Wonder who are the most powerful people in the world from the technology industry? Forbes has released its annual ranking of The World’s Most Powerful People for the year 2018. As per Forbes, to rank these people, they considered hundreds of candidates and measured their power along four dimensions. They analyzed if the candidate has power over lots of people, the financial resources of the candidate, whether the candidate is powerful in multiple spheres and lastly, they checked if these candidates actively used their power. From the world of technology, there are 12 people who found their place on this list. Read on to find out their names:
1. Jeff Bezos : The first techie to appear on the list of 'Most Powerful People' is Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos. Even though he holds the 5th rank on this list, Bezos is also the first person to top $100 billion on the Forbes list of the World's Billionaires, overtaking Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates as the richest man on the planet. Bezos owns 16% of e-commerce giant Amazon and The Washington Post.
2. Bill Gates : The second-most powerful techie in world is Microsoft founder Bill Gates. Gates has sold or given away much of his stake in Microsoft and owns just over 1% shares. Still a board member of Microsoft, he holds the seventh rank on the list of Forbes' 'World's Most Powerful People.' Gates was also the world's richest man for a period of 18 years before being overtaken by Amazon founder Jeff Bezos.
3. Larry Page : With a global rank of 10, Larry Page the is the third-most powerful tech honcho in the world. Page co-founded Google back in 1998 and was the CEO of the search giant company till 2001. Currently, he is the CEO of the of Google's parent company, Alphabet Inc.
4. Mark Zuckerberg : Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg is the 13th most powerful person in the world. Zuckerberg started Facebook back in 2004 at Harvard when he was 19 years old. Both him and his wife Priscilla Chan, have pledged to give away 99% of their Facebook stake over their lifetimes. Recently, Zuckerberg faced a lot of flak when his social media platform was involved in the controversy of leaking the data of 80 million users with political consulting firm Cambridge Analytica.
5. Jack Ma : Co-founder and chairman of Alibaba Group, Jack Ma, ranks 21 on the list of most powerful people as per Forbes. Ma also has stake in Chinese entertainment industry firms Huayi Brothers and Beijing Enlight Media.
6. Tim Cook : At 24th position on the list of most-powerful people in the world is Apple CEO Tim Cook. Cook became the CEO of the company in 2011, when co-founder Steve Jobs resigned from the position and became the chairman of the board. Before that, Cook served as the company's Chief Operating Officer.
7. Ma Huateng : Chairman of the Chinese internet giant Tencent Holdings, Ma Huateng is the 27th-most powerful person in the world and seventh-most powerful tech executive. Among the most-popular products of the Tencent Group is instant messaging app WeChat that has over a billion users globally. The Group also has a 12% stake in Snapchat-parent Snap, according to a November 2017 filing; it also made a pre-IPO investment in Snap.
8. Mukesh Ambani : The only Indian on the list of most-powerful tech bigwigs in the world is Reliance Industries Ltd founder and chairman Mukesh Ambani. He ranks at the 32nd position on the Forbes’ list of Most Powerful People in the world. Though per se not a 'tech executive', he makes it to this list courtesy Reliance Jio, the newest entrant in the Indian telecom sphere, which has 160 million customers in the country.
9. Sergey Brin : The second Google co-founder, Sergey Brin, has also found his place on the list of world’s most-powerful people from the tech industry. Currently serving as the President of Google parent company Alphabet, Brin has a global rank of 35 on the Forbes’ List of most-powerful people in the world. Back in Google, he was the head of the secretive Google X division, which made the in-famous Google glasses.
10. Satya Nadella : Next up is the Indian origin Satya Nadella, who became the CEO of Microsoft in 2014. He has played a significant role in shifting the focus of the company from not-so-popular mobile strategy and to other segments, such as cloud computing and augmented reality. Under his reign, Microsoft successfully bought LinkedIn at $26.2 billion. Nadella has secured the 40th rank on the list of world's most powerful people in 2018.
11. Robin Li : Baidu CEO Robin Li has secured the 58th position on the list of world’s most powerful people for the year. Baidu is one of China's top search engine and one of the world's most popular websites.
12. Michael Dell : With the global rank 59, chairman and CEO of Dell Technologies Michael Dell is the 11th most-powerful person in the technology industry. Most of his fortune lies in his private investment firm MSD Capital, which has stakes in hotels and restaurants.
