A few weeks ago we learned that Facebook would soon launch an option to remove messages from a conversation that were sent by mistake. A Messenger update revealed the user would have ten minutes to unsend a message, which will remove it from the conversation for both parties. The feature may already be in testing for some users, a new report reveals

Reddit user saras112 posted the following screenshot from an Android phone, which shows the option of deleting messages on Facebook Messenger for the sender or for everyone.

As it is right now, a user can remove messages from conversations, but deleting a message wouldn’t also remove it from the recipient’s app. You can delete any message sent to anyone, no matter when it happened, but that person will still see it in the chronology of the conversation.

What you can’t do right now is remove a message for everyone, whether we’re talking about chats between two people or groups.  Nowhere in the screenshot above is the word “unsend” used. There’s no time limit indication in the prompt above either. Again, the unsend feature will only work on the messages sent during a 10-minute window, per Facebook’s previous update. However, the user interface in the screenshot matches the unsend UI for iPhone, which was shown in a previous report:

San Francisco: After experimenting to bring changes to the user interface (UI) of Messenger, Facebook is finally testing a dark mode for the messaging app and platform in some countries.

Facebook Messenger has over one billion monthly active users and back in May 2018, at the company`s F8 developer convention, the Messenger team announced they were working on a redesign for the application (msnTarGet.com).

Jio offers 2GB daily data for 28 days, which is 56GB of data. In addition, the benefits also include unlimited voice calls and 100 SMS messages a day, and complimentary subscription to Jio apps.

For those who are looking at a lower value can also go for Jio's Rs. 149 prepaid plan which offers 1.4GB of daily data which is 42GB of data. Validity is for 28 days and the rest benefits remain the same as the Rs. 198 prepaid plan.

Vodafone Rs. 199 and Rs. 169 prepaid plan

Vodafone also has a similar Rs. 199 prepaid plan which offers identical benefits as Bharti Airtel's Rs. 199 prepaid plan. The difference here is the calls are not unlimited. Vodafone provides free calling for 250 minutes a day or 1000 minutes a week, post which calls will be charged at 1 paise per second till it resets at midnight. The company said that this decision was taken as it won't be developing features for these platforms in future. WhatsApp added that it wants to focus on mobile platforms that will used by majority users for next seven years.

"The decision was taken because we will no longer be actively developing for these platforms and some features might stop functioning at any time. When we look ahead to our next seven years, we are looking to focus our efforts on the mobile platforms that a vast majority of people use. These platforms/phones don't offer the kind of capabilities WhatsApp needs to expand its features in the future," WhatsApp said in a statement.

Last year, WhatsApp had ended support for Windows Phone 8.0, BlackBerry OS and BlackBerry 10 on December 31, 2017.

WhatsApp stickers

Possibly the biggest feature from WhatsApp this year, stickers were also one of the top searched things on Google.

While what it does is very simple, it’s very vibrant and dynamic in doing so. Other instant messaging platforms have had this feature for quite a while, but WhatsApp made it available only recently, in October.

You can find WhatsApp stickers in an icon right next to the emoji and GIF icons in the emoji menu. You are then greeted with three tabs—one with your recent stickers, second with your favourites and the third containing all the stickers. There’s also a “plus” icon in the corner that allows you to add more stickers to WhatsApp via a sticker store.

You can also make your own WhatsApp stickers by using the guide present on WhatsApp’s blog.

This might require some amount of experience with Adobe Photoshop and basic image editing. The stickers need to have a resolution of exactly 512x512 pixels and should have a file size of less than 100kb. We are sure once you get the hang of it, you’ll be making memes in no time.

WhatsApp data collection

Data privacy has become a major concern mainly after some major tech companies were shown to compromise user data without their consent. To address this and meet EU’s data privacy guidelines, WhatsApp started offering the users the ability to download all the data that the platform has collected on them. You can see the data gathered by WhatsApp by going to Settings > Account > Request Account Info. Then you will be redirected to a page where you have to click Request Report.

WhatsApp group calling

WhatsApp calling has been around for nearly two years now, but the instant messaging app only recently launched the WhatsApp video and voice group calling feature to its users. With the help of this feature, users can make conference calls with up to four participants. WhatsApp also recently introduced a button that lets users make conference calls with the tap of a button.

WhatsApp UPI payments

The most underrated feature of this year. The feature first made its way to beta in February and has been stuck there ever since. WhatsApp users with the final build can get a taste of it through invitations sent by people currently using the feature.

The feature uses United Payments Interface to make payments instantly, be it sending, receiving or even requesting money.

Since it hasn’t received an official approval from the Reserve Bank of India, WhatsApp has restricted this feature to beta and invitations. But I personally find it extremely convenient since having a payments interface on a chat app doesn’t require installing another app. The registration process is also very straightforward, even for first time users. And not to forget the massive reach WhatsApp has in India.

Picture-in-Picture

When you click on a video link sent by someone on WhatsApp, the system instantly triggers the corresponding app to open. With the PiP feature, you can watch the videos in a box hovering over the chat window, saving you multiple taps on the recents button. The feature works with third-party video apps like Facebook, Instagram, YouTube and Tumblr . You can confirm whether the media supports PiP (or not) by looking out for a blurred version of the thumbnail as well as the platform logo. If it’s present, it means the content supports PiP.

“Forwarded” label and forwarding restrictions

WhatsApp was in the government’s radar for several incidents related to fake news and misinformation this year. To address the issue, WhatsApp put up restrictions on message forwarding like removing the quick forward button which was present right next to media messages.

Further, it also added a “forwarded” label in front every message forwarded by you or other users. While it seems like a serious action, it is still to be seen how much of an impact these features have made to curb the spread of misinformation and fake news.

Group chats

The interface of WhatsApp groups received quite a few important updates, mainly centred around group administrators and creators. WhatsApp added group descriptions and the ability to remove admins from a group. Group creators can also restrict the admins they choose

Media visibility in library

Till June, photos, videos or audio messages received on WhatsApp showed up in the library. There were a few workarounds, but not everyone wants their image gallery to be filled with good morning messages.

WhatsApp fixed this behaviour by introducing a feature that lets users define which media shows up in their media library.

In one of its latest updates Facebook-owned messaging app, WhatsApp is again working on adding another feature for its iOS users. In a bid to make messages more secure, WhatsApp is planning to add another layer of security. A Touch ID support to the app would be added to lock the app on the users' phone in order to protect the users' private messages.

According to a report by Fun2Ind.CoM / MsnTarGet.CoM / MobAsk.CoM / Soas.in, WhatsApp is working on the feature and it is currently in high alpha stage. This means that the feature is still under development and is not yet ready for testing.

After the feature is rolled out for the users, a new option in the Privacy Settings-Touch ID would be seen. His feature will another level of protection to the users' chats. The feature will also show FaceID option if the users' smartphone supports FaceID.

The messaging app will ask the users to enter the iPhone passcode, just like the phone's lock system in case the Face ID or the Touch ID stops working. According to the report, no information about the users' fingerprint or passcode would be shared with WhatsApp. The feature sounds more like an iOS update.

As per the report, feature would supports iPhone models like- Phone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, iPhone 6S, iPhone 6, iPhone 6S, iPhone X, iPhone XR and iPhone XS.

The Picture-in-Picture feature on WhatsApp was only available for the iPhone users since the beginning of this year.

According to media reports, the Facebook-owned messaging app is rolling out PiP mode in phases for WhatsApp Web users globally with the latest version 0.3.1846. The users do not have to install the update manually, instead, the PiP mode would be automatically updated once the update is available.

This feature will make multitasking easier with your smartphone as well as with your desktop/ laptop. The WhatsApp PiP feature allows the users to message other users while watching YouTube videos and using other apps in the phone. Until now, a user could not message on WhatsApp and watch YouTube at the same time, but now PiP will help the users to operate multiple features on the single screen at the simultaneously.

How to get PiP feature for your desktop:

Update your WhatsApp web to version 0.3.1846.
Once the update is done, the users need to navigate to any chat where he/she have received any link of video.
The user will find a video card with a blurred thumbnail image along with the platform logo. They have to tap on that.
Once tapped, the video would be played on the top half of the WhatsApp chat window.
An option of watching the video in full-screen would also be available.

Notably, once the user exits the WhatsApp Web, the video will stop playing.

How PiP works on smartphones

The PiP feature which was only available for Android users in beta has now been rolled out to all Android users via the WhatsApp version 2.18.380. With the help of this feature, a user will be able to watch YouTube videos or scroll through Facebook and other apps in a small window that would appear in a corner of the phone's screen keeping the WhatsApp chat at the background. As per the convenience, the user will be able to adjust the placement of the small window on the screen.

To get this feature on smartphone, the Android users will have to update their WhatsApp to the latest version via Google Play store. Users will automatically enjoy the feature after updating the app.
