Every year, April 19 has been earmarked for World Liver Day. In the current scenario, where sedentary lifestyle and increased alcohol abuse has become dangerously common, liver health has regained focus. Close to 10 lakh people are diagnosed with liver cirrhosis annually in India, as per a report by the World Health Organisation. Liver diseases were earlier commonly caused due to Hepatitis B and C. New mobile app can reduce your stroke risk: Here's how
Scientists have developed a new mobile application that can detect atrial fibrillation that causes strokes. The mobile application can save lives all over the world as timely diagnosis of atrial fibrillation is crucial for effective stroke prevention. The researchers studied 300 patients with heart problems, half of whom had atrial fibrillation. They managed to identify the patients with atrial fibrillation from the other group with a smart phone.
The mobile application detected which patients had atrial fibrillation even with a 96 per cent accuracy. In other words, the application recognised automatically near all cases with atrial fibrillation and the number of false alarms was very low. "The results are also significant in that the group included different kinds of patients, some of whom had heart failure, coronary disease, and ventricular extrasystole at the same time," said Tero Koivisto from the University of Turku in Finland.
According to the study, published in the journal Circulation, the application has been under development for quite some time - it took seven years of careful research to achieve it. Detecting atrial fibrillation has been a worldwide medical challenge for years, but affordable solutions available for all have been lacking. "Most smart phones have an accelerometer.
As nearly everyone has a smart phone, we decided to develop a simple application that could be used in the detection. In the future, everyone who owns a smart phone can detect atrial fibrillation," said Koivisto. This is the first time that ordinary consumer electronics have achieved such reliable results that they can be actually beneficial for the patient's medical care, said Juhani Airaksinen from the University of Turku. The results are also remarkable in that intermittent atrial fibrillation is not always detected even at the doctor's office. "If everyone can measure with an ordinary smart phone whether they have atrial fibrillation, we have the possibility to direct patients straight to the doctor and further testing without any delay. Therefore, the potential for economic savings is significant," Airaksinen said.

Yoga may benefit people suffering from high blood pressure and sugar
Suffering from increased blood pressure and high blood sugar? One year of yoga training may help, a new study suggests. According to the researchers from the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, one year of yoga training decreased pro-inflammatory adipokines – signalling proteins released by fat tissue – and increased an anti-inflammatory adipokine in adults with metabolic syndrome and high-normal blood pressure. The findings support the beneficial role of yoga in managing metabolic syndrome by favourably modulating adipokines, the researchers mentioned.
Metabolic syndrome is a cluster of conditions – increased blood pressure, high blood sugar, excess body fat around the waist and abnormal cholesterol – that occur together, increasing your risk of heart disease, stroke and diabetes. “These findings help to reveal the response of adipokines to long-term yoga exercise, which underpins the importance of regular exercise to human health,” said senior author Parco Siu from the University of Hong Kong.
For the study, published in the Scandinavian Journal of Medicine and Science in Sports, researchers investigated the effect of yoga on people suffering from metabolic syndrome with high-normal blood pressure by exploring modulations in pro-inflammatory adipokines (leptin, chemerin, visfatin and plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 or PAI-1) and an anti-inflammatory adipokine (adiponectin).
Participants in the yoga group underwent a yoga training programme with three one-hour yoga sessions weekly for a year. The participants’ serum were harvested and assessed for adipokines. Generalised estimating equation (GEE) was used to examine the interaction effect between one-year time (pre vs post) and intervention (control vs yoga).
GEE analyses revealed significant interaction effects between one-year time and yoga intervention for the decreases in leptin and chemerin and the increase in adiponectin concentration in the serum examined. Yoga exercise might serve as an effective lifestyle intervention to reduce chronic inflammation and manage aspects of metabolic syndrome, the researchers noted.

Breastfeeding may reduce hypertension risk
It has been well documented that long-term breastfeeding is associated with reduced children's allergies, celiac disease, obesity and diabetes mellitus, the researchers said. Breastfeeding mothers, take note! New research suggests that women who breastfeed more children and for a longer duration were less likely to suffer from hypertension after they reach menopause.
According to the researchers, elevated blood pressure is the greatest single risk factor for disease and mortality. “Our findings endorsed the current recommendations for breastfeeding for the benefit of maternal health in later lives,” said the lead author of the study, Nam-Kyong Choi from Ewha Womans University in South Korea.
Evidence from epidemiologic data has also shown the beneficial effects of breastfeeding on the health of infants and their mothers. However, the effects of breastfeeding on maternal health have been little studied compared with the effects on the children.
Several studies have consistently found that absence of breastfeeding or premature discontinuation was associated with increased risks of diabetes mellitus, dyslipidemia, metabolic syndrome, coronary heart disease and cardiovascular diseases, the researchers mentioned.
For the study, published in the American Journal of Hypertension, researchers examined 3,119 non-smoking postmenopausal women aged 50 years or older in the 2010-2011 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. They found that breastfeeding of more children and for longer duration was associated with lower risk of hypertension in postmenopausal women.
In particular, the highest quintile of a number of children breastfed (five to 11) showed a 51 per cent lower risk of hypertension compared with the lowest quintile (zero to one). The highest quintile of the duration of breastfeeding (96 to 324 months) showed a 45 per cent lower risk of hypertension. The researchers, however, said that this link may prove to be less true in obese women.

Health tips to ensure healthy motherhood in body and mind
The baby has the healthiest chance at life if the mother has an optimum weight when she conceives and the weight gain in pregnancy is also optimum. Complete avoidance of alcohol, cigarette smoke — active or passive — recreational drugs, excess sugars and caffeine are also important. If a woman smokes, it is important that she quits smoking from a few months before she becomes pregnant. This will give the body time to rid itself of the toxins posed by nicotine and tar. A woman who wants to conceive should avoid being with smokers. It is important that people are asked to refrain from smoking in her presence, even before she actually conceives. Another important aspect of preparing for pregnancy is getting the body in shape. The baby has the healthiest chance at life if the mother has an optimum weight when she conceives and the weight gain in pregnancy is also optimum.
In addition, the cardiovascular health and muscle fitness will make the pregnancy and delivery easier for the woman. It is also easier to return to your pre-pregnancy weight after delivery if one has not gained too much in pregnancy. Energy levels will remain high and the woman’s body will be better equipped to handle pregnancy-related stress. This can make a radical difference to how the woman feels while pregnant. Remember, one can continue to exercise throughout pregnancy.

Newly found mechanism could pave way to end allergic reactions

The antibody interacts in a complex biochemical process in the human body by which it prevents the human allergy antibody (IgE) from attaching to cells, thus keeping all allergic symptoms from occurring.
“We can now describe the interaction of this antibody with its target and the conformational changes very accurately,” said Edzard Spillner, from the Aarhus University in the Denmark “This allows us to understand, how it interferes with the IgE and its specific receptors on the immune cells of the body, which are responsible for releasing histamine in an allergic reaction,” said Spillner.
Generally, an allergic person produces high levels of IgE molecules against external allergens when exposed to them. These molecules circulate in the blood and are loaded onto the effector cells of the immune system which triggers the production of histamine and thereby an immediate allergic reaction in the body.
The function of the antibody is that it interferes with binding of IgE to the two specific effector (CD23 and FceRI) on the immune cells, thereby making it impossible for the allergy molecule to bind.
In the study, published in the journal Nature Communications, the researchers observed that the antibody also removes the IgE molecules even after binding to its receptors.
“Once the IgE on immune cells can be eliminated, it doesn’t matter that the body produces millions of allergen- specific IgE molecules. When we can remove the trigger, the allergic reaction and symptoms will not occur,” said Spillner.
The antibody is particularly interesting because it is effective, and at the same time considerably smaller than therapeutic antibodies currently used to produce allergy medicine.
“It is a so called single domain antibody which easily produced in processes using only microorganisms. It is also extremely stable, and this provides new opportunities for how the antibody can be administered to patients,” said Spillner.

चेहरे पर टमाटर का रस लगाकर 15 से 20 मिनट तक छोड़ दें और फिर ठंडे पानी से धो लें।

नींबू का रस (Lemon or potato Juice
नींबू या आलू का रस चने के आटे में मिलाकर पेस्ट बना लें। 15-20 मिनट के लिए चेहरे पर लगाकर फिर धोएं। इसके नियमित इस्तेमाल से दाग धब्बे दूर होते हैं।
बादाम और दूध (Reduce blemishes with almonds and milk)
बादाम में मौजूद विटामिन-ई जहाँ त्वचा की देखभाल करता है वहीँ दूध में लैक्टिक एसिड होता है जो त्वचा से रेशे हटाता है।
अपने चेहरे और गर्दन पर बादाम का तेल लगाकर मालिश करें और 15 -20 मिनट बाद अतिरिक्त तेल को पोछ लें। ऐसा नियमित रूप से करने पर जल्द फायदा मिलेगा।

अन्य तरीके में 7– 8 बादाम पानी में 12 घंटे या उससे ज्यादा समय के लिए भिगोयें और फिर छिलके निकालकर उन्हें पीसकर उसमे थोड़ा सा दूध मिलाएं। इस पेस्ट को दाग- धब्बों पर लगाएं और पूरी रात के लिए छोड़ दें।
सुबह ठंडे पानी से धो डालें। 15 दिन में ही इसका असर दिखने लगेगा।

चेहरे से दाग धब्बे मिटाने के लिए सबसे सस्ता और अच्छा उपाय है आलू। अगर आपने आलू के स्लाइस बनायें हो तो चेहरे पर उन्हें 10 मिनट तक घिसें और यदि कसे हुए हों तो चेहरे पर लगाकर 10 मिनट के लिए छोड़ दें।
दिन में 2-3 बार ऐसा करने से इसका असर जल्द दिखाई देगा।

पुदीना (Mint leaves to reduce scars)
पुदीना मुंहासों पर अच्छी तरह से काम करके उन्हें सुखाकर त्वचा के रंध्रों को साफ़ करता है। 
पुदीना के पत्तों में पानी मिलाकर उन्हें पीस लें। यह पेस्ट धब्बों पर लगाएं और 15- 20 मिनट के लिए छोड़ दें फिर ठंडे पानी से धो डालें। ऐसा हफ्ते में 1 बार जरूर करें।

Exploding cream dispenser kills French fitness blogger
A well-known lifestyle blogger in France has been killed by an exploding whipped cream dispenser.
Rebecca Burger's death was announced on Facebook in what her family called a "domestic accident".
A warning against the faulty dispensers was posted to her Instagram account, saying it had "exploded and struck Rebecca's chest, causing her death".
French media reported she had died of cardiac arrest after the incident, despite medical attention.
The popular fitness and travel figure was well-known in France, with some 55,000 Facebook fans and 154,000 followers on Instagram.
One of Ms Burger's family members took to Instagram, warning readers not to use the dispenser, saying that tens of thousands of "defective devices" remain in circulation.
A whipped cream dispenser works by injecting gas into a metal container, keeping the entire dispenser under high pressure.
One French consumer group has warned readers for years about faulty connectors on the gas capsules, causing them to break and expel at high speed.
