the validity for smartphone users is 112 days, and for feature phone users, the same benefits can be availed for 168 days.

Vodafone Rs 597 vs Airtel Rs 597 Prepaid Plan

Airtel was the first operator to launch the Rs 597 prepaid plan. Airtel is offering this plan for prepaid users in some circles, and it offers unlimited voice calls without any FUP limit, 100 SMS per day and 10GB data for 168 days. While Vodafone is offering the same plan for 112 days for smartphone users, Airtel is providing the same for 168 days. It’s unknown whether Airtel has any special validity for feature phone users.

Vodafone Rs 597 Plan is Valid Across all 4G Circles

As seen with some other tariff plans launched recently by Vodafone, this new Rs 597 plan is also valid in the company’s 4G circles. For example, Vodafone introduced a Rs 159 prepaid plan offering benefits of 1GB data per day, unlimited voice calls and 100 SMS per day for 28 days is also being launched in only the company’s 4G circles.

Vodafone is Aiming at Voice-Calling Users With This Plan

First and foremost, this plan from Vodafone is aimed at voice-calling users. For instance, Vodafone did not launch a single prepaid plan under Rs 1,000 with validity over 100 days. But this Rs 597 plan offers benefits for 112 days for smartphone users and for feature phone users, it’s the best bet.

Vodafone Takes on Jio’s Rs 594 JioPhone First Recharge Plan

For the unaware, Reliance Jio recently started its JioPhone Monsoon Hungama offer, under which the telco is giving a JioPhone at just Rs 501 for users exchanging their old working feature phone. Also, at the time of availing the feature phone offer, Jio has set a mandate that customers should recharge with Rs 594 plan, which gives benefits for six months. Vodafone’s Rs 597 plan for feature phone users takes on the same recharge plan from Jio.

Vodafone Launches 1.5GB Daily Data Plans

In recent times, Vodafone has been aggressively launching new prepaid plans every now and then. The country’ second largest telco recently unveiled three plans of Rs 209, Rs 479 and Rs 529, offering 1.5GB daily data, unlimited voice calls with a cap and 100 SMS per day for 28 days, 84 days and 90 days respectively.

Reliance Jio has announced a new postpaid plan starting at Rs 199. The biggest highlight of the plan are international calls starting at 50 paise/minute. Wonder how the Jio's new postpaid plan compares to that of plans from Airtel, Vodafone and Idea? With new plans launching every other day, it’s hard to keep a track of what plans are available in the market and which one actually suit your needs. The war for market share among the telcos is getting more competitive day by day. Airtel reported its first loss in fifteen years, Idea continues to report a loss for the fourth quarter and other incumbents continue their run of losses. But, as the telecom companies continue to fight to gain customers, the latest data plans are offering more data at cheaper prices with every passing day. With so many plans available from multiple operators, it’s hard to choose a single plan from the lot, so here the top plans from all major telecom companies at a single place.
