In 2018, Xiaomi has launched a few decent smartphones including Redmi Note 5 Pro and Redmi 5. While these devices offer much better value than any other devices at their respective price ranges, the company never managed to have enough stock of these devices. Now, the latest news suggests the company to soon launch a new Redmi smartphone in the new S-series. The device will be called as Redmi S2 and packs entry-level specifications. It will be the company’s most affordable smartphone with dual cameras. We hope the company gets ready with enough stock for the launch of its new device.
Talking about the specifications, the Redmi S2 comes with 18:9 display offering HD+ (1440 x 720 pixels) resolution. As of now, there is no information about the exact screen size. Under the hood, it comes powered by a couple of years old Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 octa-core processor. We have seen this same chipset in the Redmi Note 4 and Redmi Note 5 smartphones priced under Rs. 10,000. It might come in 2GB and 3GB RAM variants with at least a couple of storage options.
There will also be a MicroSD card slot for further expanding the storage on this device. Coming to the cameras, there is a dual camera setup on the rear featuring 12MP primary sensor from Sony or OmniVision and a 5MP secondary sensor from Samsung. For selfies, the Redmi S2 comes with a single 5MP sensor from Samsung. The cameras on this device will be supporting EIS & portrait mode. While there is no information about the fingerprint sensor, the device is said to support face unlock. With all these specifications, the smartphone will be backed by a 3,080mAh non-removable battery. However, we don’t think the company will be adding fast charging support. It will be running on Android 8.1 Oreo-based MIUI 9 out of the box.
Xiaomi will be mainly targetting India and China with its new affordable camera-centric smartphone. If the company goes for a very aggressive price tag, the Redmi S2 might come out with polycarbonate body instead of the metal body. Next week, the company will be launching the Mi 6X smartphone in China with 20MP front and rear cameras. Stay tuned on Phone Radar for more details about the upcoming Xiaomi smartphones.
