How to find out how 'safe/unsafe' your Android smartphone is

Here are some simple steps using which you can check the status of security patches received by the smartphone.
Step 1: Go to Google Play Store and download the app called SnoopSnitch. This is a free app and if your smartphone is running Android Oreo 8.1 then the test result will be limited.
Step 2: Once downloaded you can open the app and you will see this screen.
Step 3: Now you have to click on the option ‘Click here to test patch level.’
Step 4: Once done you will be taken to another window and tap on ‘Start test’ button. Now the test will start running. In order to run the test make sure that you have a working internet connection.
Step 5: After the completion of the test you will see the results on the screen. The results are categorised as Patched, Patch missing, After claimed patch level, Test inconclusive. We ran the test on OnePlus 5T and the Xiaomi Redmi 5. In our test results we found that the Redmi 5 has missed 5 claimed patches and the test result in inconclusive in 48 patches. On the other hand, in the OnePlus 5T the test result was inconclusive in the case of 5 patches but the handset has not missed any patch. Google is known for rolling out security updates from time to time for Android smartphones. The tech giant has also tried to push smartphones manufacturers to roll out timely security updates.
However, it seems that the OEMs are not taking this seriously. A German research firm, Security Research Labs have revealed that most of the smartphone makers fail to roll out security patches to their users and on many occasions they also skip it. The research firm reveals that many a times the smartphone maker informs the users that their device has the latest security patch but that is not the case often they are lying about it.
The research firm tested about 1200 smartphones from makers like Google, Samsung, HTC, TCL and tested their flagship devices. It was discovered that the smartphones tested have missed or lacked the security patch which the company claims that they have rolled out.
