Resetting Default Settings
It’s the most easy way to fix up your router. It’s unnecessary in most of the cases, but if you are too lazy to change the individual options back one by one, it’s better to go with a full reset. You need to long-press the Reset Button on the back, and this will reset the whole settings of the router. But keep in mind, you need to re-configure the router again, which includes setting up ‘Network Name’ and ‘Passphrase’ again.
Rebooting the Router
Rebooting often is the solution to several network problems. When websites fail to load or the network gets slow or if you see repeated connection drops, just reboot your your router. Several routers even need occasional reboots to work well. Not only switching off the power will do, you need to unplug the power cable and plug it back after a few seconds, and then switch it on, to fully reboot your router.
Check the Cables
Often accidentally cables get pulled off or become loose, causing loss of connection. You should check properly whether all the cables are properly connected.
Repositioning the Router
If your device is unable to catch the Wi-Fi signals, you better try to reposition your router. There may be blockage of signals, particularly due to huge metal objects or any other devices which is causing interference like microwaves or any other type of cordless device. Make sure the router’s antenna is positioned vertically, and not horizontally.
Changing the Wireless Channel
If your location has several wireless routers nearby, like a flat with several apartments or a society, there’s a chance that your router might be facing interference from the other wireless routers who are sending signals at the similar wireless frequency. Instead determine your optimal wireless channel, and change your router settings so that it can operate on that wireless channel instead of the congested one. Congestion leads to less speeds and there are higher chances of blockage.
Issue With Overheating
Routers are used for long hours, and often fall prey to overheating. The overheating even damages the router which make it unstable at times. You router should be at a cool and dry place and should get enough airflow. If the vents are blocked, it will cause instability and may damage the router totally.
Do a Ping Test
Ping Test is done to check whether your device can connect to the outside world. Mostly, a website ping test is done. Open a command prompt and then type Ping followed by the IP address of the website you want to ping. If you don’t know the IP address, type the whole address, like – Ping google.com. If the test is successful, you have some configuration problem on your computer. But if the ping test fails continuously, it indicates a problem with your router.
Update Your Firmware
Firmware is the embedded software, which comes pre-installed and allows the modem hardware to channelize the network and send signals. Most of the vendors has downloadable firmware on their official websites. Check if your firmware is current and updated, or else update the firmware. Go to the update tool in the System section of your router’s management console, and install the latest firmware. Do not download the firmware from any third-party site.
Clean up Your PC
Your PC might have spyware, viruses or malware. They get downloaded and installed, without your prior knowledge, while you are surfing on the net. These hassles with the net speed and overall system performance. Clean up your computer, or get an Antivirus which can detect and eradicate all these unwanted programs and prevent them from being downloaded again.
Time to Upgrade
In case you are using an old router, it may have got weaker with time and is not able to catch signals properly. Upgrade to a newer and more powerful router, especially the ones which can handle multiple client devices vying for bandwidth. The basic dual band routers only gives you two radio bands, and thus dedicate the band to other users which require heavier bandwidth, like streaming a video. Newer routers help to deliver a speedy throughput with an enhanced and better Wi-Fi coverage.
