Former Indian skipper Sourav Ganguly turned 45 on Saturday. On the joyous occasion wishes poured in for The ‘Prince of Kolkata’ from all parts of the country. Social media too buzzing with his birthday wishes. Ganguly has been one of the most successful captains for India and is known for his leadership qualities. The left-handed batsman made his first Test appearance for India in 1996 against England at Lord’s and scored a brilliant hundred in that match. From thereon there was no looking back.

While he stamped authority with his batting, Sourav also played a vital role in the resurgence of Indian cricket. Under him, India registered a berth in the final of Knockout tournament in 2000 and also went into the finals of the 2003 World Cup. Though they lost the final to New Zealand but his leadership skills impressed everybody.  In 2002 Ganguly led his side to a Champions Trophy win.  In 2003 edition of the ICC World Cup Ganguly and his side were runners-up. Meanwhile, here is a look at some of the wishes and what his colleagues and others have to say on his special day:

When he's not busy discussing the Supreme Court-mandated Justice RM Lodha Committee reforms with the general body of the Indian cricket board, he's part of a committee appointed by that general body studying the very reforms. When he's not busy attending the Indian Premier League (IPL) governing council meetings, he's busy running the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB). When he's not busy chairing the BCCI's technical committee, he's busy selecting the Indian national team's new coach. Say hello to the omnipresent Sourav Ganguly - the busiest man in Indian cricket today.

The list doesn't end. When he's not busy doing any of the above, Ganguly will be found doing commentary for a broadcaster or presenting expert views on television or attending the MCC World Cricket Committee meeting.

"I can also apply for the position of India's coach provided I'm not an administrator," Ganguly recently told the media, when asked to comment on former Team India director Ravi Shastri sending his application for the role.

Less is more certainly doesn't apply to this Indian cricket great who's taken to the administration of the game like the fish takes to water.

In another world, at a different hour, this kind of multi-tasking would've been seen as a matter of accomplishment in Indian cricket administration. But in the prevailing times, the moniker doesn't stick. "We understand that to be a major concern and roles need to be more definitive, largely because a pattern has to be set in the larger context. There's absolutely no disrespect towards Sourav, given his vast experience as a cricketer and a leader in the game. It's the syndrome that we're talking about," two individuals keenly involved with affairs of Indian cricket administration over the last few months told TOI.

Ganguly's former teammate Rahul Dravid is a case in point. In the middle of the hullabaloo over whether Dravid could've continued in the role of India's junior national coach while being a mentor to an IPL franchise, it was he who took the first step in sorting out the confusion. Dravid wrote a letter to the Committee of Administrators (CoA) seeking clarity on his role and, in turn, provided the solution.

Avery Bradley is coming off the best year of his career, and the Boston Celtics made a move Friday to maximize their return on his rising stock when they shipped him and a 2019 second-round pick to the Detroit Pistons for Marcus Morris.
Marcus Morris

The Pistons announced the move Friday. ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski was the first to report that Bradley was on the move, and Shams Charania of The Vertical initially reported the Celtics would receive Morris.

After bursting onto the scene and nabbing a second-team All-Defensive nod following the 2012-13 season, Bradley vaulted into a new strata throughout the 2015-16 campaign and secured a first-team All-Defensive honor.

While Bradley didn't make an All-Defensive team for the 2016-17 season, his offense took another step forward, as he averaged career highs with 16.3 points, 6.1 rebounds and 2.2 assists per game.

Despite his strong performance, ESPN's Wojnarowski and Ramona Shelburne reported recently that Bradley, Jae Crowder or Marcus Smart were in the running to get traded.

Boston needed to create salary-cap space after agreeing to a four-year, $128 million contract with Gordon Hayward.
Marcus David Morris is an American professional basketball player for the Boston Celtics of the National Basketball Association.
Born: 2 September 1989 (age 27), Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States
Height: 2.06 m
Current team: Boston Celtics (Power forward)
Salary: 5 million USD (2015)
NBA draft: 2011, Houston Rockets (Round: 1 / Pick: 14)
Siblings: Markieff Morris, David Morris, Donte Morris, Blake Morris
In swapping Bradley for Morris, the Celtics will save nearly $3.5 million next season, which should allow them to fit Hayward underneath the salary cap.

Morris also adds much-needed depth to the Boston frontcourt. He is coming off a season that saw him average 14.0 points, 4.6 rebounds and 2.0 assists per game.

Although Bradley's four-year, $32 million deal was viewed as a bit generous when he signed it in July 2014, he's outplayed that contract by miles—especially in the context of the recent salary-cap spike. At present, Bradley has one year remaining on his contract. He's owed $8.8 million for the 2017-18 season.

The Pistons are able to add years to Bradley's contract now if they wish, although Bobby Marks of ESPN noted they can only add two years and $19 million in the next six months.

While Bradley may never be a go-to scorer or a tactical focal point, he's a defensive ace who can provide supplementary scoring as a spot-up weapon from beyond the arc.

For a Pistons team that missed the playoffs last season, he should provide a spark alongside core players Reggie Jackson and Andre Drummond.

The Celtics downgrade in the short-term in the trade, but clearing the way for Hayward more than makes up for it.

Bradley is an elite perimeter with more than enough offensive skills. He’ll provide an immediate upgrade at shooting guard in Detroit – even over Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, who remains a restricted free agent.

The Pistons hard-capped themselves by signing combo guard Langston Galloway, drafted shooting guard Luke Kennard and now traded for Bradley (who also reduces Detroit’s room under the hard cap). It sure seems Caldwell-Pope’s days in Detroit are numbered.

Bradley’s $8,808,989 salary this season is far less than Caldwell-Pope could get, and that matters for the Pistons, who are up against the luxury tax. But Bradley is on an expiring contract and due for a massive raise next season.

There’s a ton of risk in jettisoning Caldwell-Pope, who’s just 24, for a 26-year-old Bradley who can leave in a year. Either the Pistons lose Bradley to unrestricted free agency or give him a huge contract that becomes problematic with all their other salary commitments.

But that’s next year’s problem. For now, Detroit is better and less likely to pay the luxury tax this season.

The Celtics are also better with Morris and Hayward, who factored into this deal.

Morris is another combo forward on a team with Hayward, Jae Crowder, Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum. But Morris is most equipped to play power forward, a position of need in Boston.

The Celtics are weaker on the perimeter, though Marcus Smart can handle some of Bradley’s defensive responsibilities. Maybe Terry Rozier is ready for a bigger role.

Boston avoids dealing with Bradley’s free agency. Al Horford and Hayward are already maxed out on multi-year deals, and Isaiah Thomas — maybe even up to the max himself — and Smart are headed for big raises next season. Bird Rights would have allowed the Celtics to keep everyone, but actually paying everyone might have been cost prohibitive to ownership.

Morris, due $10,375,000 over the next two years, is a bargain. Even if he’s not as good as Bradley, Morris allows Boston to sign Hayward and have an easier time affording Thomas next summer.

Manchester United have agreed a £75m fee with Everton to sign Romelu Lukaku, according to Sky sources.

Senior Everton sources have told Sky Sports News HQ that no deal has yet been agreed for the 24-year-old but it is understood United remain confident one is close and will be finalised.

Lukaku's future at Goodison Park has been in doubt since he rejected a lucrative new contract offer back in March and said during duty with the Belgium national team that he knew where his future would be.

Lukaku has also been a target for Chelsea this summer but United boss Jose Mourinho has also been keen to add a new high-profile striker to his squad after losing Zlatan Ibrahimovic to injury.

United had been in talks with Real Madrid over a possible deal for Alvaro Morata and saw a number of offers rejected.

But Sky Sports News HQ understands their interest in bringing Morata to Old Trafford has now come to an end.

Lukaku, who scored 25 Premier League goals last season, is expected to have a medical later this week with the hope that he can join United for their tour of the United States.

The team return to training on Saturday before flying off to Los Angeles on Sunday.

Sky sources also understand the Lukaku deal is not linked to one that could see Wayne Rooney head in the opposite direction, moving back to Goodison Park and re-joining a club he left back in 2004 as a teenager.

Negotiations are continuing between the clubs and Rooney's representatives over his potential return to Merseyside.

Manchester United have agreed a fee of around £75m with Everton for striker Romelu Lukaku, senior club sources have told the BBC.

The 24-year-old Belgium international scored 25 Premier League goals last season.

United, who have been chasing Lukaku for most of the summer, will not now be pursuing their interest in Real Madrid's Alvaro Morata.

Everton sources say no deal or agreement has been reached.

The move for Lukaku is not connected to talks aimed at taking United forward Wayne Rooney to Everton.

Jose Mourinho's side are hopeful of concluding a deal in time for Lukaku to join the squad before they depart for a pre-season tour to the United States on Sunday.

The striker was on a list of forward options Mourinho gave to executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward before the end of last season.

It had been thought Lukaku would return to his former club Chelsea, who he joined from Anderlecht in 2011.

The striker was sold to Everton for £28m by Mourinho during the Portuguese manager's second spell in charge of Chelsea in 2014.

Lukaku is a client of agent Mino Raiola, who also looks after Paul Pogba, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Henrikh Mkhitaryan - three players all signed by United last summer.

The Belgian turned down the most lucrative contract offer in Everton's history in March and later said: "I don't want to stay at the same level. I want to improve and I know where I want to do that."

Lukaku, a 24-year-old Belgian who has 118 career goals to his name, was linked with a move to Chelsea since the end of last season, before United reportedly stormed in with a £75 million bid.

News of the deal was reported earlier today, with a host of major media outlets suggesting a fee was agreed and that the transfer could be completed within days. Within minutes the deal was off again.

However, despite those claims, a source within the Old Trafford has this afternoon revealed that the entire affair is in fact all part of the most elaborate player unveiling in Premier League history.

According to the source, United are keen to maximise the announcement of such a high-profile player after witnessing the likes of Aston Villa, Swansea and Liverpool go to great lengths to do the same.

"There's no need for United fans to worry, this deal is very much on. We were going to just announce it but having seen other clubs go all out we felt we should do the same. Our social media manager suggested we make it like a movie, with ups and downs, explosions and romance, so we're doing just that," said the source. "We're the biggest club in the world, and our signings should reflect that."

He also revealed that while no exact end date has been marked for the grand reveal, the announcement will likely involve fireworks, dolphins and the moon.

"We definitely didn't get ahead of ourselves here. We are very much in control. To be honest, we might announce today, tomorrow or perhaps even next year at some point, but believe us: it is all part of our plan and will definitely be worth the wait."

The source went on to say that if Lukaku goes on to reject the club and join Chelsea, that too will be part of the plan, though not a part the club has actually discussed yet.

Whittlesea footballer Dale Saddington, a 300-game veteran and premiership player, was knocked out after being punched by Fahour during a scuffle in the third quarter in the match against West Preston on Saturday.
The Northern Football League on Wednesday night handed Fahour a lifetime ban, effective immediately.
After a marathon two-and-a-half hour tribunal hearing, an emotional Fahour told waiting media that he would also step down from his role in the AFL.
"On the basis of the seriousness of the charge and the tribunal's sanction, I will be standing down from my position at the AFL," Fahour said. "In this time, I will seek professional help for my behaviour."
Fahour received a 14-week ban, exceeding the threshold that triggers a lifetime ban from football.
Saddington gave evidence at the tribunal before leaving without comment.
NFL chief executive Peter McDougall said the league wanted to take a stand on violence.
"The Northern Football League does not condone any acts of violence on or off the field," he said.
"Fahour's career suspensions tally now totals 21 matches, therefore this now activates the AFL de-registration policy.
"This means Fahour will be deregistered and banned from playing and/or officiating."
Video footage of the incident shows Fahour approaching the scuffle at speed and appearing to floor an unsuspecting opponent with a right hook to the head.
Fahour, who is the brother of former Australia Post CEO Ahmed Fahour, was immediately red-carded for the incident, which shocked and outraged players and local onlookers.
Fahour said at a press conference at AFL House on Monday that he had apologised to Saddington and his family and was deeply ashamed of his actions.
Ali Fahour steps down from AFL role after he was rubbed out for 14 weeks
ALI Fahour’s coward punch has cost him both his football and professional careers.
The AFL diversity manager stood down from his job after receiving a lifetime playing ban.
Fahour was whacked with a 14-match suspension, after a two-hour plus tribunal hearing in Greensborough, for the sickening strike that concussed Whittlesea opponent Dale Saddington on Saturday.
It took Fahour five games over the 16-match threshold — and he was automatically deregistered and banned for life under AFL Victoria rules.
Thirty minutes after the Northern Football League tribunal delivered its verdict, an emotional Fahour said he would leave the AFL and seek help.
“On the basis of the seriousness of the charge and the tribunal sanction, I’ll be standing down from my position at the AFL,” Fahour said.
“In this time I’ll seek professional help for my behaviour.
“I’ve played this game for 29 years. It has given me everything (and) I have loved working for the AFL and running programs that have reached out to communities far and wide.
“AFL is the greatest game, and I’m forever grateful for the role it has played in my life.”
Fahour worked as the AFL’s diversity manager, joining the league in 2011.
AFL chief executive Gillon McLachlan will on Thursday break his silence.
Fahour arrived at Northern Football League headquarters at 5.10pm on Wednesday night for the 6pm hearing, which was closed to the media.
It is understood that Fahour argued he was acting in defence of West-Preston Lakeside teammate and ex-St Kilda forward Ahmed Saad.
The former Collingwood and Brisbane Lion said a Whittlesea player “threw a couple of punches to Saady while he was in the choker hold”.
Saddington was called to the hearing to give evidence but did not speak to the media.
Fahour’s 14-match ban for striking followed the three-match suspension he received for striking a Macleod player off the ball in Round 3.
Fahour also received four matches stemming from two separate charges in 2010 and in 2012 he received a severe reprimand for misconduct.
Fahour last week went against advice from his boss at the AFL, Andrew Dillon, and wrote a character reference letter for Richmond’s Bachar Houli for his tribunal case.
Houli on Wednesday returned the favour.
“Ali Fahour made a mistake, an error of judgment, and knows full well that these actions like mine are not acceptable,” Houli wrote in a Facebook post.
“Let me tell you something, Ali Fahour is a person of highest character, a person who has done so much for so many people and a person I would trust my life with.”
NFL chief executive Peter McDougall confirmed Fahour’s playing days were finished.
“Fahour’s career suspension tally now totals 21 matches, and therefore activates the deregistration policy,” McDougall said.
“This means Fahour will be deregistered and will be banned from playing or officiating.”
Ali Fahour: Police investigating former AFL diversity manager over hit at suburban match
Fahour was handed a 14-week suspension from the Northern Football League on Wednesday night for striking Whittlesea player Dale Saddington and knocking him unconscious.
The suspension meant Fahour, who plays for West Preston-Lakes, had accumulated more than 16 weeks worth of bans, meaning he was automatically deregistered and barred from playing or officiating for life.

He announced he was standing down from his role as the head of multicultural and Indigenous partnerships at the AFL.
Police have today confirmed they are investigating the incident.
"We can confirm Whittlesea Crime Investigation Unit is investigating an allegation of assault that occurred during a football match at Whittlesea on Saturday, July 1," Victoria Police said in a statement.
"A statement has been obtained from the victim, a 33-year-old Whittlesea man.
"As the investigation is ongoing it would be inappropriate to comment further at this time."
The AFL said it would comment on the case after the league's executive meeting today.
On Monday, Fahour said he was deeply ashamed of the incident and had apologised to Saddington.

Johanna Konta v Donna Vekic: How Brit went through into Wimbledon third round
Johanna Konta continued her revenge tour of SW19 by beating another familiar adversary in the Croatian Donna Vekic.

Just three weeks after losing to the 21-year-old in the final of the Nottingham Open, the British No1 emerged the victor from a three hour and 10 minute classic on Centre Court to reinforce her title credentials.

Heather Watson’s victory earlier in the day means two British women are through to the third round of Wimbledon for the first time since Anne Hobbs and Jo Durie in 1986.

At the net, Vekic sobbed as Konta consoled her, so draining was the thrilling match on both players. The draw had already pitted Konta against Hsieh Su-wei, who knocked her out of the French Open and she came through that in straight sets. It was less straightforward against Vekic, whose ranking of 58 belies an enormous talent. But Konta’s mental strength, as much as anything, saw her win 7-6 (4), 4-6, 10-8.

The pair, not friends but certainly friendly, shared a joke in the corridor of the All England Club as they prepared to be introduced to Centre Court. Konta is a familiar face to Vekic, who spent much of her teenage years being coached by Britain’s David Felgate and as a result spent countless hours a week at the National Tennis Centre just outside London. But when play began it was fierce, frenetic and a great advert for the often maligned women’s game.

The pair arrived on a sweltering Centre Court with very different career trajectories behind them. While top-level success came later in life to Konta, who won her first tour title in 2016, Vekic was a child prodigy. She reached her first tour final aged 16 and won her first WTA title a year later.

As sponsors and big name managers flocked to her side, form deserted her and a tough few years followed. But in recent months Vekic has found her way again and that second career WTA title in Nottingham appears to have given her an injection of confidence.

The first set was evidence of that soaring confidence as she traded blows with sixth seed Konta from the baseline and had two set points. But 26-year-old Konta gritted out that game to take it to a tie break which she won 7-4, with Vekic hitting a backhand long on the final point.

At the start of the second set, Konta had to fight off a swarm of flying ants. She was less effective repelling Vekic, who broke in the opening game and served nervelessly to even up proceedings.

There was a seven minute interval between the second and third sets as both players took comfort breaks with Vekic attempting to ward off the effects of 30 degree temperatures with an ice towel.

Both players served as if freezing water ran through their veins in the final set. As Vekic served to stay in the match at 7-6 and 15-15, Konta slipped, landing on her side. There were several nervy seconds as she gingerly got to her feet and held her wrist. But there seemed to be no ill effects.

It remained too close to call until the final moment with Konta twice getting to 0-30 on the Vekic serve. She saw one match point evaporate but on the second, the Croatian netted Konta’s return and dissolved into tears.

Wimbledon: Johanna Konta beats Donna Vekic in three-hour epic to make it into the third round for the first time

Johanna Konta won an exhausting epic first up on Centre Court today to reach the third round of Wimbledon for the first time in her career.

Konta and Croatian youngster Donna Vekic played for more than three hours in the draining sun. Konta took the first set, Vekic the second before the home favourite eventually edged over the line 10-8 in the third.

It was a thrilling back-and-forth match, in which each of the three sets could have gone the other way. It was an long slog in the lunch-time heat, through a swarm of flying ants. And it was surely the best match of the ladies’ singles here so far.

From the start of the first set, just after 1pm, the pace was relentless and it hardly let up until it ended just before 4.20pm.

The crucial break in the decisive set came in the 18th game, as Konta found extra energy from somewhere to take her away from Vekic. The Croat saved the first match point with an ace but at the second she could only find the net. Konta celebrated with glee and relief, and a real sense that she can go far.

It all could have gone very different had Konta not dug in to turn around the first set hours before. It was the lively Vekic who broke her first to go 5-3 up. Vekic was looking just too sharp and forced her way to two set points. Konta furiously saved them and broke back, to the roar of the Centre Court crowd.

Konta nearly edged ahead at 5-5 but missed four break points and the first set ended up in a tie break. At the end of a set of missed chances and swinging momentum, the tie break was much the same, but Konta pushed ahead and won it 7-4.

After 67 minutes of draining tennis, the second set was even more topsy-turvy. It began with three breaks in the first five games, and there was almost a fourth, but Vekic held. From there the Croatian started to pull away and when she had the chance to serve for the set, she just about held her nerve.

By this point Konta and Vekic were tiring and the third set could never have been as fast as the first two were. The match started to go predictably with serve and the upsets of the second set felt far away. There were barely any moments where a break felt likely, although one miscued Konta smash in the sixth game could have opened an opportunity up.

It was in the 13th game of the epic final set when we saw the first break point, which Vekic worked so hard for, but even then Konta dug in, found some power from somewhere and got through. Four games, another anxious moment, another Vekic break point, but Konta saved again to go 9-8 up. The next game was when the break finally came, sending Konta through.
