LG unveils the G6+ with more storage and 'turbocharged' sound
LG has announced a new version of its G6 flagship smartphone that includes a larger storage capacity, improved audio capabilities and new software features. The updated phone brings iterative changes to the original and will be available worldwide.

The imaginatively named "G6+" was announced by LG today. The phone retains the same 5.7-inch QHD+ display, Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 processor, 4GB of RAM and 13MP dual rear-camera as the first G6. Internal changes have been limited to a significantly increased storage capacity (up to 128GB from 32GB or 64GB) and a new 32-bit Hi-Fi Quad DAC.

The DAC should deliver superior audio performance with subtler details and clearer bass. Since audio quality is always subjective, the presence of the DAC won’t necessarily be noticed by consumers. Audiophiles will be pleased by the addition though. LG will also be bundling a pair of B&O PLAY earphones in the box to fully utilise the capabilities of the DAC.

Beyond the minor changes to the phone's hardware, LG is introducing two new colours for the G6+. These are Optical Marine Blue and Optical Terra Gold. The "optical" portion of the name refers to the lenticular film surface. According to LG, this creates a "mesmeric optical effect" for a distinctive look and feel.

LG has developed a comprehensive set of software features to accompany the new phone. Layered on top of Android 7.0 Nougat, the company has updated its LG UX 6.0 Android skin to include new capabilities that expand on what's already possible with the G6.

A new "Face Print" biometric authentication technique will let you unlock the phone by holding it in front of your face. There's no need to press any buttons and the procedure takes "less than one second." LG claims the system is "more convenient" than rival facial recognition systems. It hasn't detailed how it works or provided images of the technology in action.

In the camera app, LG has added a Covered Lens warning that alerts you if your finger is encroaching on the frame. The company said that the wide-angle lens of the G6 has led some users to inadvertently include their hand in photos.

The phone will now display a warning if an obstruction is detected. LG hasn't said whether this can be disabled or if it will prevent the shutter from firing. In some instances, the covered lens warning could lead to you missing a shot entirely if it actively prevents you from taking photos.

LG said the new capabilities will help to differentiate the G6 against the crowd. The already popular device will now stand out more on store shelves, including double the storage capacity, a "turbocharged" DAC and an eye-catching revised visual finish.

"LG's G series has always been about offering innovation and technology that we believe will appeal to as many customers as possible," said Juno Cho, president of LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company. "By expanding the G6 lineup with differentiating features and colors, consumers will have even more options to consider when shopping for a new smartphone."

The LG G6+ will go on sale later this year in a range of regions worldwide where the G6 is currently sold. Pricing and exact availability hasn't yet been announced. LG's UX software update will also land in the coming months. It'll be preinstalled on the G6+ and available as an over-the-air update on existing G6 devices.

LG V30 To Launch At IFA Berlin 2017 In 3 Variants
The LG V30 will launch at Internationale Funkausstellung (IFA) Berlin in early September, industry sources said on Tuesday. The upcoming Android flagship made by LG Electronics is said to be offered in three variants shortly after its official unveiling at the latest iteration of the Berlin-based trade show that’s scheduled to start on September 1. Given industry’s standard practices, the South Korean original equipment manufacturer (OEM) will likely unveil the latest addition to its high-end V series at a pre-IFA press conference in late August before allowing hands-on time with the device at the event itself, provided that the latest report is accurate.

The actual release schedule of the LG V30 is still somewhat dubious, with other industry insiders claiming that the handset will already be on sale as early as August, thus directly contradicting today’s report from South Korea. Last year’s LG V20 was announced in September before hitting the market in October and while the Seoul-based phone maker already hinted that it’s looking to adjust its product launch strategy in the future, it remains to be seen whether it does so by a month or more. If the upcoming flagship goes on sale within a few weeks of its announcement, that would put its official release at some point in September and allow it to directly compete with the Samsung Galaxy Note 8 and Apple iPhone 8, whereas their predecessors were both available for purchase before the LG V20 last year. While LG Electronics isn’t expected to outperform either of the two largest smartphone vendors in the world, the company still has a realistic chance of growing its sales at the expense of those of Apple and Samsung, many industry analysts believe.

According to previous reports, the LG V30 might sport even slimmer bezels than the LG G6 and ship with an OLED display panel, Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 835 system-on-chip (SoC), and 6GB of RAM. The three variants of the handset will differ in terms of storage options, offering 32GB, 64GB, and 128GB of internal flash memory, industry sources said earlier this year, though the models may also have other distinctive characteristics. More details on the LG V30 that’s expected to start at around $700 will likely follow in the coming weeks.

LG finally makes a G6 that doesn’t skimp on features
LG has announced a new version of its current G6 flagship phone. The G6+ isn’t fundamentally much different to the regular G6, but it comes with 128GB of storage, new “optical marine blue” and “optical terra gold” colors, and the quad DAC only previously found in Asian variants of the phone. It’s also packaged with unspecified “premium” B&O Play earphones.

The quad DAC is a legitimate upgrade to the G6’s audio performance. I’ve been using a Korean model of the phone for a while and it really does sound great, even to these not-especially-audiophile ears. The question is whether the G6+ will represent the first time this capability expands beyond Korea.
