Kamya Panjabi is always identified for her bold character and she always followed her own way to speak out in the public.
Punjabi doesn’t shy away in showing her thoughts whether it is the small or big screen. Now she has forwarded her support to the continuing #LipstickRebellion headed by well-known film director Ekta Kapoor as a major part of her forthcoming movie, Lipstick Under My Burkha.
Lipstick Under My Burkha is an Indian film made in Hindi. The film is directed by Alankrita Shrivastava and produced by Prakash Jha. The film stars Konkona Sen Sharma, Ratna Pathak, Aahana Kumra and Plabita Borthakur in lead roles along with Sushant Singh, Vikrant Massey, Shashank Arora, Vaibhav Tatwawaadi and Jagat Singh Solanki in supportive roles. The first trailer of film was released on 14 October 2016. The film premiered at the Tokyo and Mumbai Film Festivals, where it won the Spirit of Asia Prize and the Oxfam Award for Best Film on Gender Equality. In January 2017, the Central Board of Film Certification refused to certify the film, stating that "The story is lady oriented, their fantasy above life. There are contagious [sic] sexual scenes, abusive words, audio pornography and a bit sensitive touch about one particular section of society"
The hot actress also posted a few pics from the prize show and captioned, “A big thank you to each one of you who voted for men a very special thanks to very special someone Manveer Gurjar.”
Kamya also hit headlines for dedicating a small movie that accounts the life of late TV personality and her best pal Pratyusha Banerjee.
Divyanka Tripathi is on a vacation with her husband Vivek Dahiya to celebrate their first marriage anniversary (which is today) but the Ye Hai Mohabbatein actress' thoughts are with upcoming film Lipstick Under My Burkha, which is distributed by her show's producer Ekta Kapoor. Divyanka, who is in Italy, joined Ekta Kapoor's 'lipstick rebellion,' a promotional strategy for the Alankrita Shrivastava-directed film, which was initially snubbed by the Central Board or Film Certification or Censor Board for being 'too female-oriented.' Divyanka shared a picture from the Mamma Mia beach and wrote in caption: "(It's promotional...Do not get Emotional!) I'm an ocean, pretty on the surface. Abysmal, opulent and varied in the depths that many can't see. You can't ever know me completely 'cause I have a #LipstickUnderMyBurkha! (sic).
While discussing the movie she previously told media people, “It’s been produced by a common friend of mine and Pratyusha, Neeru Nikhat. She called me a few days ago and said that let’s do something about this movie, let’s release it online. And I was like Yes, we should.”
“Whatever we earn from this movie, I will be handing it all over to Pratyusha’s parents. So I thought of releasing the movie in a better way since the purpose of the movie is so good.”
“What’s there in the movie I would want everyone to see and then tell me about it. We couldn’t shoot the entire movie with Pratyusha. The climax part was left and before we could shoot for that, Pratyusha herself got her real life’s climax done. We had shot for it almost every night,” said Kamya.
The selection means Lipstick Under My Burkha is now eligible for the next Golden Globe Awards (to be held tentatively in Jan 2018).
The Golden Globes, the prestigious film and TV awards in America, is run by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.
“We are honoured that the Hollywood Foreign Press Association has chosen our opening night film, Lipstick Under My Burkha, to be an official Golden Globes qualifying screening. The director of the film will now have the opportunity to properly plan a Golden Globes campaign should she choose to submit the film for nomination,” Director of Indian Film Festival of Los Angeles Christina Marouda said in a press statement.
The makers approached the Film Certification Appellate Tribunal (FCAT), which directed the CBFC to certify the film with few cuts. After the film was cleared for release, Ekta’s team came up with an edgy poster of the film, which depicts a woman showing her middle finger. “I thought, will this be an ‘artie’ movie that 200 people will watch or a film where I’ll get more and more women to see it? So, we got a sassy promo out, edgy as hell with great Hindi ‘masala’ music and have more women pay attention to it. I felt this was the way to go forward.”
Christine added, “Our goal in working closely with Hollywood Foreign Press Association is to ensure that the Golden Globes are on the radar of filmmakers in India and that they become more and more aware of this platform and can begin to formulate their strategy.”An ecstatic Alankrita Shrivastava, director of Lipstick Under My Burkha said, “It is a real honour to have our film be chosen by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association as worthy enough to be eligible for the Golden Globes. I still cannot believe it. I am so glad that the prestigious HFPA thought our film has the potential to run for the Golden Globes.”
As someone who has produced shows on TV before venturing into cinema, Ekta understands the duality of the audiences in India. “Hamare khaane ke daant aur, dikhane ke daant aur hain’. What I say in front of my parents, I won’t repeat the same with my friends. And we are okay with it. “This is our society, this is how we’ve been brought up. But it doesn’t mean I don’t like discussing such topics. It means I will take up these issues in a different medium at the right time.”
Ekta said lipstick, as a symbol, had less to do with vanity and more to do with freedom of choice. “When you wear lipstick for vanity, it makes you look good. A lot of women say they wear lipstick when they want to feel good. I read somewhere ‘there is nothing that a right shade of lipstick can’t fix’. So many acts by us are a form of rebellion.”
“Lipstick Under My Burkha is a very universal film, it transcends cultures and countries. I am glad that the Hollywood Foreign Press association recognized that quality and made the IFFLA opening of Lipstick Under My Burkha an official screening of the HFPA, thus making our film eligible for the Golden Globes,” producer Prakash Jha said.
Spilling details about the first scene of the film, Ekta said one of the characters goes to a shop and steals a lipstick. “For me, that scene translates into a choice that she was not allowed to make. So she had to steal away that one thing.” Directed by Alankrita Shrivastava, “Lipstick…” has a stellar cast in Ratna Pathak Shah, Konkona Sensharma, Aahana Kumra, Plabita Borthakur, Sushant Singh and Vikrant Massey. The film releases on July 28.
